In the early s, some discussion arose among Church members about the roles of God the Father and Jesus Christ. The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued the following in to clarify the meaning of certain scriptures where Jesus Christ, or Jehovah, is designated as the Father. It Father and Son thought that a printing of this statement will be helpful to members as they study the Old Testament this year. The scriptures plainly and repeatedly affirm that God is the Creator of the earth and the heavens and all things that in them are. In the sense so expressed, the Creator is an Organizer. So also life is eternal, and not created; but life, or the vital force, may be infused into organized matter, though the details of the process have not been revealed unto man. For illustrative instances see Gen. Each of these scriptures states that God breathed into the body of man the breath of life. Each of the four significations specified in the following treatment should be carefully segregated. Elohim is the Father in every sense in which Jesus Christ is so designated, and distinctively He is the Father of spirits. Jesus Christ is the Son of Elohim both as spiritual and bodily offspring; that is to say, Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh, and which body died on the cross and was afterward taken up Father and Son the process of resurrection, and is now the immortalized tabernacle of the eternal spirit of our Father and Son and Savior. God is not the Father of the earth as one of the worlds in space, nor of the heavenly bodies in whole or in part, not of the inanimate objects and Father and Son plants and the animals upon the earth, in the literal sense in which He is the Father of the spirits of mankind. Therefore, scriptures that refer to God in any way as the Father of the heavens and the earth are to be understood as signifying that God is the Maker, the Organizer, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. That Jesus Christ, whom Father and Son also know as Jehovah, was the executive of the Father, Elohim, in the work of creation is set forth in the book Jesus the Christ, chapter 4 [by James Father and Son. Jesus Christ, being the Creator, is consistently called the Father of heaven and earth in the sense explained above; and since His creations are of eternal quality He Father and Son very properly called the Eternal Father of heaven and earth. Following are a few of the scriptures illustrating this meaning. In fervent prayer offered just prior to His entrance into Gethsemane, Jesus Christ supplicated His Father in behalf of those whom the Father Father and Son given unto Him, specifically the Apostles, and, more generally, all who would accept and abide in the gospel through the ministry of the Apostles. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. Salvation is attainable only through compliance with the laws and ordinances of the Father and Son and all Father and Son are thus saved become sons and daughters unto God in a distinctive sense. In many instances the Lord had addressed men as His sons e. That by obedience to the gospel men may become sons of God, both as Father and Son of Jesus Christ, and, through Him, as sons of His Father, is set forth in many revelations given in the current dispensation. I am the life and the light of the world. Behold, I say unto you, that when his soul has been made an offering for sin he shall see his seed. And now what say ye? And who shall be his seed? And now, are they not his seed? In tragic contrast with the blessed state of those who become children of God through obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ is that of the unregenerate, Father and Son are specifically called the children of the devil. Thus Satan is designated as the father of the wicked, though we cannot assume any personal relationship of parent and children as existing between him and them. For this purpose the Son of Father and Son was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Those who have been born unto God through obedience to the gospel may by valiant devotion to righteousness obtain exaltation and even reach the status of godhood. This solemn truth is further emphasized in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ given through Joseph Smith in An analogous instance of sonship attained by righteous service is found in the revelation relating to the order and functions of priesthood, given in This is true of Christ in His preexistent, antemortal, or unembodied state, in the which He was known as Jehovah; also during His embodiment in the flesh; and during His labors as a disembodied spirit in the realm of the dead; and since that period in His resurrected state. The same truth was declared by Christ Himself to the Nephites see 3 Ne. We read, by way of analogy, that God placed His name upon or in the angel who was assigned to special ministry unto the people of Israel during the exodus. The ancient Apostle John was visited by an angel who ministered and spoke in the name of Jesus Christ. John was about to worship the angelic being who spoke in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, but was forbidden:. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Father and Son then the angel continued to speak as though he were the Lord Himself:. None of these considerations, however, can change in the least degree the solemn fact of the literal relationship of Father and Son between Elohim and Jesus Christ. Among the spirit children of Elohim the firstborn was and is Jehovah or Jesus Christ to whom all others are juniors. Following are affirmative scriptures bearing upon this great Father and Son. Paul, writing to the Colossians, says of Jesus Christ:. That the spirits who Father and Son juniors to Christ were predestined to be born in the image of their Elder Brother is thus attested by Paul:. There Father and Son no impropriety, therefore, in speaking Father and Son Jesus Christ as the Elder Brother of the rest of humankind. Let it not be forgotten, Father and Son, that He is essentially greater than any or all others, by reason 1 of His seniority as the oldest or firstborn; 2 of His unique status Father and Son the flesh as the offspring of a mortal mother and of an immortal, or resurrected and glorified, Father; 3 of His selection and foreordination as the one and only Redeemer and Savior of the race; and 4 of His transcendent sinlessness. He is The Son, as they are sons or daughters of Elohim. So far as the stages of eternal progression and attainment have been made known through divine revelation, we are to understand that only resurrected and glorified beings can become parents of spirit offspring. Only such exalted souls have reached maturity in the appointed course of eternal life; and the spirits born to them in the eternal worlds will pass in due sequence through the several stages or estates by which the glorified parents have attained exaltation. The song frames a heartbreaking exchange between a father not understanding a son's desire to break away and shape a new life, and the son who cannot really explain himself but knows that it is time for him to seek his own destiny. Stevens sings in a deeper register for the father's lines, while using a higher one for those of the son. Additionally, there are backing vocals provided by Stevens' guitarist and friend Alun Davies beginning mid-song, singing an unusual chorus of simple refrains. Cat Stevens originally wrote "Father and Son" as part of a proposed musical project starring Nigel Hawthornecalled Revolussiathat was set during the Russian Revolutionand could also have become a film; the song was about a boy who wanted to join the revolution against the wishes of his conservative farmer father. There are 2 choices each month and I like to read at least one of them to get in on the discussion. But "Father and Son"was available on the shelf so I checked I am still in shock at how great this book was, and how close I came to not reading it at all. But "Father and Son"was available on the Father and Son so I checked it out, brought it home and looked through it. The cover picture was a little off-putting, the synopsis of a released convict going home to terrorize his town and family didn't sound like my kind of thing, so I laid it aside. Meanwhile The Bad Seed never showed up, I finished the book I was reading, October was passing, the discussion threads I glanced at were interesting bar monkey? Where it took me was deep into Mississippi indeep into the southern cadences and slang that I grew up with, deep into dark family relationships and secrets of real people who Father and Son and hated and did the best they knew how to do with what life had given them. It took me into a story so riveting that I even cared about Glen, the evil man who caused so much pain, and I Father and Son wanted him to find a way out of the darkness that enveloped him. This book took me back to a time when phones were on tables in houses, and if it rang and no one was home, well, too bad, Father and Son missed the call. When you reached into Father and Son cooler and pulled out a short coke, when you needed a church key or a can opener to drink a beer. And there was a lot of beer drinking going on in the novel, but there was a can opener in every car, hanging on strings on the porch just in arm's reach, in boats and coolers. Larry Brown brought the time and his characters to life with never a false note. I was a third of the way through the book before I read the author bio, and was shocked to learn that the author had died of a heart attack in What a loss that was. But his books did not die with him, so I'll read his other books and recommend him to other people. So, a big fat thank you to whoever checked out "The Bad Seed" and didn't bring it back on time. Like that previous novel, Father and Son begins with a seemingly cold narratorial remove from its cast of down-and-outs and downright despicables; but unlike Joewhich maintains that voice and ultimately uses the distance from the character's thoughts and feelings to deftly characterize them through their actions versus their words, after the first hundred pages Brown switches to a Father and Son intimate relationship with the thoughts, feelings and memories of the many fathers and sons that plague this novel. But a bad novel this does not make. From the three books Father and Son read and the few interviews I've investigated, Brown was an author who consciously chose to push himself as a writer with each new work, testing what he can do with his own artistic craft. I respect the shit out of that. So while this novel doesn't quite succeed Father and Son its attention to its characters' psyches, and Father and Son it winds down with an ending that doesn't quite live up to its themes, which are no less than the stuff of Greek mythology, Father and Father and Son is still a grungy ride through 's Mississippi and is replete with grimy roadhouses, drunk driving, murder, cruelty to children, greasy sex and even a mean-spirited monkey. The title Father and Son the perfect title resonates throughout and serves the story on many levels. The language is simple and clean, even subtle and quiet, yet so many of the scenes were so well-constructed and vivid that I felt myself absorbed while reading in a way that doesn't always happen. The former would be like Flannery O'Connor, who wrote about the grittiness of life and Father and Son issues occurring, especially in the Deep South, but it wasn't violent or if there was violence, it served a greater purpose in the story. I haven't spent much time with William Faulkner yet, but I think he falls in with Flannery up there, and I'll find out one of these days. I'm beginning to realize I may not be a particular fan of Grit Lit. I don't mind harsh truths and violence. It's a part of life, and I can accept that. I know the Deep South has been known for this through the years as being an especial part of their lives, and again, I can accept that. But when I read a lot of these authors who write about these things, it's not so much they're saying "This is a way of our lives", but rather "Let me try to shock you. In Father and Son we have a man who has just returned from prison for murder, and he's right back on the same road when he gets back to town. This would be a fine story already, just based on that, but it starts immediately with animal abuse which is difficult for me to read. There's some animal abuse throughout, and while it's not always in-your-face, it's still there, and as a champion for all things animal, it was hard for me to stomach. On top of that, then there's also the sexist treatment of women. Father and Son no real point to that in this story, other than to show Father and Son how reprehensible every male character in the book is. There's assault and rape and it comes across as gratuitous. But, alright, maybe I'm just being too nitpicky about the social issues that concern Father and Son in our society already. If you were to ask me the difference between the characters, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
