RCA ANNUAL MEETING 2019 ELECTION

CANDIDATE STATEMENT: Peter McClelland

Dear Canada clubs and members,

After approximately a decade in rowing and retiring following the London Olympiad, I am happy to be involved with once again. It has been especially rewarding to have been the Athlete Director over the past two years, a role that I enjoyed immensely. I am now excited to put my name forward for a Director at Large position on the RCA Board of Directors.

I began my rowing career at Western University, served as President of the rowing club for 4 years and founded the team’s endowment fund. During the summers, I rowed for the Ottawa Rowing Club and competed at numerous Royal Canadian Henley Regattas. I then joined the Cambridge University Boat Club (England) and was a part of the winning light blue boat in the 2010 Boat Race. Once I had completed my studies overseas, I returned to Canada to join the national team and was lucky enough to win medals at the World Rowing Championships, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Rowing Championships before retiring in 2012.

I now reside in Toronto and act as the President of the Mustang Old Oars Club (the Western Rowing alumni club) and as a Director of the UWO Boat Club. Although I don’t get out on the water as much as I would like these days, I am a member of the Hanlan Boat Club and still enjoy rowing my single as well as joining both Western and Cambridge alumni crews at the Head of the Trent and the Head of the Charles, respectively.

Upon retiring from rowing, I took up finance as my profession. I began as an investment banker with Scotiabank and now spend my time as a private equity investor with OMERS, the $97 billion municipal workers’ pension fund. I have been lucky to gain significant experience in both industries, including serving as an observer and key contributor on four boards of directors in my time with OMERS.

I am keen to leverage the skills gained in my professional career to help further the RCA mission. My experience in finance and fundraising, my involvement with numerous businesses, and specifically my extensive board experience (including on the RCA Board of Directors for the past two years) combined with my years as a national team athlete, all put me in good stead to be an asset for RCA. I look forward to continuing to give back to a sport that has given me so much.

Sincerely,

Peter McClelland
