ARAQUARI EXPERIMENTAL TESTING SITE

Call for Prediction!

Recent research in pile foundation carried out in the last 25 years supports theoretical based approaches to be used in geotechnical design. Despite that, scattered predictions are often observed, especially in sands.

For this reason, engineers from Indus try and University are invited to participate to a Class A Prediction Event, where their ability and skills in assessing the load -settlement response of an axially loaded pile will be checked and compared.

The pile is bored, drilled under bentonite suspens ion, 24.4m long and 1m diameter. It has been installed at the Experimental Testing Site (Santa Catarina, ), where an extensive site characterization has been carried out, comprising a variety of in -situ tests (piezocone, dilatometer, SPT, se ismic measurements).

Integrity and cross-hole tests have been performed after installation ; the axial load test will take place within the next two (2) months.

The Participants are challenged to predict the static load bearing behaviour of the bored pile, including load-displacement curve, shaft and base loads at failure and the distribution of axial load along the shaft at failure. All existing information concerning the experimental testing site (soil testing, pile details, instrumentation, integrit y testing, etc.) and the instruction for the Predictors are available in this website: http://www.ufrgs.br/araquari -ets/ . The predictions have to be sent by email to [email protected] before April 20, 2015. A summary of measured and predicted data will be presented (anonymously) in a special Section at SEFE 2015 ( VIII Seminário de Engenharia de Fundações Especiais e Geotec nia ). The Conference will be held in June 2015 (23 th to 25 th ) in São Paulo (Brazil) and, in that occasion, the best Predictor will be awarded.

Results will be made available to the Geotechnical Community at our website and publicized by ISSMGE.

Predictor s are invited to attend and disseminate this stimulating initiative!
