Due to the severe threats that biodiversity encounters today natural history collections and the data they provide, have now a renewed interest. The collections of Nacional Museum of Lisbon were lost in a fire in 1978 with the loss of the type specimens collected from the centuries XVIII and XIX. Many of these collections still remain in the institutions to where they were sent making them the last remnants of the Lisbon musicological collections. Consulting the (AHMB) that survived the fire, has the objective of following the zoological scattering of the Lisbon Museum collections and their type specimens. This study has two main goals: 1) Contribute to its musiological valorization and with its data upgrading and increasing the biological information from poorly explored locations; 2) Provide a useful list of the musiological transferences from Museu Bocage and the possible type specimens that taxonomists and the rest of the scientific community can use to solve taxonomic problems that will have conservation implications. -

Bergmann Department of Biology, Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester, Massachusetts 01610, USA; E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Convergent evolution is a common pattern in nature, with many documented examples ranging from molecular and genomic scales to organismal and possibly to ecosystem scales. Although there are many documented examples of convergence, methods for formal testing of convergence are only recently being developed and studies of mechanism are less common still. Here, I construct a phylomorphospace of squamate reptile body shape and use it to test for convergence among clades and taxa that are thought to be under sim- ilar selective regimes. I test for convergence by examining the degree of overlap among convergent taxa in the phylomorphospace and by examining the direction of evolution along convergent phylogenetic branches by com- paring non-convergent ancestors and convergent descendants. I find strong evidence for convergence in body shape among taxa that have evolved elon- gation because of fossoriality or because of inhabiting complex environ- ments, gliding, and sand-dwelling. I find some evidence for body shape con- vergence in taxa that have evolved dry adhesion, but no evidence of conver- gence among herbivores or bipedal lizards. -

Chapter 13 The Reptiles of Angola: History, Diversity, Endemism and Hotspots William R. Branch, Pedro Vaz Pinto, Ninda Baptista, and Werner Conradie Abstract This review summarises the current status of our knowledge of Angolan reptile diversity, and places it into a historical context of understanding and growth. It is compared and contrasted with known diversity in adjacent regions to allow insight into taxonomic status and biogeographic patterns. Over 67% of Angolan reptiles were described by the end of the nineteenth century. Studies stagnated dur- ing the twentieth century but have increased in the last decade. At least 278 reptiles are currently known, but numerous new discoveries have been made during recent surveys, and many novelties await description. Although lizard and snake diversity is currently almost equal, most new discoveries occur in lizards, particularly geckos and lacertids. In the course of recent taxonomic studies in the African Agamidae the West African species were examined and new species have been identified. In this publication a new species of the genus Agama Daudin, 1802 is described from Cameroon and Gabon. Males of the new species differ from all other known Agama in the unique combination of the reticulate colouration of the throat and the blue tip of tail. It is compared with the other Cameroonian members of the genus and several other Agama species from Africa. Additionally, the status of Agama mehelyi Tornier, 1902, only known from its holotype, is discussed. Key words. World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 476rev.pdf UNESCO Region: Africa __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Chongoni Rock Art Area DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 16th July 2006 STATE PARTY: Malawi CRITERIA: C (iii)(vi) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Decisions of the 29th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (iii): The dense and extensive collection of rock art shelters reflects a remarkable persistence of cultural traditions over many centuries, connected to the role of rock art in women’s initiations, in rain making and in funeral rites, particularly in the Chewa agricultural society. Criterion (vi): The strong association between the rock art images and contemporary traditions of initiation and of the nyau secret society, and the extensive evidence for those traditions within the painted images over many centuries, together make the Chongoni landscape a powerful force in Chewa society and a significant place for the whole of southern Africa. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Situated within a cluster of forested granite hills and covering an area of 126.4 km2, high up the plateau of central Malawi, the area features the richest concentration of rock art in Central Africa on 127 sites. They reflect the comparatively scarce tradition of farmer rock art, as well as paintings by BaTwa hunter-gatherers who inhabited the area from the Late Stone Age. The Chewa agriculturalists, whose ancestors lived in the area from the late Iron Age, practised rock painting until well into the 20th century. The symbols in the rock art, which are strongly associated with women, still have cultural relevance amongst the Chewa, and the sites are actively associated with ceremonies and rituals.
