  • Ermanno Olmi
Film at Lincoln Center and Istituto Luce Cinecittà Present Ermanno Olmi June 14–26 Tickets: filmlinc.org Ermanno Olmi is a key Italian filmmaker of his generation whose career spanned more than six decades. Updating the stylistic hallmarks of Italian neorealism to craft fiction films full of light and dignity, Olmi time and again portrayed the experience of work and family and expressed the churn of history with humor and grace. Known for his commitment to working with nonprofessional actors and to capturing the specific textures of the locations in which he filmed, Olmi, who started out as a self-taught documentarian, drew inspiration from his Catholic faith and from the social and cultural preoccupations of his native Lombardy region— personified by peasants in rural farming communities or by white-collar workers in the provincial capital of Milan. But Olmi, who passed away last year at age 86, was also always concerned with the political and economic systems underlying the social and physical environments in which his characters lived and dreamed. Join Film at Lincoln Center and the Istituto Luce Cinecittà in paying homage to this singular and sophisticated voice in Italian cinema. Organized by Florence Almozini and Dan Sullivan of Film at Lincoln Center, and by Camilla Cormanni and Paola Ruggiero of Istituto Luce Cinecittà. Co-produced by Istituto Luce Cinecittà, Rome. Presented in association with the Ministry of Culture of Italy. #filmlinc Photo by Kash Gabriele Torsello The Cardboard Village The Circumstance Italy, 2011, 87m Italy, 1973, 35mm, 97m At the age of 80, Olmi directed his The modernist tendencies that Olmi penultimate fiction film, a striking flirted with throughout the 1960s parable about the defense of faith and ’70s reached their most intense in a world posed to deny it.

  • Ermanno Olmi Obituary
Ermanno Olmi obituary Italian director who won the Palme d’Or for his 1978 film The Tree of Wooden Clogs John Francis Lane Tue 8 May 2018 03.21 AEST Last modified on Wed 9 May 2018 07.00 AEST Ermanno Olmi in Cannes in 1978. Photograph: Levy/AP As he typically explored spiritual conflicts within families, the director Ermanno Olmi, who has died aged 86, was something of an outsider in his native Italy , where orthodox Catholics thought him too progressive and militant communists considered him too much of a reactionary Catholic. Only after his most acclaimed film, L’Albero degli Zoccoli (The Tree of Wooden Clogs, 1978) won him the Palme d’Or at Cannes did Olmi get recognition at home as well as abroad. A native of Lombardy, born in Bergamo and brought up in nearby Treviglio, he used the northern region as the setting for many of his films. Olmi kept notebooks recording the tales his grandmother told him about her early life as a peasant, and they provided the material for The Tree of Wooden Clogs, which has an agricultural setting. To the criticisms that his film’s rural family was not rebellious enough, a resentful Olmi replied that they rebelled in the only way possible for them – by sending their brightest child to school. When I interviewed Olmi for the South Bank Show a few years after he made the film, he said he had aimed to express what the poet Andrea Zanzotto once described as “the whisper of the generations”. When Olmi was three years old, his father, who worked on the railways, moved the family to Milan.

  • Glossary of Basic Film Terms
GLOSSARY OF BASIC FILM TERMS Aysnchronous sound: Sound that does not have its source in the film image. Available lighting: The use of only that light which actually exists on location, either natural (the sun) or artificial (household lamps). Back-lighting: Lighting in which the main source of illumination is directed towards the camera, thus tending to throw the subject into silhouette. Bird’s-eye view: A shot in which the camera photographs a scene from directly overhead. Close-up: A detailed view of a person or object, usually without much context provided. Continuity: The kind of logic implied in the association of ideas between edited shots. “Cutting to continuity” emphasizes smooth transitions between shots, in which space and time are unobtrusively condensed. “Classical cutting” emphasizes dramatic or emotional logic between shots rather than one based strictly on considerations of time and space. In “thematic montage” the continuity is based entirely on ideas, irrespective of literal time and space. In some instances, “continuity” refers to the space-time continuum of reality before it is photographed. Contrapuntal sound: Sound that counterpoints, or contrasts with, the image. Crane shot: A shot taken from a special device called a crane, which resembles a huge mechanical arm. The crane carries the camera and cameraman, and can move in virtually any direction. Cross-cutting: The alternating of shots from two sequences, often in different locales, to suggest that the sequences are taking place simultaneously. Deep focus, or depth of field: A technique of photography that permits all distance planes to remain clearly in focus, from close-up range to infinity.
