As a result, the concept of charity (including the word itself) has become so coloured by legal definitions and distinctions that its real meaning has been somewhat marginalised. Charity, in its primary sense, is not a legal concept and has little to do with profit margins. It means that selfless love of neighbour which, in its Christian context, is rooted in the love of God. If this is the case, then the primary purpose of any 'charitable' institution should not be simply to raise bursaries or to share playing-fields. These are important projects in their own right, and they depend entirely on largely anonymous benefactors. But they also point to something deeper - the promotion, throughout our extended community, of personal attitudes of selfless and loving service. This is hard to quantify. It is one thing to claim that Ampleforth, because it is a Catholic and Benedictine school, promotes a 'culture' of charity, but is there any evidence that such a culture really exists in practice? Fortunately, there is. During the summer holidays of 2012, two boys, currently in the school, skate-boarded from Land's End to John O'Groats raising £21,000 for disabled children. If this were an isolated and private venture, it would be impressive enough in itself. If, however, it can be seen as part of a wider pattern, it becomes significant. A central article in this number of The Journal sets out some of the evidence for the existence of this wider pattern. There is so much data that it has to be presented in a somewhat condensed form. Many Amplefordians are named, ranging from 'the great and the good' to many who are only just setting out on their careers. The impact is intended to be cumulative, suggesting that the habit of giving is not simply an 6 EDITORIAL THE AMPLEFORTH JOURNAL VOL 1 16 THE ABBEY From the Abbot's Office RT REV CUTHBERT MADDEN OSB ABBOT OF AMPLEFORTH VERY great deal of the work of an Abbot might be characterised as 'routine Aduties.' This, of course, covers a multitude of tasks ranging from presiding at the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, through such concems as the pastoral care of the community, the government of its various works and the regular schedule of visits to our dependent works, which are at some distance from the Abbey. It might be of interest, then, to say a few words about the Congress of Abbots which occurs once every four years in Rome because this is not simply another part of 'routine duties.' The Congress met in mid September which is usually a pleasant time in Rome though this year the weather was surprisingly hot and humid. Some 270 Abbots gathered together with representatives from the various regions of the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum (CIB) and ecumenical observers. I should explain that the CIB is the organisation which draws together the Benedictine women throughout the world in much the same way as the Benedictine Confederation does for men. The Benedictine Confederation is largely the work of Leo XIII who in 1893 wanted to organise the independently-minded, autonomous, Benedictine houses into a worldwide order along the lines of the Franciscans and Dominicans. His efforts met with only partial success: the abbeys throughout the world remain autonomous but they are, in the main, gathered into groupings known as Congregations. Ampleforth, for example, is a member of the English Benedictine Congregation. The Congregations have an Abbot President who is a primus inter pares with certain specific duties, for example conducting the canonical visitations of the monasteries of the Congregation and presiding at Abbatial elections. Most of the ordinary business of the Confederation is transacted by the meeting of Presidents, but every four years all the Abbots of the Benedictine world gather together to elect an Abbot Primate, presently Abbot Notker Wolf of the St Ottilien Congregation, and to discuss matters of mutual interest or concern. 1 One fascinating aspect of the Congress is the world-wide nature of Benedictine monasticism. The majority of the houses of the Confederation are in Europe and the USA. Many of these houses are quite small - but each one is special for the area around it. It is the case, however, that between 20-25% of Benedictine houses are in the developing nations of the world - and the challenges for these houses are different from those facing the European and American houses.     Dear friends, I am pleased to announce that Father Michael Brunner, O.S.B. has been appointed the Prior-Administrator (interim superior) of Portsmouth Abbey in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. As you may recall, I was appointed to serve in this role last year, several months before my abbatial election at Saint Louis Abbey, and I have been doing so while continuing with my responsibilities here. Abbot Christo- pher Jamison, O.S.B., the Abbot President of our English Benedictine Congregation, appointed Father Michael to his new role with my blessing. I am confident that Father Michael will serve God, Portsmouth Abbey and Saint Louis Abbey well in this role. Father Michael has been serving both on the Council of Portsmouth Abbey and on the Board of Regents of Portsmouth Abbey School, and he is very familiar with the Portsmouth Abbey community. As you may recall, the monks of Portsmouth Abbey, who have been decreasing in number and increas- ing in age, have asked for the monks of Saint Louis Abbey to help reinvigorate their monastery by send- ing a small group of our monks to live there. In response to their request, the monks of Saint Louis Ab- bey agreed to enter into a collaboration with Portsmouth Abbey in which Saint Louis Abbey would send monks to Portsmouth for various periods of time to support them in their monastic life. At present, two monks of Saint Louis Abbey — Father Francis Hein, O.S.B. and Father Edward Mazuski, O.S.B. — re- side at Portsmouth Abbey. Father Michael will take up residence at Portsmouth Abbey in the months to come, once he is able to transition to others his responsibilities as Pastor of Saint Anselm Parish and as a teacher at Saint Louis Priory School.

Introduction - Membership: Since the last congress in 2012, the International Commission on Benedictine Education (ICBE) has hosted two conference of the Benedictine Educators’ Network (BeNet), on in Manila in 2013 and more recently in Rome in 2016. There have also been a some changes in the membership of ICBE since 2012. Br. Edward Englund, OSB, delegate for BeNet North America (USA) was called home to the Lord shortly after our last meeting in Manila. We remember him with affection and commend his soul to the mercy of God. The new delegate for BeNet North America is Mr. Tim Molak, currently headmaster of Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, California. After many years of dedicated service, Sr. Mary McDonald, RGS has stepped down from the commission. The new delegate for BeNet Pacific (Australia), is Sr. Meg Kahler, RGS, in her role as a member of the Good Samaritan Education Mission. Mrs. Luz Maria Eguiguren stepped down as delegate for BeNet Latin America in order to assume a new role on the commission as our secretary for three years 2013-2016, replacing Fr. Geraldo Gonzalez y Lima, OSB of Colegio Santo Amercio in São Paolo, Brazil and currently serving as the treasurer of the Benedictine Confederation at Sant'Anselmo in Rome as well as host for BeNet 2016. The new delegate for the Spanish speaking schools of BeNet Latin America is Mr. Cristobal Valdez, emeritus headmaster of Colegio S. Anselmo, Santiago, Chile.     M I S S I O N as a J O U R N E Y to H O L I N E S S Br. Sixtus Roslevich, O.S.B. Last March, Sister Elizabeth Castro and her Office for Religious of the Diocese had planned for all of us to spend a day together here at Portsmouth Abbey and Portsmouth Abbey School. It was scheduled for Saturday, March 21, during our school’s spring break. We would have had the whole place mostly to ourselves, including the dining hall, for a Lenten Day of Recollection. You would have loved being on our 500-acre campus on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay. We all know what happened that week. As the soothsayer says in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, “Beware the Ides of March!” Little by little, closings and shutdowns and lockdowns occurred due to the coronavirus, and our Day of Recollection was one of the first of many events to be canceled. I’d like to thank Sister Elizabeth for her patience and perseverance in finding a way for us to be together this afternoon in a safe and healthy manner, almost one full year later. I met some of you in person on October 22, 2019, at Bishop Tobin’s Meeting of Major Religious Superiors in Pawtucket. There was only enough time for the briefest of introductions among the group so, to maybe refresh your memory, I’ll tell you that my name is Brother Sixtus Roslevich. I am a Benedictine monk of the Saint Louis Abbey in Missouri, and I am definitely not a major religious superior.
