Agronomy, Shahroud of University in Iran (2008). Abstract: Asafoetida is an oleo-gum-resin obtained from the exudates of the roots of the Iranian endemic medicinal plant, F. asafoetida. It is used widely all over the world as a flavoring spice in a variety of foods. was analysed by GC and GC/MS. The constituents were identified by their mass spectra and Kovats' indices. Among those, The main constituents were (E)-1-propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (58.9%), (Z)-β-ocimene (11.9%), (E)-β-ocimene (9.0%), β-pinene (5.0%) and (Z)-1-propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (3.9%). INTRODUCTION The genus Ferula, the third largest genus of the Apiaceae (alt.Umbelliferae) family,is composed of ca. 180 species (Yaqoob and Nawchoo, 2016), 15 of whichare endemic to Iran (Mozaffarian, 1996),nine species to Turkey, seven to China (Yaqoob and Nawchoo, 2016) and one species to Italy, and the rest are indigenousentities of several other countries.The majority of the Ferula plants have a pungent odor and can beused for different purposes.In the literature, numerous reports have described various biolo- gical and medicinal activities for different essential oils and ex-tracts of the Ferula plants. -

It has received very little attention in terms of development, standardization of production technology, and plant protection management practices. Sher-e Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) and other organizations have instituted programs for systematic improvement of Kala zeera. In this paper, we offer a synopsis of the latest work being done in promoting this high value crop, which would have a beneficial effect for the encouragement of economic activity in the Himalayas. Major Lineages Within Apiaceae Subfamily Apioideae: a Comparison of Chloroplast Restriction Site and Dna Sequence Data1

DOWNIE Department of Plant Biology, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801 Traditional sources of taxonomic characters in the large and taxonomically complex subfamily Apioideae (Apiaceae) have been confounding and no classi®cation system of the subfamily has been widely accepted. A restriction site analysis of the chloroplast genome from 78 representatives of Apioideae and related groups provided a data matrix of 990 variable characters (750 of which were potentially parsimony-informative). A comparison of these data to that of three recent DNA sequencing studies of Apioideae (based on ITS, rpoCl intron, and matK sequences) shows that the restriction site analysis provides 2.6± 3.6 times more variable characters for a comparable group of taxa. Moreover, levels of divergence appear to be well suited to studies at the subfamilial and tribal levels of Apiaceae. Cladistic and phenetic analyses of the restriction site data yielded trees that are visually congruent to those derived from the other recent molecular studies. On the basis of these comparisons, six lineages and one paraphyletic grade are provisionally recognized as informal groups. These groups can serve as the starting point for future, more intensive studies of the subfamily. Key words: Apiaceae; Apioideae; chloroplast genome; restriction site analysis; Umbelliferae. Additionally, maximum-likelihood analyses were performed for data subsets comprising Apium, Daucus and Lilaeopsis. For Chaerophyllum, maximum-likelihood and beast analyses were carried out using combined chloroplast DNA and ITS data. Biogeographical scenarios were inferred using diva and lagrange. Results The sister group to Aciphylleae is the Sino-Himalayan Acronema clade and the divergence between these two lineages is dated at 34.8 Ma, whereas the radiation of Aciphylleae started 11.0 Ma. -

This diversity is particularly evident in Scandiceae subtribe Daucinae, a group encompassing species with wings or spines developing on fruit secondary ribs. In this paper, we explore fruit evolution in 86 representatives of Scandiceae and outgroups to assess adaptive shifts related to the evolutionary switch between anemochory and epizoochory and to identify possible dispersal syndromes, i.e., patterns of covariation of morphological and life-history traits that are associated with a particular vector. We also assess the phylogenetic signal in fruit traits. Principal component analysis of 16 quantitative fruit characters and of plant height did not clearly separate spe- cies having diferent dispersal strategies as estimated based on fruit appendages. Only presumed anemochory was weakly associated with plant height and the fattening of mericarps with their accompanying anatomical changes. We conclude that in Scandiceae, there are no distinct dispersal syndromes, but a continuum of fruit morphologies relying on diferent dispersal vectors. Phylogenetic mapping of ten discrete fruit characters on trees inferred by nrDNA ITS and cpDNA sequence data revealed that all are homoplastic and of limited use for the delimitation of genera. -
