A hearty welcome to the Homecom ing 1960 Football Game. One of the highlights of the fall sports season is the annual football contest between the and our highly respected competitors from the State of Colorado — the Uni versity of Denver. It is a distinct pleasure to serve as hosts to our friends from the University of Denver during our Homecoming cele bration. It is our belief that the two institu tions of higher learning fielding compet ing teams this afternoon have a full understanding of the importance of athletic development in the education of our citizens of tomorrow. We sincerely hope this contest will be as thrilling and satisfying to all the fans as our previous contests have been. Regardless of your particular loy alty, may this be an event each of you will long remember.

Sincerely,

By Paul Cracroft Football programs have many uses. Some of which we can talk about politely include service as raincaps, bench-dusters, shoe-scrapers (every football game draws a dog, you know), insulation, sunshades (for those wonderful but rare day games) and even an occasional bit of reading matter if the action gets dull or the majorette puts her coat on.

But the nicest purpose of all from our standpoint is that which gives the University the chance to welcome back its many alumni (non-grads rate the title, too, if you don't already know) to Homecoming. There are about 60,000 of them now living — and their addresses probably don't change more than 13 times each year. More than half of them live within 50 miles of the campus. This is close enough for many of them (bless their hearts!) to support some if not all of the many University and alumni functions offered them each year . . . like this morning's PAUL CRACROFT Lecture Series, for instance. It's also close enough for a few of Alumni Secretary them (cuss 'em) to take the U for granted. Herewith (with probable interruptions) is our annual program greeting to you loyal alumni at today's game with your family: We're glad that you (yes, dear, of course yo u may have a hot dog) are here with (no, thanks, I just had one before the kickoff) us on this mo st pleasant occasion. (Omigosh! Really? Ninety- eight yards! Well, dear, he does have the right to stand up and he probably didn't know . . .) We hope that you'll see many new developments on (Well, Nora and Clyde! Didn't realize you sat so close to us at the games!) campus. Most of this has been made possible by the cooperation that mutually exists (Wheeeehew, Clyde, you're right, she has got a nice pair of 1 . . .) between .... She really has and it's a swell game. We'll send you the rest of that greeting in the mail.

One of the fine all around athletes at the University of Utah is senior Tom Lovat. Tom is not only one of the top • guards on the football squad but is also an All-Western Division catcher in baseball. Add to these facts that in high school he made both All-State football and baseball and wm honorable mention All-State in basketball and you get an Grade School indication of this Redskin's athletic abilities.

Tom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lovat of Bingham Canyon, Utah. He attended high school at Bingham High where besides being a fine athlete he was president of the men's honorary society — The Prospectors Club. Tom Lovat

As a senior at the University of Utah Tom is majoring in Physical Education and is a good student. He hopes to coach after graduation but is also interested in giving pro High School fessional baseball a "go". He has some other plans, in the marital vein, since he is now engaged to Lyn Boren, a niece of former Ute grid great Billy Boren.

Lovat is a member of the Marine Corps Reserves — The 21st Rifle Company. Another Ute star, Dennis Zito, is a member of the same Marine company.

Tom is considered by line coach John Nikcevich as one of the hardest workers on the ball club. Probably the outstanding element in Tom's collegiate athletics is the fact that he is a two sport man — not a common thing in college sports.

Shades of the old yearbook! Even more fun than looking back through the years is renewing old acquaintances at the "U" Homecoming, 1960 style.

With house decorations, street dance, skits and quartets, parade, pep rally and unequalled royalty, each event in the traditional schedule is reminiscent of former years but polished with this year's sparkle.

Tonight, Saturday, the annual Homecoming Dance will complete the week as the Mills Broth ers, world-renowned entertainers and recording stars, will be featured in the Union Building Ballroom.

Old grads and 1964 hopefuls look up to see King Football supersede all other royalty and cheer the Redskins to victory.

SEVERAL NEW HOUSING UNITS NEAR COMPLETION

These beautiful buildings are the modern new housing units for mar ried students at the University of Utah. Contractors for the project are ahead of schedule, making possible the opening of 91 units by December 15, 1960. On that date, Courts One and Two will be ready for occupancy. This means that 35 two-bedroom units and 56 one-bedroom units will be available ..for use. There are seven buildings per Court and seven apart ments in each individual structure.

Expected completion for the entire project is June 1, 1961. At that time there will be facilities for 299 student families in modern two-story buildings, landscaped to enhance the neighborhood and to provide play areas for children and adults. The attractive apartments are being built with an emphasis on utility as well as beauty. The project is Federally fin anced and self-liquidating.

The current residents of Stadium Village will be given the first oppor tunity to move into the new quarters.
