The aim of this study was to identify the blood parasites and parasitaemia in endemic and non-endemic Endemic passerine birds from central Mexico highlands. This study included 157 passerines representing 29 species from Bird 17 families. Overall, 30.6% (48/157) of the birds were infected with blood parasites. Of those, Haemoproteus spp. Mexico were found in 14.0% (n = 22), Leucocytozoon spp. 12.1% (n = 19) and microfilariae 0.6% (n = 1). Blood Haemoproteus Leucocytozoon parasites were found in 71.4% (5/7) of endemic bird species and 45.4% (10/22) of non-endemic species. -

Sus áreas de invernada son desconocidas. A pesar de que su estado es descrito como poco común a relativamente común, no hay localidades donde la especie sea vista regularmente o en números significativos. Históricamente, los registros han sido de colonias reproductivas de 15–30 aves o más; pero los registros acumulados por los autores a lo largo de las últimas dos décadas han sido en su mayoría de migrantes en las tierras bajas, sin registros reproductivos definitivos excepto por una colonia recientemente descubierta de solo 2–6 individuos en Sinaloa. Costa Rica: Birding and Nature│Species List January 13 – 20, 2018│Compiled by Bob Meinke With Pacific Coast Extension | January 20 – 24 Guides Willy Alfaro and Bob Meinke, with expert local lodge naturalists and 12 participants: Tom, Kristy, Julie, Charlie, Sheila, Pierre, Elisabeth, Beverly, Ellen, Judy, Kurt, and Lea Summary Surprisingly cooler than average weather offered pleasant temperatures during our travels (it was never hot), and despite the drizzle and occasional downpour (due to an unusual lingering into January of the Central American rainy season), we saw many species of birds, including rare and elusive taxa such as Chiriquí and Buff- fronted Quail-Doves (both local endemics), the recently described Zeledon’s Antbird, Spotted Wood-Quail, the aptly named Tiny Hawk, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, and the cryptic Scaled Antpitta. Stars among the 24 species of hummingbirds recorded on the trip were Black-crested Coquette, the unique Snowcap, and Volcano, Scintillant, and Fiery-throated Hummingbirds (the latter four species regional endemics). Among the visually more impressive birds we encountered were Great Green Macaw, Cinnamon Woodpecker, Collared Trogon, Jabiru, the endemic Golden-browed Chlorophonia, Emerald Tanager, and four species of Motmot. Unlike many birds that reside in North America, Neotropical species seem largely undaunted by mist and rain, and we had little trouble racking up impressive observations during the main trip, as well as on the Pacific coast extension. The combined list below summarizes main tour and Pacific coast post-tour extension sightings, covering species seen by all or at least some of the participants. Those observed only by the “extension group” (i.e., Elisabeth, Pierre, Lea, Judy, Sheila, and Charlie), including many shorebirds and waders not seen during the main tour, are differentiated below by RED text. -

ON THE SIERRA MADRE SPARROW, XENOSPIZA BAILEYI, OF MEXICO ROBERTW. DICKERMAN,ALLAN R. PHILLIPS, AND DWAIN W. WARNER THE SierraMadre or Bailey'sSparrow, Xenospiza baileyi, was described as a new genus and speciesfrom the high mountainsof Durango and Jaliscoless than 35 yearsago (O. Bangs,Proc. •VewEngland Zool. Cl., 12: 85-88, 1931). It has sincebeen consideredrare, and even 19 years ago, when F. A. Pitelka (Condor, 49: 199-203, 1947) describeda new subspecies,only 11 specimenswere known, of whichhe had at handonly 1 from La Cima, Distrito Federal, and 3 from westernMexico. Today the populationfrom the sacatonbunch grass areas of La Cima, in the pass betweenthe Valleyof Mexicoand Cuernavaca,is well representedby series in the collectionsof Phillips and the University of Minnesota Museum of Natural History. These seriesinclude specimens in all the plumage stagesfrom stubby-tailedjuveniles to worn adults and those having recently completedthe prebasicmolt. Other specimensare scattered through several museumsin the United States. The populationof Du- rangois now representedby additionalspecimens in the collectionof the Robert T. Moore Laboratoryof Zoology,Occidental College. Conserving Evolutionary Process in the Sky Islands of Northern Mexico
Conserving Evolutionary Process in the Sky Islands of Northern Mexico by John McCormack, Graduate Student, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Center for Tropical Research, Institute of the Environment, UCLA The mixed pine-oak woodlands of the Sierra Madre mountain chains in Mexico are a significant focus of biodiversity for North America. Harboring about a third of the world’s pine and oak species, this high- elevation region is a major center of endemism for birds, reptiles, and amphibians, including several endemic bird genera such as the thick-billed (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhncha) and maroon-fronted (R. terrisi) parrot and the Sierra Madre sparrow (Xenospiza baileyi). This area was recently selected by Conservation International as an important “hotspot” – a distinction it shares with the world’s other most “biologically rich and endangered ecoregions.” This double-edged distinction is exemplified by the imperial woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis), the world’s largest woodpecker, endemic to Madrean highlands and now likely extinct. A view of the Sierra del Carmen, a sky island in Coahuila, Mexico. Chihuahuan desert in the lowlands gives way to conifer forest at high elevations. Sky islands in Texas can be seen in the distance. As the Sierra Madres approach the United States border, their massive, interconnected cordillera give way to a series of broken mountain ranges that are isolated from one another by lowland desert. These “sky islands” rise serenely from the desert and provide a refuge for cool-adapted species and a migratory destination for birds and the humans who seek them out. Biologists have long been fascinated by sky islands for the same reason that oceanic islands have held their fancy since Darwin’s time: they provide a natural laboratory of replicated habitats for the study of evolution.
