• Musician and Producer Randall Dunn on Knowing When the Time Is Right
December 12, 2018 - As told to J. Bennett, 2269 words. Tags: Music, Production, Process, Inspiration, Collaboration. On knowing when the time is right Musician and producer Randall Dunn on waiting to make his first solo album, what he learned from working on film scores with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, and what you learn from years of collaborating. You once described yourself as a frustrated filmmaker who has since become a producer and recording engineer. Can you tell me a little bit about that process—how you went from one to the other? I started originally wanting to work in film and be a director. In high school, me and my friends made these crazy VHS movies that we would edit at the community access cable station in our hometown. I hadn’t ever really thought about making music, but I was always interested in music and at that time—the late ‘80s and early ’90s—it was hard not to be. And so music was always kind of going hand in hand with how I thought about film or scenery. I ended up going to Seattle to look into doing sound design for film, and then I fell in with this group of musicians there who were all really incredible and super active at the time. And then I just sort of went in that direction because everybody I was working with was so creative visually. I found it easy to plug the same sort of creativity into that, and it just kind of became a career in the end.

  • Jovino Santos Neto Photo by Daniel Sheehan LETTER from the DIRECTOR Listening Forward to October 7!
A Mirror and Focus for the Jazz Community September 2018 Vol. 34, No. 09 EARSHOT JAZZSeattle, Washington Jovino Santos Neto Photo by Daniel Sheehan LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Listening Forward to October 7! The 30th Earshot Jazz Festival is right around the corner, and we are stoked to the maximum. The schedule is all set, tickets are on sale, and further details are on their way to metaphorical telephone poles all around the city. This is going to be fun!! We’re going to come out swinging hard on October 7, with events at KEXP, the Triple Door, and Lo-Fi, and continue with more than 60 events in venues all around the city through November 4. Each ensemble in each concert holds its own special magic, but as a whole, this festival reflects Seattle’s distinctive taste for innovation, and captures a panorama snapshot of the ever-expanding universe of jazz, “America’s greatest gift to world culture.” Over its 30-year history, the Earshot festival has presented many of the giants of the art form from around the world. (I’m hoping to include a full list in next month’s issue.) In serving Seattle artists, educators, and audi- ences over that time, Earshot has also come to reflect the “personality” of Seattle’s creative community, presenting an overall lineup that includes over 60% Seattle resident artists, and engaging audiences with compel- ling music that reflects both the history and the progression of the music. Every advancement in art comes from individual challenges to existing structures. That’s where jazz lives.

  • Questions of Genre in Drone Metal Owen Coggins Abstract
“Record Store Guy’s Head Explodes and the Critic is Speechless!” Questions of Genre in Drone Metal Owen Coggins Abstract This article examines questions of genre in the translocal and marginal music culture of drone metal, a radically slow and extended form of metal founded on extremes of amplification, distortion and repetition. I examine the tentative formation of genre in connections forged between musicians and between recordings, establishing sonic and symbolic conventions. I note the deliberate associations with bands (notably Black Sabbath) which situated this music as metal. I then turn to the role of listener discourse in constituting genre, attending to listeners’ experience of and communication about the key terms ‘drone’ and ‘metal’. After noting the importance of vagueness and ambiguity in genre designations, particularly in drone metal’s translocal marginality, I show that relevant genre characteristics for listeners include not just musical sounds, but also affective, experiential, embodied and conscious subjective states. Finally, I suggest that treating genre as a constellation of points, viewed in different but related ways from different standpoints, is particularly useful in understanding drone metal as a loosely constituted genre with fragmented, disparate and intermittently connected audiences. Introduction The ‘questions of genre in drone metal’ in the title of this article immediately betray a tension, in implying that drone metal is already a thing that can be coherently discussed, even if genre is to then be questioned. Genre relates to issues of origins (Brown, 2015), and is always a matter of ongoing contestation and negotiation of boundaries which include and exclude (Frith, 1 1996, p.
