UNPAID PROCEDURE As of JULY 1, 2017

The San Marino Unified School District Food Service will not refuse or offer an alternate meal to any students with a negative account balance. Cashiers will no longer remind students that their account is low or negative. Students however may request this information from the cashier. Students with a negative lunch balance are not offered an alternate or lower . They are allowed to charge a reimbursable meal of their choice until the account is replenished. However students owing more than $10.00 will not be allowed to make a la carte purchases at or lunch service times. Households with a negative lunch account will receive an automated courtesy phone call and email reminder each Wednesday until the account is replenished. If the account is not replenished in a timely manner and or the balance is negative $50.00 and more, the household will be contacted by the Food Service Director to discuss one of the following options:

Payment Options Offered to Household with Unpaid Account Balance: Online Payment – The My School Bucks online payment system (www.myschoolbucks.com) allows parents to make prepayments, set up low balance reminders, set up automatic deductions from a bank account or credit card, and view student transactions. Check Payment – Checks maybe mailed, delivered to the school office or classroom, delivered to the school , or to the Food Service office. Students may also make a check payment at the cafeteria serving line. Checks are to be made payable to Student’s Cafeteria for example “Carver Cafeteria”

In the memo section of the check indicate the student’s name which must be written exactly as the student is enrolled with the District.

Cash Payment - Cash payments are only accepted in the or in the Food Service Office. A Receipt will be issued for cash payments made at the District or School offices. Other Payment – A written promise for payment in full by an agreed date or monthly payments until the outstanding balance is settled. If eligible status is applied under the National School Lunch Program the student will immediately be able to have daily regardless of the balance in the lunch account. However, unpaid balance must still be settled with the District using any of the payment options above. If an application was submitted, the student’s new eligibility status will be effective on the date the application is received by the Food Service Department. San Marino Unified School District, in agreement with households, allows positive lunch balances to graduate with students through to the 12 grade or to date that the student leaves the District. Students that qualify for at the free or reduced-priced rate and have an unpaid balance of $10.00 or more will be able to have a reimbursable/combination lunch but not to purchase a la carte items.

A reimbursable/combination meal is a lunch plate containing all the required components as set by the National School Program guidelines and the items selected to be of the student’s choice. 12th grade students in with paid status having a negative balance of $50.00 or more is not allowed to charge for either snack, lunch, or a la carte items. 12th grade students with free and reduced - priced eligibility is allowed to have a reimbursable meal regardless of the negative amount of the lunch account but is not allowed to charge a la carte items. If all Food Services attempts at collection has failed then the School principal or designee will be asked to help with the collection of the outstanding balances. Unpaid balances remain active for a year and if not settled will be turned over to District’s General Fund for payment. Graduating and non-returning students with positive balances can either transfer the balance to a sibling that will be attending any school within the District or request a check refund, or donate to the Food Service lunch account balance. Households have up to one year to request refunds. Please see refund policy below. How Do I request a refund from the School?

Send a written request to [email protected] or via US mail at 1665 West Drive, San Marino, CA 91108. Include the enrolled name of the student/s, the payee’s full name, and the address where to send the refund check. A $5.00 convenience fee will be deducted from the remaining balance.
