4 Get fit the Brazilian way...... with Capoeira

What is Capoeira (kæpɵ’ɛrə)? Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form incorporating martial arts, music and dance. It was developed in Brazil by slaves from Africa sometime after 1700C as a game where a circle or ‘roda’, is created of participants and in the centre of which two individuals would spar to music and song. How does Capoeira get you fit? The ‘play’ is made up of fluid movements of sweeps, kicks and acrobatics. The main aim of the game is to play with your partner, dodging kicks and performing your own acrobatic tricks within the circle. As you jump, twist, kick, and cartwheel around your opponent you will use muscles from all over your body giving you a full body workout session. Who can do it? Capoeira is designed for all ages and fitness levels from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. Each kick and movement is expertly taught by the teachers ‘Gringo’ (Fabio) and Cobra at Basingstoke Sports Centre. Is it fun? Capoeira is not just a sport for getting fit; it’s also a mini-community. The class of participants are more than just fellow ‘Capoeiristas’, they are friends too! It’s the mixture of ages, abilities and backgrounds which makes Capoeira so much fun whilst at the same time developing your strength, fitness, flexibility and even your musical talents! Even the most skilled Capoeiristas learn something new in every class and all members encourage and congratulate each other for their efforts. Do I get a belt? Each year the teachers organise a ‘Batizado’, which translates from Brazilian- Portuguese as ‘’baptism’’. During this event, the Master teachers from Brazil will visit the class to provide our group with special workshops. Following this there is a show for all your friends and family to come and watch. The show consists of performances by the teachers and students after which the Capoeiristas receive their new belt or ‘corda’. The corda is a reflection of their a little skills, effort and improvement over the year and the level of which is deemed fingerprint suitable by the teacher. caught forever in Want to get involved? solid silver Capoeira classes are available in Basingstoke and Reading. 5 BRAMLEY IRON MUM You wouldn’t have thought it from a North Hampshire rural village but there are some really tough women in the village of Bramley! Did you have a New Years resolution to get fit this year?, or did you realise as you pushed a pram or pulled a sledge through the snow that your fitness levels were less than alpine? Well following the great success of Bramley Iron Mum 2009 we are looking for the new Bramley Iron Mum 2010. Bramley Iron Mum is a fun triathlon aimed at any woman who can just about run for a bus. Free local training sessions start on the 29th March, with brisk walking and a gradual build up through the summer until regulars are running 5-6 km by competition day. The climax of all the ladies’ hard work was on a beautiful Saturday at the beginning of September last year. Denise Harding, a competitor last year, decided to write about her experience on the day. “I awake to my alarm @ 07:00hrs after a restless nights sleep. I first look out of my bedroom window. The sky is blue, the winds have calmed down, it’s going to be a beautiful day.. I enjoy an early breakfast to fire all the energy I know is going to be required today. As I am stood listening to the countdown for the start I can hear my heart pumping hard even before I take off. There is a little jostling as we settle down into our own race. I pass many marshals who are waving us on and ensuring we are safe. Who said there were NO HILLS hmmmm!!! As I reach the halfway marshal I grab a water and discard the cup for him to collect later, “thanks!”. I am starting to breath properly now, my over-stretched lungs are now receiving the fresh air they were complaining for. As I arrive back into the field hearing cheers and shouts of encouragement gives me another boost to go!!!” I'm on my bike with the wind whistling by. Now I am in heaven. Fully charged, driven by adrenalin I take the first circuit, looking forward to the next… the rumble of tyres on the tarmac. We all still take time to acknowledge each other, we may smile, or call out or just nod ‘cause we can not speak. We all know we are giving it everything!!!! I am back onto the field again… everyone cheering. I pick up and run with my boxes Whoops!!! Forgot to change my shoes! Whoops !!! Forgot to take off my helmet! I struggle to the finishing line with the very last piece of energy I have left… to finish in 6th place @ 1hr 6 mins…and I think maybe the eldest competitor”.

6 Well congratulations to Denise Harding and all the other competitors who took part in last year’s triathlon. Hopefully, you will have been inspired to take part in Bramley Iron Mum 2010 and join the evening training sessions from March 29th, outside the Clift Pavilion. Find out how you can get fit, make some great friends and maybe win the title of “Bramley Iron Mum 2010” by visiting the website, emailing or joining the Facebook group. Training Starts: 29th March 2010

Need something to dunk?

BRAMLEY VILLAGE BAKERY THE SNOW It came before all bets were laid and past its sell by date, it stayed, then after all the oohs and aahs shouts of frustration, abandoned cars, until authorities at last saw fit to spread the roads with salt and grit. And even then it wasn’t enough so young and old, all found it tough. Persistent snow kept sweeping through to take our minds off new swine flu, the news had nothing else to say so kept reporting through the day reporters clad in yellows and blues with nowt to do but repeat the news as Children loved ‘no school’, hooray, and snowmen joined them in their play. And Britain, as ever, came to a stop praying the thermometer didn’t drop, another degree below minus whatever hoping that sunshine would finally sever the freezing grip that had taken hold and bound us in its snowy cold with icy hands to freeze our bloods until the rain came with its floods.

The What’s on 4 Awards are run by local Bramley mum Sam Willoughby and she is looking forward to warmer weather as her business is hosting their 4th annual awards to recognise the best activities for children across the UK this June, and nominations are now underway. This year the awards continue to focus on the people behind the activities and community groups with awards to recognise the most outstanding community group volunteer, most outstanding activity leader and most outstanding children’s tutor. With 16 awards in total including several new ones; best after school or breakfast club, best uniformed group and best school holiday club, there is sure to be a category that those of you that are parents within Bramley can consider nominating. Bramley’s very own Active Tots have seen their success awarded for Best Soft Play Centre when they won in 2008. A parent who used Active Tots said “Active tots is the most beautiful soft play centre I've ever been to as it's in a converted barn in the middle of the countryside! It's also just for 0-4s so there is no worries about big kids running around and knocking over the very little ones! It's scrupulously clean at all times and has a great cafe with well thought out food for parents and children. There is also an area with good quality, well maintained toys. I think Active Tots must be completely unique in the UK!” Nominations, which opened in January is open until the end of February. All you need to do is log onto one of the websites; www.whatson4littleones.co.uk, www.whatson4schoolkids.co.uk or www.whatson4kidsparties.co.uk Voting for those nominated will run from March to the end of April 2010, with the winners of the awards announced on 27th June 2009 at the Baby Expo in Brighton, West Sussex and presented with their award certificate by Phil Gallagher from Cbeebies Mister Maker. Lets hope that a service used by the local residents of Bramley can scoop another victory, and remember everyone who BRAMLEY VILLAGE BAKERY nominates or votes has a chance to bring their family to the awards ceremony to meet Mister Use your loaf Maker in person! for more than just a leaky tap plumbing and heating 160212123456

Closing date: 1st March 2010. !! ! ! NO PURCHASE NECESSARY John Stubbs on Red Kites

A few years ago, sighting a Red Kite in Bramley would have been National news. We’d have journos and twitchers (they don’t like that name) round here – with some people saying it’s a hoax and some saying it’s all a conspiracy, as they do. The fact is, kites are here, and no less exciting than they ever have been. Common in medieval times, Shakespeare rather sniffily referring to 'a city of Kites and Crows', they were valuable scavengers before the days of rat-catchers and bin men – at one time you could be hanged for killing a kite. However, in 1566 the lawmakers came more to favour their lordships’ dovecotes and hatcheries, and passed a law offering a bounty of ‘one penney for the head of every Woodwall, Pye, Jaye, Raven or Kyte’. That would have been a silver penny, and probably half a day’s wage, so very worthwhile, and a parish such as Bramley could have been fined if we didn’t come up with our quota of heads. There followed a prolonged period of persecution, what with the advent of guns and egg collectors, so that by the end of the 19th C there was only a handful of breeding pairs left in the UK. Those few remaining, in mid Wales, were down to two or three pairs by 1902. Some local landowners, however, together with the early RSPB supporters began conservation, as it’s nowadays recognised, with this species. But towards the 1980s it was found numbers were hardly increasing, so kites were brought in from colonies in Sweden and Spain. The birds we see now are most likely from those released into the Chilterns over the past 20 years. The photograph of a Red Kite, shown here, was taken by Helen Olive of www.redkites.net, a onetime resident of Chineham, who’s now much involved with the breeding and welfare of the birds. Gill Baker from Bramley Green was so impressed with the sight of Red Kites quite often right near her home that she was prompted to contact redkites.net to find out more about them. They welcome such reports, as they had been tracking some of the birds by radio tags. While they’re not exactly common, it’s a pretty good bet now that if you take a quietish walk around one of Bramley’s many footpaths that pass near a copse or wood, away from the roads, you’ll see a Red Kite. They can be big – a wingspan of four or five feet, with the characteristic forked tail and a chestnut body, and white on the outer wing. The body is comparatively slight – hence its ability to soar and cruise with hardly any wing movement. Not to be confused with its heavier cousin, the buzzard, more thickset and with rounded wings and tail. Kites are mainly scavengers, but will also take small mammals and birds, and you may well see one carefully walking a field taking earthworms. Kites are of course listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and have full legal protection. It’s an offence to disturb nesting kites. They’re extremely sensitive to people close to a nesting area, and can abandon their nest and chicks at the slightest disturbance. As scavengers, they are vulnerable to ‘secondary’ poisoning from eating for instance poisoned rats or mice – another good reason never to use poisons. You’ll also hear them round the village – possibly without being able to see where they are – a high-pitched whistling, fee fee fee feeo feeweeo – one of their names is the whistling kite. Let’s hope they like Bramley, and that this time Red Kites have come to stay. Quality digital printing in Bramley 12 Campbell Court, Bramley, Tadley, Hampshire. 12 THE NEW FACES OF BRAMLEY Many residents of Bramley will already know about the new houses that have been built off German Road, and backing onto the Bramley Camp. The land was previously home to nine businesses housed in some industrial units, a farm and of course some of the land belonged to the Ministry of Defence and was used for training. Although not popular with many existing residents in the planning stages and then following issues during construction. The new faces of Bramley who purchased a house in the new development could certainly have been in for trouble with their attempt to fit in to Bramley. I am glad to say that my experience of Bramley to date has been great, the community atmosphere within the new development and also outside using the local amenities and meeting some of the residents. So what does adding 190 houses do to a village and who has moved in around the corner? I spoke to some of the new residents to find out what they thought of Bramley since they moved in, where they came from and what they might change if they had the chance. Many of the residents moved from reasonably close to the village, some from Reading, Fleet, Odiham and Wokingham. Whereas a few have moved from slightly further afield - Andover, Newbury, Essex and Scotland. Some downgraded from bigger houses to enjoy a change in work life balance whilst others took advantage of the slump in the housing market to jump up the ladder. What is clear though is that the sense of community was there from the start, strengthened by everyone’s primary experiences of the village. When visiting the site before buying people all mentioned having visited the one stop, the bakery as well as local pub’s such as the White Hart in Sherfield on Loddon. The great rural location combined with the great community vibe Bramley exudes meant people weren’t pondering their moves for too long. Some people described their motivation to be closer to work, and to be outside of Reading or Basingstoke but to be close enough that if they so wished they could venture in without too much hassle. Although when you find yourself sat at the level crossing waiting for two freight trains those transport links can become a little less great! Two new residents, Richard and Kevin (who works at the Bakery), have organised a series of get togethers on the Green, which forms a centre point of the new houses. These proved to be great opportunities for meeting neighbours for the very first time and building on the sense of community already present in the existing parts of Bramley. Families that have moved to Bramley have found their children have settled into school, scouts and brownies with ease. Other residents have also said about visiting the Bramley Inn for quiz nights, with one week seeing the teams from the Bramley Green development come first and second! So what would new residents change about Bramley if they could?. The overarching answer was very little and this probably matches with the thoughts of others in the village. The parking outside the one stop was mentioned, so too was a footbridge over the railway crossing, improved facilities for recycling within the village and road drainage. From personal experience and meeting others in the new development the general feeling is that Bramley is a jewel in the crown of North Hampshire villages and a lovely place to live. I am looking forward to promoting this through the magazine and hope the arrival of new faces to Bramley continue to enjoy their new beginnings in such a lovely community.
