My ramp strike did not count as a DL! At this time of the year the westerlies (winds) are howling and it is freezing at Nowra. Not a good time for a swim. By 1 September I had 38 day DLs and 22 cats by day — the minimum experience (later changed to a larger requirement) to go out by night. As I say the first hook up Touch & Go was good enough; so I guess the second (also hook up) was fortunate in that had the hook been down — I may not have been here to tell you all this. The hook would have tried to rip off some deck plates and then it would have been goodnight. It is probably obvious that lots of good things occurred to help me survive that night — apart from being silly enough to hit the ramp in the first place.     ABSTRACT SOCIAL AND SPATIAL MOBILITY IN THE BRITISH EMPIRE: READING AND MAPPING LOWER CLASS TRAVEL ACCOUNTS OF THE 1790’s by Courtney Misich Through textual analysis and mapping of 1790s published travel accounts, this project examines how lower class individuals utilized the growing British Empire to expand their societal status and travel opportunities. Modeled on early novels of the mid-eighteenth century such as Robinson Crusoe and Pamela, these supposedly “true” travel accounts showed their protagonists using personal connections, patronage, and employment to overcome adversity and rise socially. Individuals demonstrated mobility through their public image, dress, and speech. Passing for middle class was difficult, although often achievable through education, conduct, and finances. A publicly available interactive map in ArcGIS Online was created. It shows the routes of travel, characteristics of the travelers’ social status, and quotations from the primary sources, allowing them to be compared. The interactive map was built from the travel accounts descriptions of their travels, social status, financial status, and employment through manual data entry. The map is designed to be accessible and appealing to a broad public, enlarging the audience beyond specialists in digital humanities. The present study is an ethnographic investigation into the effects of participation in AA with a particular emphasis upon self-concept that seeks to move beyond description into one of explanation concerning the processes by which changes may be elicited. The study sample consists of three intervention programmes for disadvantaged and at-risk populations. The first is a Pathways to Employment project for disadvantaged youth (n = 10); the second, a Youth Offending Team programme for at-risk youth (n = 9); and the third, a JobMatch programme for unemployed adults (n = 33). Findings indicate that the AA programmes made an important and meaningful contribution towards the positive development of self-concept and may also facilitate positive behaviour change among participants. A number of affective and cognitive components emerged strongly from the data that show improvements to self-esteem, mood and self- confidence (self-efficacy). These in turn appear to effect behavioural changes exhibited and reported by participants. Participants describe improvements in attitudes and behaviour expressed as being more ready to overcome anxiety in fearful situations, take on new challenges, act in a more agentic and self-determined manner and be more trusting of others.

Scotch-Irish and German Settlers in Virginia and the Carolinas Introduction During the 1700s many Scotch-Irish and German immigrants arrived in America. They and their children settled parts of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Today, most of their descendants never think about their heritage. Most live in the present, are working on real-life problems, or planning their future. That attitude was shared by their ancestor immigrants 250 years ago. Nonetheless, I suspect most descendants have at least wondered what the word Scotch-Irish means. All my life, I have heard various facts, but never understood how they fit together. Some facts appeared contradictory. So, I investigated, and discovered a colorful story that far exceeded my expectations. My principal objectives were to: Understand certain comments made by grandparents and other relatives over 40 years ago. Understand the confusing adjective Scotch-Irish. Understand the confusing cultural icons of bagpipes, kilts, Celtic whistles, etc. Understand the history of Moravian, Lutheran, Mennonite, Amish, Dunkards, Presbyterian, Puritanism, Huguenot, Quaker, Methodist, Congregational, and Baptist denominations that have churches in the Carolinas. Understand why and when surnames became common. Understand ancestor Margaret Moore‘s recollections of the Siege of Londonderry in 1689. Understand motivations of Scotch-Irish and German immigrants during the 1700s and terms of their Carolina land grants. Understand relations between early Carolina immigrants and Native Americans. Understand why Scotland‘s heroine Flora Macdonald came to live in North Carolina in 1774.
