Description Fasnadarach is a magnificent and exquisite country house. In Deeside and the Mearns, an illustrated architectural guide (The Rutland Press, 2001) Jane Geddes describes the house as an “elegant Voysey-like fishing lodge” and writes that a “complex entrance front of sweeping roofs and gables conceals the real purpose of the house: a superb sequence of rooms on two floors, virtually perched over the riverbank”. She continues that the “interior details are complete, including good Art Nouveau door furniture”. The house was built as the fishing lodge for the Estate. Category B listed, it was designed by George Truefitt and completed in 1874. Turefitt was responsible for many of the houses and buildings on the estate, including Glen Tanar House. Fasnadarach was commissioned by Sir William Cunliffe Brooks, father in law of the 11th Marquis of who had married Sir William’s elder daughter, Amy, in 1869. Sir William leased Glen Tanar from the Marquis for many years and bought it in 1890. He died in 1900, leaving the property to his grandson Lord Cecil. The current owners are believed to be only the third family to have lived at Fasnadarach.

It is an elegant and imposing house, with well proportioned reception rooms which are designed to make the most of the fabulous views up and down the River Dee and on to the hills beyond. It is a fabulous and dramatic setting. The house sits up above the river, on its south bank and is set back from the minor public road, and screened by its own grounds. As such it is a haven for wildlife, with salmon and otters being seen in the river, and squirrels in the garden. It is built of squared and snecked pink and grey granite, with finely finished margins, crow stepped gables, decorative overhanging eaves and a Rosemary tiled fishscale piended roof with decorative terracotta ridges.

Internally it retains many of its period features, including fine window display cupboards. Next door is the library which has a The boiler room has a Thermocon oil fired boiler and a cornicings and decorative Art Nouveau door furniture in all the picture rail, marble fireplace with mantel and overmantel where Camray Utility boiler with Honeywell controls linked to outside principal rooms, fireplaces, leaded and stained glass windows. the carving ties in with the door frames, together with a fitted temperature, a hatch to the oil tank room and doors to a wood/ bookcase and two wall lights.
