The final day of a historic election with record turnout took place on November 3, 2020. While votes are still being counted in the election for US President, South Carolina’s outlook began taking shape shortly after the polls closed. There were significant increases in early voting as compared to 2016, with both Republicans and Democrats showing up early and pushing South Carolina’s voter turnout to 72.10%. While President Trump won the 9 electoral votes from the State of South Carolina, President-elect won the national election.

November 3, 2020: Election day & States appointed their electors States must appoint their electors to the electoral college on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November under a federal law passed by Congress in 1845.

December 8, 2020: The safe harbor deadline in the electoral college Six days before the electoral colleges convene to vote is the "safe harbor" deadline. While states aren't legally required to certify their results by this date, if they do so, they can avoid Congress getting involved and resolving a potential dispute over which candidate won a particular state's electoral college votes.

December 14, 2020: Electors vote On the second Monday after the second Wednesday in December, slates of electors selected by voters convene in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to formally cast their votes for president and vice president.

January 6, 2021 at 1 p.m.: Vote count is finalized and the results are certified The sitting Vice President, acting as the Senate president, presides over a joint session of Congress to read aloud the certificates cast by the electors representing all 50 states and D.C. in alphabetical order to finalize the vote count.

January 20, 2021 at noon: The president is inaugurated The president and vice president are formally inaugurated and sworn into office. The president is sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the vice president can be sworn in by another government official of their choosing. Federal Election Results US Senate

Lindsey Graham Jaime Harrison

Senator won a 4th term in the on November 3rd. However, nationally, the control of the Senate remains to be undetermined due to 2 runoff elections in Georgia that will be held January 5th, 2021.

Senator was not up for election in 2020. His seat will be up for re-election in 2022.

Current US Senate Composition (before Georgia runoffs): Republicans: 50 Democrats: 46 Independents: 2 (both caucus with Democrats)

Nancy Mace Joe Cunningham

Freshman Congressman Joe Cunningham was defeated for reelection by first term State Representative .

Mace will be sworn in on January 3rd, 2021 as the first woman to be elected to Congress since 1990. District 2

Joe Wilson Adair Ford Boroughs

Congressman Joe Wilson won a 10th term in Congress by defeating Adair Ford Boroughs.

Jeff Duncan Hosea Cleveland

Congressman was elected to a 5th term in the US House of Representatives.

Duncan serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

William Timmons Kim Nelson

Freshman Congressman won a 2nd term in Congress.

Ralph Norman Moe Brown

Congressman was reelected to a 2nd full term on November 3rd after being elected in 2017.

Norman's committee assignments include: Oversight and Reform, Science, Space, & Technology, and Budget. District 6

John McCollum James E. Clyburn

Congressman Clyburn was elected to his 15th term in Congress.

Tom Rice Melissa Watson

Congressman was just elected to his 5th term in the US House of Representatives.

Rice serves on the Ways and Means Committee.

Democrats have retained control of the United States House of Representatives. However, their majority was reduced by Republican gains across the country. There still remains races uncalled due to recounts, mail-in ballots, and other issues.

Currently (November 2020), there has been a net gain of 6 seats for Republicans. State Election Results

A historic election with record turnout took place on November 3, 2020. Republicans, however, solidified control of the General Assembly with pickups in both Chambers. The voter turnout for this election cycle was over 72%.

Elections were held in all 170 legislative Districts. State Senators serve 4-year terms, and Representatives serve 2- year terms.

Governor & Lt. Governor Henry McMaster and were not up for reelection. All Constitutional Offices will be up for election in 2022. Secretary of State Mark Hammond was not up for reelection.
