Welcome Alums A hearty welcome to the Homecom ing 1960 Football Game. One of the highlights of the fall sports season is the annual football contest between the University of Utah and our highly respected competitors from the State of Colorado — the Uni versity of Denver. It is a distinct pleasure to serve as hosts to our friends from the University of Denver during our Homecoming cele bration. It is our belief that the two institu tions of higher learning fielding compet ing teams this afternoon have a full understanding of the importance of athletic development in the education of our citizens of tomorrow. We sincerely hope this contest will be as thrilling and satisfying to all the fans as our previous contests have been. One of my most vivid early childhood memories comes from the fall of 1972 when, as a five year-old, I was reading the sports section of one of the Dallas newspapers at my grandparents’ breakfast table. I am not sure how much I comprehended, but one fact leaped clearly from the page—Nebraska had defeated Army by the seemingly incredible score of 77-7. Wild thoughts raced through my young mind. How could one team score so many points? How could they so thoroughly dominate an opponent? Just how bad was this Army outfit? How many touchdowns did it take to score seventy-seven points? I did not realize it at the time, but that was the day when I first understood concretely the concepts of multiplication and division. Nebraska scored eleven touchdowns I calculated (probably with some help from my grandfather) and my love of football and the sports page only grew from there.

Here is your 1961 Montana University football guide, a continuation of the new format that was established in 1959 by the MSU News Service. So far as football guides are concerned, we don’t pretend to compete with the slick printed brochures offered by many schools. This multilithed version is the Montana format for the simple reason that much of the material in any brochure is out of date once the season gets under way. As usual, this editor will follow usual procedure of providing comprehensive advance stories, feature material and photographs on a week-to-week basis, stressing mailing to areas where games are being played on a given weekend rather than saturating the field prior to the season We should also like to call your attention to “The Grizzly Gridiron,” a 175-page football history of the Grizzlies that was printed recently by the MSU Press.
