STUDENT HANDOUT Antisemitic Words and Images ANTISEMITIC WORDS AND IMAGES STATEMENTS BACKGROUND [Discussing the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, which he labeled a “Jew Rick Wiles is a pastor and radio host in coup”] “That’s the way the Jews work. They are Florida, who made these comments in deceivers. They plot. They lie. They do whatever a viral video posted to his website and they’ve had to do to accomplish their political on YouTube. According to the Simon agenda…Should the Jews take over the country, they Wiesenthal Center, Wiles promotes will conduct a purge…That’s the next thing that racist and antisemitic conspiracy happens when Jews take over a country–they kill theories through his media outlet, millions of Christians.” TruNews, and claims 87,000 Facebook followers and nearly 60,000 on Twitter. — RICK WILES, NOVEMBER 22, 2019 One of his recent “godcasts” on YouTube was viewed over 250,000 times. “Jews were responsible for all of this filth and degenerate behavior that Hollywood is putting out, Louis Farrakhan has led the group, turning men into women and women into Nation of Islam, since 1977. According men…. White folks are going down. And Satan to the Southern Poverty Law Center, is going down. And Farrakhan, by God’s grace, has the group “is based on a fundamentally pulled a cover off of that Satanic Jew, and I’m here anti-white theology” and “Farrakhan to say your time is up, your world is through. You is an antisemite who routinely good Jews better separate because the satanic ones accuses Jews of manipulating the U.S. will take you to hell with them because that’s where government and controlling the levers they are headed.” of world power.” — MINISTER LOUIS FARRAKHAN, SAVIOUR’S DAY SPEECH, CHICAGO, IL, FEBRUARY 25, 2018 CONTEMPORARY ANTISEMITISM 1 IMAGES BACKGROUND In response to a data hack of a large bank, this cartoon depicts a wallet with a bank card and a presumably Jewish man with a balding scalp and hooked nose, hacking away at a laptop. In reality, the hacker was a software engineer who was neither Jewish nor an old man. This image plays on stereotypes of Jews as cunning, greedy, wicked, and in control of global financial institutions. The idea that Jews have large noses or other identifiable features is a myth. Depictions of Jews with distinctively large and hooked noses began in the 12th century as a way to mark them as grotesque and recognizable. Cartoon from Edmonton Journal (Canada), 2019 According to ADL, the Qatari media frequently demonizes Jews through cartoons that cross the line from legitimate criticism of Israel or its policies into overt antisemitism. This cartoon features a picture of a stereotypical-looking observant Jew driving a car while holding President Obama’s head in one hand like a stick shift and a steering wheel in the other fashioned out of the United Nations’ logo. The image evokes classic antisemitic myths of Jewish control, in this case of the U.S. government and the UN. Cartoon from Al-Watan newspaper (Qatar), September 2011 During the hearings of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh–who was accused of sexual harassment of a former classmate–flyers falsely blaming Jews for the assault claims were found on numerous college campuses across the country. This flyer depicts Kavanaugh surrounded by prominent Jewish figures, including billionaire George Soros and Senators Dianne Feinstein and Chuck Schumer. Stars of David are emblazoned across their foreheads and they are shown rubbing their hands together conspiratorially, in a manner that suggests shared secret knowledge. The flyer was created by supporters of the neo-Nazi organization The Daily Stormer, who were in favor of Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court. Daily Stormer Book Club flier, October 2018 CONTEMPORARY ANTISEMITISM 2 Patrick Little is an extreme right-wing political figure, who made a 2018 bid for U.S. Senate in California and was denounced by the Republican Party. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Little has denied the Holocaust and sees Adolf Hitler as “the second coming of Christ.” One of his campaign slogans is “Liberate the U.S. from the Jewish Oligarchy.” Little's anti-Semitic policy goals include making it illegal for people of Jewish faith to take office in government, outlawing foreign aid to Israel, and changing the U.S. Constitution to make the U.S. an explicitly “ethnically European nation.” He also wants to make it illegal for any foundation to raise money for Holocaust education. Nonprofit Security Grant Program Threat Incident Report: January 2019 to Present November 15, 2020 (Updated 02/22/2021) Prepared By: Rob Goldberg, Senior Director, Legislative Affairs [email protected] The following is a compilation of recent threat incidents, at home or abroad, targeting Jews and Jewish institutions (and other faith-based organization) that have been reported in the public record. When completing the Threat section of the IJ (Part III. Risk): ▪ First Choice: Describe specific terror (or violent homegrown extremist) incidents, threats, hate crimes, and/or related vandalism, trespass, intimidation, or destruction of property that have targeted its property, membership, or personnel. This may also include a specific event or circumstance that impacted an affiliate or member of the organization’s system or network. ▪ Second Choice: Report on known incidents/threats that have occurred in the community and/or State where the organization is located. ▪ Third Choice: Reference the public record regarding incidents/threats against similar or like institutions at home or abroad. Since there is limited working space in the IJ, the sub-applicant should be selective in choosing appropriate examples to incorporate into the response: events that are most recent, geographically proximate, and closely related to their type or circumstance of their organization or are of such magnitude or breadth that they create a significant existential threat to the Jewish community at large. I. The message of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is straightforward, and terrifying: The rise of liberalism had provided Jews with the tools to destroy institutions—the nobility, the church, the sanctity of marriage—whole. Soon, they would take control of the world, as part of a revenge plot dating back to the ascendancy of Christendom. The text, ostensibly narrated by a Jewish leader, describes this plan in detail, relying on centuries-old anti-Jewish tropes, and including lengthy expositions on monetary, media, and electoral manipulation. It announces Jewry’s triumph as imminent: The world order will fall into the hands of a cunning elite, who have schemed forever and are now fated to rule until the end of time. It was a fabrication, and a clumsy one, largely copied from the obscure, French- language political satire Dialogue aux enfers entre Machiavel et Montesquieu, or The Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu, by Maurice Joly.

  • Modern Antisemitism in Progressive Circles?
Denison University Denison Digital Commons Denison Student Scholarship 2021 Modern Antisemitism in Progressive Circles? Jacob Dennen Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.denison.edu/studentscholarship Modern Antisemitism in Progressive Circles? Jacob Dennen Dr. Paul A. Djupe, Advisor Senior Honors Research Abstract In recent years, anti-Zionism and anti-Israel rhetoric have become hallmarks of the American Left. Moreover, many on the Left have downplayed or denied the severity of antisemitism. This paper seeks to determine how widespread overt and latent antisemitism are among the Left. More specically, it seeks to determine if there is a double standard applied to antisemitism that could be indicative of latent antisemitism as well as if the anti-Zionist rhetoric is the result of latent antisemitism. To do so, respondents in a nationally-representative survey were given questions designed to determine overt antisemitism, as well as two dierent experiments designed to elicit latent antisemitism. The results showed that latent antisemitism does not appear for any of the ideological groups on the Left in the context of ghting discrimination. However, it does appear among Liberals as it relates to self-determination and Progressives when Israel is mentioned. These ndings help illuminate how the Left views antisemitism, the relationship between anti-Zionism and the Left, as well as how widespread latent and overt antisemitism are among the Left. 1 Introduction Where the Right ghts for freedom and liberty, the Left ghts for equality and egalitarianism. The Left has been actively involved in feminism, anti-racism, and the ght for LGBTQ rights and equality. Although each movement comes and goes in intensity and scope with the current focus on anti-racism, the Left readily calls out sexism, homophobia/transphobia, racism, and other forms of prejudice when they appear.

  • Caucasian Phobias and the Rise of Antisemitism in the North Caucasus in the 1920S
Th e Soviet and Post-Soviet Review 36 (2009) 42–57 brill.nl/spsr Caucasian Phobias and the Rise of Antisemitism in the North Caucasus in the 1920s Lyudmila Gatagova Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences Abstract Before 1917 the North Caucasus witnessed almost no Jewish pogroms. After the Revolution, traditional Armenophobia began to decline and was replaced by a growing Judeophobia. Th e fi rst victims of the increasing anti-Semitism were the Mountain Jews. In the summer of 1926, there was a massive pogrom of Mountain Jews in Makhachkala and there were simultaneous pogroms in several other localities. Keywords North Caucasus, Armenia, antisemitism, mountain Jews, Armenophobia, pogrom Th e North Caucasus was not part of the Pale of Settlement, and therefore the percentage of Jewish population in the region was very low even in the towns, where there were only an insignifi cant number of Jews, primarily merchants and artisans. European Jews began to appear in the territory only in the 19th century, the only exception being Dagestan, where the compact communities of Mountain Jews had lived since the early Middle Ages. As a consequence, prior to 1917, the North Caucasus had experienced neither anti-Jewish pogroms, nor antisemitism. In their stead, Armenophobia dominated virtu- ally the entire region. In the absence of a Jewish population, Jew-baiting was practically non-existent. Th e closest analogy was to be found in hostile attitudes to Armenians. 1 In a sense, in the North Caucasus, the Armenians substituted for Jews as an incarnation of evil. 1 ) E.H.

  • Trunews and Rick Wiles: "End Times" Anti- Semitism and Anti-Zionism
TruNews and Rick Wiles: "End Times" Anti- Semitism and Anti-Zionism Rick Wiles Updated January 13, 2020 UPDATE: On January 13, 2020, TruNews announced that Paypal, as well as the donor management companies Bloomerang and Spreedly, had stopped processing their donations. TruNews claims it is still able to process online credit card contributions via Stripe. In an anti-Semitic, conspiracy theory-laced letter to supporters, TruNews founder Rick Wiles ascribed the change to his coverage of "Israeli Mossad’s blackmail operation through the fake billionaire Jeffrey Epstein," adding that we live in "Bolshevik, Zionist America." 1 / 7 Wiles has devoted extensive TruNews coverage to the conspiracy theory that Jeffrey Epstein was an Israeli agent who offered sex with underage girls to American politicians and businessmen in order to blackmail them into supporting Israel. "The success of Jeffrey Epstein’s blackmail operation explains how Israel secretly seized control of America over the past thirty years," Wiles said on the January 9, 2020 episode of TruNews. He continued, "The kosher coverup continues, where America’s elite, [are] working overtime to cover up the Israeli child sex blackmail operation that was going on in this country for at least thirty years." TruNews is a funfunfunfundamdamdamdamentalistentalistentalistentalist Christian ChristianChristianChristian streaming news and opinion platform that has increasingly featured anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist content, and also has a long record of disseminating radical Islamophobic and anti-LGBTQ messages. Founded in 1999 by Rick Wiles and affiliated with Flowing Streams Church in Vero Beach, FL, where Wiles is senior pastor, TruNews was previously known as America’s Hope, American Freedom News, and briefly as Christian News Channel.

  • Antisemitism
Antisemitism Hatred of Jews as a people or of "the Jew" as a concept. The term “antisemitism” was first coined in the late 1870s, subsequently it is used with reference to all types of Jew-hatred - both historical and contemporary. The word itself comes from the idea that Hebrew belongs to the Semitic language family, and thus Jews must be "Semites." Many other languages also belong to the Semitic language family, such as Arabic and Amharic, and therefore other cultures could also be called "Semites." However, there is no such thing as "Semitism" and no other groups have ever been included in the hatred and prejudice denoted by antisemitism. The word itself is a good example of how, during the late nineteenth century, Jew-haters pretended that their hatred had its basis in scholarly and scientific ideas. Jew-hatred is not a modern phenomenon—it may be traced back to ancient times. Traditional antisemitism is based on religious discrimination against Jews by Christians. Christian doctrine was ingrained with the idea that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus, and thus deserved to be punished (this is known as the Deicide, or Killing of God, Myth). Another concept that provoked hatred of Jews amongst Christians was the Supercession Myth, claiming that Christianity had replaced Judaism, due to the Jewish People’s failure in their role as the Chosen People of God—and thus deserving punishment, specifically by the Christian world. Over the centuries various stereotypes about Jews developed. Individual Jews were not judged based on their personal achievements or merits, but rather were seen on the whole as greedy, devilish, standoffish, lazy, money-grubbing, and over-sexed.
