By JOSEFIN DOLSTEN JTA news service NEW YORK – On a recent Fri- day night, about 20 people gathered for Shabbat services at the Actors’ Temple, a synagogue just a few blocks from Times Square. Rabbi Jill Hausman greeted each one by name with a kiss on the cheek and a “Good Shabbos.” Some sang along and others listened as she led the small crowd in a service using a prayer book and a packet she had printed out just minutes earlier in her upstairs office. It’s a far cry from the era when some of the biggest celebrities in the country used to gather at the West 47th Street shul. The Three Stooges, actors Shelley Winters Photos by Josefin Dolsten and Aaron Chwatt (better known as The Actors’ Temple is located in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, just minutes from Times Square. Red Buttons), baseball stars Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg, and TV host Ed Sullivan all prayed there. Sullivan, whose wife was Jewish, also hosted the annual tem- ple benefit at The Majestic Theater. Headshots of stars who frequented the synagogue hang on a wall. The synagogue was founded in 1917 for a much different crowd: Orthodox shopkeepers who worked in Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood lined today with bars and restaurants catering to the pre- theater crowd but at the time was rife with gangs. The Jewish ex-major league outfielder, a one-time coach for Team Israel and one-time player for the Tampa Bay Rays, was named manager of the San Francisco Gi- ants on Nov. 5. Kapler, who has a Jewish-themed tattoo on each leg, was let go by the Philadelphia Phillies after two seasons in which his team failed to make the postseason despite high expectations. “In my personal experience in working with Gabe, there is no one who works harder and is more committed to getting the best out of the people around him,” Farhan Zaidi, the Giants’ president of baseball operations who worked with Kapler when both were with the Los Angeles Dodgers, said in a statement. “This was also echoed in the feedback we received around the baseball community.” Kapler follows Bruce Bochy, who retired after 13 seasons guid- ing the National League West club, led the Giants to three world championships. The team has not made the playoffs since 2016 and is considered to be in a rebuilding mode. Now about those tattoos: There’s a Jewish star on his left leg and an- other that reads “Never Again” – a reference to the Holocaust – on his right leg. The West Coast native will have some Jewish company in San Francisco: the team’s center fielder, Kevin Pillar, and CEO Larry Baer. Kapler coached the Israelis during the 2013 World Baseball Classic’s qualifying period and was invited to travel through Israel with the national team in 2017. He had never been to Is- rael before and called the visit an “extraordinary life experience,” adding that his trip to the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum there left him “emotional for several days after.” PAGE 10 A JEWISH PRESS of TAMPA NOVEMBER 15 - 30, 2019 USF scholars, Israelis, share research on aiding the elderly On a recent trip to Tel Aviv, Uni- versity of scholars met with their counterparts at the University of Tel Aviv, as well as two health technology companies, to explore two fields of research aimed at benefiting the elderly.
