WHY FARMERS MAKE GOOD SOLDIERS

Letter to Home

Dear Ma A Pa,

I Am well. Hope you are. Tell brother Walt A brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt A Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, they git warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc...,but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie, and other regular food. But tell Walt A Elmer you can always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on route marches, which the Platoon Sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys gets sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sergeant is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt. is like the school board. Majors A Colonels just ride around A frown. They don't bother you none. This next will kill Walt A Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don t know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and don t move. And it ain't shooting back at you, like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is to lay there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Be sure to tell Walt A Elmer to hurry A join before other fellers get into this setup A come stampeding in. Your loving daughter. VILLAGE OF MILO MINUTES

Health Link Extended To Rural Communities: Popular service offers information over the telephone

By Pamela Roth, Calgary Health Region Staff Writer

Wednesday, April 30 - When Alistair Keith was still vomiting at 3 a.m. one recent morning, he knew something had to be terribly wrong. His faced was flushed, his stomach was extremely sore, and he wasn't sure what to do or where to go. Then he dialed Health Link, (943-LINK), the Calgary Health Region's popular telephone medical information service. After a brief exchange of information, a nurse evaluated his symptoms and advised him to go to the nearest emergency room, where he was diagnosed and treated for stomach flu. I felt so relieved when I found out what I should do," said Keith. "I'm so glad they were there, otherwise I just would have stayed home and worried about myself all night." The Calgary man is one of a growing number of people who have come to appreciate the value of Health Link. And that number is expected to grow with the decision to extend the service to rural parts of the Region. Effective today, an estimated 78,000 residents living in communities surrounding Calgary will be able to use Health Link to obtain information on a wide range of health subjects, such as how to find a doctor, where to get a flu shot and what to do for a child's fever. The service is now available in an area that includes Lake Louise to the west, Strathmore to the east and to the south. It can be accessed by calling 943-LINK (5465) or 1-866-408 -LINK (5465) toll free. Using simple interactive voice response with a limited number of choices - press 'T for health information or '2' for nurse advice - Health Link efficiently directs callers to the appropriate responder such as a nurse or an information and referral specialist. Calgary Health Link is an excellent example of primary health care in action, which will assist in improving access to health services, and enabling our residents to make informed decisions regarding their health and health care," said Lori Anderson, senior executive leader. "This service will assist our staff as they continue to provide excellent care." The service, which has operated in Calgary for six months, currently answers between 700 and 800 calls per day. It is part of a province-wide initiative to provide nurse advice and information to ail Alberta residents by June 2003. Service to the northern part of the province is provided through the Capital Health Authority in Edmonton. The two sites work in an integrated fashion to provide a single uniform service throughout the province. Dr. Roger Galbraith, medical director for the provincial service, said that sharing resources between regions provides maximum utilization of the service. Its wonderful that we're getting more and more ways of delivering health information on a consistent basis, said Galbraith. "It's all part of the growing trend where people are looking for more information about their health and are faced with a number of choices. I think it's really a wonderful opportunity that we can do this for the whole province." Health Link is not just about getting helpful health information over the telephone; it's about getting the right care from the right person at the right time. That's where staff nurse Linda Levesque comes into the picture. Levesque and her team of nurses and information staff are the roots of what really makes Health Link work so well. I love my job," said Levesque. "I think we help a lot of people make good choices or decisions regarding their health care. Many people want to take care of themselves at home, but they don't know how so that's where we come in." Although the call center is quiet during a recent visit, Levesque said that at times the job does ecome quite hectic. In an eight-hour shift, she answers between 35 to 42 calls and spends rouqhly 10 minutes with each patient. Working with patients over the phone as opposed to in person is definitely a challenge for the highly skilled staff. Since the conversation takes place over the phone, nurses must rely on careful questioning and listening for a description of symptoms. The nurses must know exactly what questions to ask to get the full picture of what's happening on the other end of the phone. Nurses also use computerized protocols to assist them in gathering the information and providing consistent advice. "I really try to be open-ended," Levesque said. "You have seconds to develop a rapport so you need to convey warmth, empathy, and concern for what they are experiencing even if it seems relatively minor." Health Link's nurses must have at least five years of experience in different fields of nursing, and demonstrate excellent communication skills. Newly hired staff participates in four full weeks of classroom training as well as supervised shifts with experienced nurses in the call center. Statistics show the most common reason people call Health Link is about a fever. Calls about infants, bowel problems and coughs are next on the list of concerns. Levesque says that every call is valid. "Not all calls are emergencies by any means but some definitely are," said Levesque. "We aren't here to necessarily reduce emergency department visits but we do hope we will increase the appropriateness of those visits.” The goal of the service is not to reach a diagnosis, but to assess the severity of the symptoms. The caller is then advised of the most appropriate plan of action for their illness. Since the service began in November 2002, 49 per cent of the calls answered were able to be dealt with at home. Only 11 per cent of the callers were sent to the emergency room and 39 per cent were advised to see a doctor. One of the reasons many people go into nursing in the first place is to interact with people. Working on a computer and answering phones is not exactly where one might picture a typical nurse to be working. "I definitely miss the interaction with people, but the phone can still be very satisfying," said Levesque. "We still have a lot of interaction with our colleagues so that's a real treat for sure." Levesque and her colleagues anxiously sit in front of their computers with their head sets on ready for action as the volume of calls start to rise as noon hour fast approaches. As each call comes in a smile appears upon her face as she helps and comforts yet another person in her daily routine as a Health Link nurse. XJPOOIVCnSJG SCHOOL EVENTXTS

M ay 14th Hawaiian Day - Don’t forget your hula skirts! M ay 29th Animal Day - Dress up like your favourite pet. June 19th Cool Dude Day - Remember your shades! Spring, Rainbows and the Internet Contributed by Colleen Deitz

The Internet is a great device for those of us who do not have the greatest of memories, and it is wonderful for us to find the reminders of the past. When I was a little girl growing up with my 4 sisters, after a rain and looking at the rainbow my grandmother would recite a poem to us that we all loved so much. As I got older I had been meaning to write this poem down however as always I thought I was to busy. Well as life goes, my poor grandmother suffered a stroke and was never able to remember the poem again. A couple of years later my grandmother passed away. With spring here and Mother's Day coming I always think of my grandmother, and we always think of the poem. So we got to looking on the Internet and we were lucky to find the poem. I thought it would be nice to share it with you.

The Rainbow Fairies Author Unknown

Two little clouds, one summer's day, Went flying though the sky; They went so fast they bumped their heads, And both began to cry.

Old Father Sun looked out and said: 'Oh, never mind, my dears, I'll send my little fairy folk To dry your falling tears.'

One fairy came in violet, And one wore indigo; In blue, green, yellow, orange, red, They made a pretty row.

They wiped the cloud-tears all away, And then from out the sky, Upon a line the sunbeams made, They hung their gowns to dry.
