The CONTINUED ON P. 48 plains, fascinatingly, that while events oc- cur within time, ideas transcend it. Ideas don’t “happen”; they simply are. They exist beyond the process of time. When thinking about and relating to ideas, we step outside the here and now and connect to something outside the movement of the clock, beyond the passing of time. With this in mind and Pesach approaching, let us explore a fasci- nating idea related to time and its connec- tion to Pesach. Pesach: Holiday of Time Time is one of the predominant themes of Pesach, but expresses itself in such a unique and puzzling manner. On Pesach, we are commanded to eat matzah – unleavened bread – and are absolutely forbidden to eat chametz – leavened bread. This transcends logical explanation, as the only difference between something being matzah or chametz is a single second. This means that a single second can determine your spiritual reality, dictating whether you performed a or violated the most severe of prohibitions, whose punishment is kareis – spiritual exci- sion. Why is time such a central aspect of Pesach, and how can a second of time have such signifi cant implications? Why the Rush? Let us trace this theme of time through the story of Y’tzias Mitzrayim, the exodus from Egypt. The Torah commands us to eat matzah on Pesach because the Jewish Peo- ple left Mitzrayim “b’chipazon” – in great haste (D’varim 16:3). The Jewish People were forced to eat matzah because they did not have enough time to make bread. The Arizal, a famous 16th century kabbalist, makes an intriguing statement about time and its meaning in the Pesach story. He posits that had the Jewish People remained in Egypt for even one more second at the point of the Exodus, they would have reached the 50th

But just so we’re clear, it is only the sec- ondary job of public health offi cials to con- tain an outbreak. Their primary purpose is to prevent such outbreaks from happening. Over the course the last century, public health offi cials have been the driving force behind many initiatives that have improved the nation’s health, saved countless lives, and prevented widespread disease. Vacci- nation advocacy is only a small example of their work that includes pushing lawmak- ers to pass seatbelt laws, warning about the dangers of nicotine, and the fl uoridation of drinking water. All of these movements have led to the overall improvement of health in the 20th century, and until very recently, vac- cines were considered to be an overwhelm- ing success. I won’t bother explaining the anti-vaxxer movement at this point, but let’s just say that some pseudoscience has recent- ly picked up steam in a variety of communi- ties that urges parents to forgo vaccines for their children. He was not the only Republican to believe this. Rep. Louie Gohmert also made the same argument the next day. That misunderstanding could be excused in 1932; however, it is incomprehensible in 2019. It has been less than 75 years since the end of World War II, and two sitting members of Con- gress do not know that the Nazis were fascists and not socialists. The Nazis, and in particular Hitler, are the poster child for fascism and not socialism. When this was pointed out to Gohmert by two Jewish members of Congress, Gohmert denied it. Ignorance and insensitivity toward the Jew- ish community and implied anti-Semitism is alive in Congress on both sides of the aisle. YHT Holds Group Hair Donation Event For Israeli Children With Cancer

eshiva Har Torah stu- dents, staff, and mothers Yparticipated in a group hair donation this past week. The donated ponytails will now be delivered to Zichron Mena- chem in Israel to make wigs for children with cancer. All par- ticipants were treated to hair- cuts donated by the DeFranco Spagnolo Salon in Great Neck and the school’s PTA, gift bags courtesy of Sarit Ebrani and Talia Levy of Manot4Chai, and fl owers from Metro Florals. When a benefi ciary of this outreach work seeks to further his knowledge of Torah, this is when Chazaq’s Yeshiva Gedola Beis Nosson Meir fi lls the void. “It has been about three years since this started with our Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Walkin coming in from Lakewood to do this,” said a member of the kollel, R’ David Kalmus. Raised secular, the Forest Hills resident was connected to the kollel by Chazaq Operations Manager R’ Yaniv Meirov, who has known Rabbi Aharon Walkin for many years. Today, thanks to the yeshivah, Kalmus is inspiring both public school students and businessmen alike by delivering various classes throughout the week. Recently, the yeshiva held a festive Melava Malka in Kew Gardens Hills to benefi t the Beth Midrash and Kollel. Rabbi Walkin showed a new side of him as he chose not to speak much at the event but rather sing as he joined special guest from Israel, Rabbi Shmuel Brazil and played the guitar, in what turned out to be a riveting kumsitz. The event provided an opportunity to meet the yeshivah’s teachers, students, and supporters. As diverse as the Queens Jewish community is, so is Chazaq’s Yeshiva Gedola in which its participants include Ashkenazim and Sefardim of all backgrounds, working men and full-time learners. “After receiving s’michah at Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim, I wanted to continue learn- ing and how we live our lives. HAFTR HS Attends Simon Wiesenthal Center High School Leadership Summit

delegation of seniors from HAFTR High School participated in the fi rst annual ASimon Wiesenthal Center High School Leadership Summit, hosted by Yeshiva Univer- sity last Tuesday. The Simon Wiesenthal Center inaugurated the regional summit to prepare stu- dents to respond to the challenges of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel activities facing Jewish students on college campuses. In addition to HAFTR High School, the summit included seniors from Ramaz, Magen David, Central, and Frisch yeshivah high schools. The Leadership Summit, which was spear- headed by Mr. Michael Cohen, Eastern Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, gave students the opportunity to hear from organizations that have a presence on campus. Mr. Jonathan Bridge, chief programming offi cer of , gave the keynote address. Students learned about the threats on campus from Ms. Melissa Weiss, SWC National Campus Outreach Director, who suggested effective strategies for situations they may encounter. A highlight of the program was the panel of student activists from Rutgers and Cornell. “It was very meaningful for our students to learn about the fi rst-hand experiences of these young people on their college campuses,” said Rabbi Ira Wallach, Judaic Studies Coordinator. The SCW expressed the organization’s appreciation to Mr. Yaron Kornblum, president of HAFTR, “whose vi- sion it was that led to the creation of this project.”

Faculty members Mr. Yitzchok Borenstein, Mrs. Marci Karoll, Mr. Yadin Klein, and Dr. Gili Nagar organized an “Amazing Race,” in which students had to complete various academic tasks, including determining the velocity of a rocket launch, writing with nature-related vo- cabulary, and fi guring out how to use a 40-foot string and a log to create a shape of the largest possible area. Students also had to make use of the various landmarks and monuments in the park; they used the Unisphere to answer geography questions and researched the his- tory of the park to understand its place in New York City history. “I really like this kind of learning,” said Rebecca Friedman. “It allows you to get more involved and experience the subjects.” Jessica Friedman added, “It was so great to be outside and active, and it was a great opportunity to bond with my grade.” Central Takes Double SKA Students Win First Place Bronze In The Science At New York Youth Summit ight students from the Stella K.
