BCU Three Star White Water: Assessment Length: 1 Day (at a max ratio of 1:6) Pre-requisites Evidence (use a log-book) of AT LEAST: 8-10 paddling sessions (minimum 40 hours) in varied locations where possible; this should include evidence of having paddled grade 2 water. You should be using your log book to record all relevant experience on moving water. Testing (all to be demonstrated on both sides) Personal Skills: Lift, carry & launch (not seal launch) Personal Skills: Flat Water: Efficient forward paddling - Including against a current - Accelerate kayak - say across eddy line - Cruising Personal Skills: Moving sideways on the move Personal Skills: Supporting - Both low & high brace - Stationary and on the move Personal Skills: Rolling – able to roll, demonstrating capsize on both sides Personal Skills: Breaking in and out - Eddies (speed, angle, edge, trim, trimming, balance, trunk rotation) Personal Skills: Ferry gliding - Across Grade 2 flow without loss of height Personal Skills: S-turns Personal Skills: Maintaining direction Personal Skills: Changing direction Personal Skills: Reverse paddling and stopping Personal Skills: Surfing Rescue: Use of tape and karabiner (see below) Rescue: Eskimo rescue (both bow and paddle present) Rescue: Throwline rescue (minimum ten meters & one-minute limit) Rescue: Capsize, swim and self-rescue Rescue: Rescue a capsized, swimming paddler and their equipment(target: within 3 minutes) Paddle a section of Grade 2 water as part of a led group - Should be capable of and experience to operate as a Group on Grade 1 Theory and other Questions Full Information: http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/media/pdf/BCU 3 Star White Water Kayak Syllabi V3-0 Oct13.pdf Tape and Karabiner A mandatory item for the test - which you should own and (always) personally carry as a 3* kayaker.
