  • The Transnational Experience of Victoria Falls Today
EPILOGUE REVISITING IMAGINATION: THE TrANSNATIONAL EXPErIENCE OF VICTOrIA FALLS TODAY Two of the most popular activities at Victoria Falls today are white-water rafting and bungee jumping. Both of these activities allow participants the unique experience of moving in and out of two different countries as their raft carries them closer to one bank or another and as the bungee cord swings from side to side in the middle of the bridge between the two countries’ border crossings. While many tourists revel in the knowl- edge that they are floating back and forth between two countries, they are unwittingly part of the larger history of transcolonial and transnational development and experience centered on Victoria Falls. This has been, and will continue to be a site of crossing; it belongs to no one defini- tively, yet is claimed by many. It is unsurprising that with its history in the early colonial period as a place of precolonial fluctuation and contested claims and as a marker of the end and the beginning of British expansion, © The Author(s) 2017 259 A.L. Arrington-Sirois, Victoria Falls and Colonial Imagination in British Southern Africa, DOI 10.1057/978-1-137-59693-2 260 EPiLOGUe Victoria Falls continues to be a fixed point in an ever-changing political, economic, and social landscape. The bungee cords swinging like a pendulum between Zambia and Zimbabwe serve as a reminder of the history of this site, when use of the Falls for cultural ceremonies and political sparring by local and not-so-local African populations and the colonial exploitation that followed kept this as an always contested and transforming feature of the landscape.

Briefing Memorandum: The Kazungula Bridge – Botswana-Zambia ICA Meeting: Financing Transport for Growth in Africa December 3-4, 2007 Briefing Memorandum: Kazungula Bridge – Botswana-Zambia TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. Summary 2. The Project 3. Economic Rationale 4. Feasibility Analysis 5. Project Contacts 6. Next Steps ICA Meeting: Financing Transport for Growth in Africa 2 Briefing Memorandum: Kazungula Bridge – Botswana-Zambia 1. Summary The Kazungula Bridge Project consists of the construction of a bridge across the Zambezi River between Botswana and Zambia, as well as the improvement of border facilities situated near the crossing. The main objective of the Kazungula Bridge is to replace the ferry service between the two countries, which suffers from slow traffic clearance as a result of limited carrying capacity. The bridge will form an important part of the trade infrastructure of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African continent. The construction of the Kazungula Bridge would enhance transport operations along the regional north-south corridor, which links the mineral-rich regions of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Botswana and the port of Durban in South Africa. In light of its importance, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) commissioned a study by Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultant. The study, published in March 2001, confirmed the technical and economic feasibility the project. The total cost for the Kazungula Bridge is estimated at US$ 70 million, with an additional US$ 30 million required for the border control facilities. Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultants have estimated that the construction would take 4 years, excluding engineering studies.

YOUR GUIDE TO VICTORIA FALLS Victoria Falls is the largest curtain of falling water in the world! Known as ‘the smoke that thunders’, it is simply a magnificent sight to behold. Because of its shared border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, travellers have a huge range of options to explore on a visit to this incredible destination. THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS Victoria Falls is situated at the crossroads of Zimbabwe and Zambia, spanning a width of nearly 2km along the mighty Zambezi River. The spray from its thundering columns of water is so big it can be seen from up to 50km away. As well as being one of the ‘Seven Natural Wonders of the World’, the falls were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the late 1980s. The locals have dubbed the waterfall ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, which translates to ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. ZIMBABWE AND ZAMBIA Whether you stay on the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls or the Zambian side, you will not be disappointed! Travellers can enjoy everything from scenic helicopter flights right through to sunset river cruises, wildlife game drives and various adrenaline-fueled activities. Both sides of the falls have excellent accommodation choices that we can recommend - see below for some of our favourites! WHICH SIDE IS THE BEST? WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT? Typically, the Zimbabwe side has the largest part of the falls The Falls can be visited (and seen) at any time of the year and panorama, cascading over 100m to the river below. However, enjoys an excellent climate year-round with a lot of blue skies.

With a length of more than a mile and a height of more than 354 feet, it is also considered to be the largest waterfall in the world. The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers, while the spray and mist from the falling water rises to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from 50 kilometers (30+ miles) away. No wonder the Falls earned the name Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” Located in northern Botswana, near the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park is home to some of the world’s largest herds of elephants and Cape buffalo, which converge along the Chobe Riverfront in the dry months. Lions, antelopes, and hippos inhabit the woods and lagoons around Linyanti Marsh. First set aside as a wildlife reserve in the 1930s, in 1968 this land became Botswana’s first national park. The floodable grasslands attract numerous bird species—440 to be exact, and the zebras that migrate through the park make it a top destination in Africa for wildlife viewing. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience and feel the power of one of the largest and most spectacular

Victoria Falls Zimbabwe & Zambia Victoria Falls at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia A natural spectacle that remained unseen by rest of the world until mid 19th century, the Victoria Falls go by the indigenous name – 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' – which literally means “Smoke that Thunders.” Feel the cool breeze off the waterfalls landing on your face and listen to the deafening sound of waters as the Zambezi River drops into the gorge below. It's not just a tourist destination but also an integral part of the region's economy, vital to ecology and local traditions. Victoria Falls History David Livingstone is considered the first European who stumbled upon the Victoria Falls in 1855 during the exploration of Zambezi River. The waterfall was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. Victoria Falls Activities Take the Flight of the Angels – The large landscape of Victoria Falls can only be entirely appreciated by taking a flight. The bird's-eye view of the Falls is simply surreal for travelers. These helicopter flights – peerless vantage points – take four rounds (two from each side) of the falls for almost 15 minutes. Jump Off the Bridge – If you're keen on Bungee jumping, then unforgettable memories shall be made mid-air when you surrender yourself to the oh-my-god depth of the gorge. Victoria Falls Bridge, standing 111 meters above the river, is the best place to do so. Swim on the Edge – The Devil's Pool is a natural rocky pool situated literally on the lips of the waterfall. Five trips, each lasting for maximum of two hours, are allowed in a day.
