Dear Point Supporters,

Our abilities as individuals to effect change may seem small, but we can accomplish much when we share a common vision and sense of purpose. Mother Teresa said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”

Point Foundation is a community of individuals making it possible for LGBTQ young people to achieve a higher education degree and avail themselves of greater opportunities in life. Each scholar we help is a ripple, and collectively, our 80 current Point Scholars and 184 Point Alumni are a wave of change moving through society.

To achieve our mission and help as many young people as possible, the Point family of scholars, alumni, board members, trustees, mentors and staff, must continue to change and evolve. “New” may not always result in “improved,” but stasis never leads to success.

The Point family is a close-knit group embracing big aims and proud achievements. Some of what we do started off as a ripple and then grew, such as launching a new social media campaign this year - educate2impact - to encourage students to stay in school and get their degree. Point also partnered with Campus Pride to create an online National LGBT Scholarship Database, a comprehensive public resource of scholarship and funding resources.

At other times, we make a big splash. This year we honored acclaimed TV producer Dr. Neal Baer, and “Girls” creator and star Lena Dunham, at our Point Honors gala at the landmark New York Public Library building on Fifth Avenue. Point also scored big in being able to honor the the first openly gay player to play in any of the North American pro sports leagues, Jason Collins, at our Leadership Dinner, and songwriter Diane Warren at the Voices On Point dinner and concert in Los Angeles. We are especially proud that both Dr. Baer and Mr. Collins have joined our honorary board.

Everyone who supports the work of Point Foundation and our Point Scholars is helping to make waves of change in society. A contribution of time or resources to Point is a ripple that touches others. It inspires all of the Point family to keep working toward a sea change that will bring equitable opportunities and rights to LGBTQ people everywhere.

On behalf of Point Foundation and our Point family, thank you for the support that keeps hope and encouragement flowing to LGBTQ students.

Sincerely, Richard Ziegelasch Kevin Chase Jorge Valencia Board of Directors, Board of Directors, Executive Director Co-Chair Co-Chair & CEO

Point Foundation • 2013-2014 Annual Report • 7 LEADERSHIP

The 2014 Point Foundation Scholar & Alumni Leadership Conference was held in Boston for four busy and fun days of programing and events. This year’s conference theme, “On the Freedom Trail to Full Equality,” allowed the 170 members of the Point family in attendance – scholars, alumni, board members, trustees and staff – to acknowl- edge Boston’s vital role in the history of our nation, higher education, activism and LGBTQ equality.

Conference highlights included a conversation with New York Times best-selling author Janet Mock, moderated by Point Alum Derrick Clifton; a “State of the Community” session, featuring a briefing from White House LGBT Liaison Gautam Raghavan; a walking tour ex- ploring Boston’s LGBTQ history; and screenings of the documentary “TWO: The Story of Roman and Nyro,” and the Amazon web series “Transparent,” whose cast includes Point Honorary Board member Judith Light and Associate Producer, Point Alum Rhys Ernst. Con- ference programing also included sessions on sharpening advocacy skills, personal and professional development, a scholar panel on in- tersectionality, and a scholar poster fair depicting their community service projects and academic research. A conference app for smart- phones kept attendees up-to-date and proved a popular way to share photos and messages.

8 • Point Foundation • 2013-2014 Annual Report “The Point Scholar & Alumni Leadership Conference is my yearly pick-me-up. It is sometimes hard to keep the same level of energy and passion in my work throughout the year but being surrounded by such creative and ambitious students inspires me to keep going. During this weekend, I am reminded of what it is to be a Point scholar-a fighter, an innovator, and a friend.” – Navidra Hardin, Point Scholar

NAVIDRA HARDIN

After his father passed away in 2009, Navidra realized that life is too short to have regrets and he decided to to come out of the closet. Navidra’s family, viewing homosexuality as “unnatural” and “sinful,” cut off all financial assistance to him. Navidra’s Catholic school community was surprisingly more supportive, but, as the only openly gay student, he was discouraged from starting a Gay-Straight Alliance and other LGBTQ-related activities. Navidra has nonetheless persevered and uses these negative events as motivation in all aspects of his life. In keeping with his love of writing and speaking, Navidra is studying Journalism at Emerson College.

In his sophomore year, he founded his high school’s first Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) and became increasingly involved in LGBTQ education and activism. Eli is currently pursuing a degree in Neuroscience at Centenary College of Louisiana. He eventually hopes to become a plastic surgeon and integrate future research in neuroscience with the questions involving transgender patients, as well as help physicians to understand and serve the transgender community.

Point Foundation • 2013-2014 Annual Report • 11 INTERNSHIPS

Five years ago The Palette Fund partnered with Point to launch an internship program, which has made it possible for Point Scholars to spend the summer experiencing relevant, professional work that directly benefits LGBTQ community nonprofit organizations. Because The Palette Fund underwrites a stipend for the scholar, the participating nonprofits do not have to incur any costs for having a gifted student work with them during the summer.

This year Point Scholar Sy Abdul spent the summer helping people who are more than twice his age. A student at the University of Pennsylvania, Sy interned at the New York headquarters of Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE).

Thanks to the generosity of the Sheri & Les Biller Family Foundation and Gilbert Bryce, Point Scholar Navidra Hardin worked this summer on the Financial Freedom Project, a Point Initiative that provides scholars with financial education and literacy tools to help them achieve their life goals.

A number of Point’s corporate partners including NBCUniversal, Johnson & Johnson, Viacom, and Coda Leadership, also filled internship positions with Point Scholars.

For more information about providing internship opportunities to Point Scholars, please contact Point at [email protected], or call 866.33.POINT.

22 • Point Foundation • 2013-2014 Annual Report CORNERSTONE SOCIETY

Point Foundation’s Cornerstone Society is a philanthropic group of dedicated individuals who recognize the importance of empowering LGBTQ scholars through higher education. By contributing a minimum annual donation of $500, Cornerstone Society members ensure that Point can continue its mission of providing scholarships, mentorships and leadership training to all of our deserving scholars. Members can contribute one-time gifts or divide their donations into quarterly or monthly installments.

In order to reach and engage individuals throughout the country, Point Foundation hosts a series of Cornerstone Society events, planned in conjunction with local host committees. This year, Cornerstone receptions were held in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, the Hamptons, Los Angeles, Miami, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Each of these events featured presentations by scholars and/or alumni who shared their stories or struggle and success. Additionally, during the past year, Point Foundation has revamped benefits for Cornerstone Society members, and we plan on expanding opportunities for members to engage with the Foundation and our scholars throughout the year.

Joining the Cornerstone Society helps make a lifelong positive impact on LGBTQ scholars – and on society at large - through the power of education. We are deeply grateful to this year’s Cornerstone Society members.
