Feeding people ...... people Feeding “ From the Front Lines of War to the Front Lines in the War on Hunger y name is Chris, and I am an Army veteran. MWhen I returned home, I was struggling with PTSD and depression, the Veterans’ Vocational Rehabilitation program helped me get a job with St. Mary’s. This place has changed my outlook in so many ways, because I know that what I’m doing is positively impacting the community. Here at St. Mary’s, my job is to greet the volunteers and carry out their orientation. It’s up to me to make sure each one feels welcome, and to ensure their safety. Ultimately, I want every volunteer to have a great experience. My favorite part about coming to work every day is engaging with these wonderful volunteers, because they really want to help out the community. They’re not getting paid to come here. They’re just doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. So many great people, and they’re making a great impact! There’s a huge need in our community — a lot of people going through a lot of difficult things. for our hungry neighbors. Without involvement from the volunteers and those who give support to St. Mary’s, we At St. Mary’s I feel like I have purpose again, and

wouldn’t be able to make as big of a difference I just want to give back.

ot long ago, I made some poor decisions that one student looking for housing and every member of Nleft me living in a halfway house, unsure our staff trying to help find him a place. This is so much where my life was headed. When I heard about more than a culinary program. There’s so much more the Community Kitchen program at St. Mary’s, going on than that. I decided to give it a try. I came here just as a way to get out of a halfway house, I’m so glad I did. It’s been life-changing. but it’s turned into so much more. When I saw what was going on here, I had some pretty big epiphanies and Community Kitchen (CK) is a life skills and food awakenings. service training program for people with barriers to employment. Students gain the skills to get good jobs, There were so many good things going on here that while our community’s poor and hungry neighbors get I wanted to be a part of it. So now I’m doing the best the food they need. I can to help this place that did good things for me and for others. When I graduated from the program, I could’ve searched for a job in food services. However, I decided to stay at St. Mary’s as a kitchen assistant, and now I help teach CK classes. My most important role is effectively communicating the mission and the lessons of CK to the students. Practically speaking, we help with lunch, with catering services, and with Kids Cafe,® feeding area school children. The most important thing for me is making sure the students learn something and have a good time while doing it. It’s super rewarding — helping to feed the community and working with the students. We’re like family. I remember
