CYMATÏIDAE in den Sammlungen des Musée Royal de F Afrique Centrale in Tervuren (Belgien) (Mollusca, Streptoneura, Gastropoda) von R. K ILIA S (Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, DDR) EINFÜHRUNG Die Verbreitung der meisten Arten der Cymatiidae (Tonnoidea, Streptoneura, Gastropoda) ist zwar in grossen Zügen bekannt, doch lassen sich die Grenzen der Verbreitungsgebiete nach dem heutigen Kenntnisstand teilweise nur ungenau festlegen. Auch innerhalb der bisher angenommenen Verbreitungsgebiete sind von weiten Strecken noch keine Funde nachgewiesen. Neben künftigen Neufunden sind es vor allem die noch nicht bearbeiteten Museums-sammlungen, di 2 durch ihre gespeicherten Funddaten unser heutiger Bild über Vor­ kommen und Verbreitung der Cymatiidae-Arten ergänzen können. In den Sammlungen des Musée Royal de lAfrique Centrale in Ter­ vuren befindet sich Material von Cymatiidae vorwiegend aus afri­ kanischen und einigen angrenzenden Meeresteilen, das in den letz­ ten fünf Jahrzehnten gesammelt oder erworben wurde. Es umfasst über 200 Gehäuse unterschiedlichen Erhaltungszustandes und zwei vollständige, in Alkohol konservierte Tiere. Leider sind zahlreiche Gehäuse ohne Embryonalwindungen, erheblich abgerieben oder auch beschädigt. — 698 — Die mir angetragene Bearbeitung dieses Materials habe ich gern übernommen, da in jedem Falle für verschiedene Arten neue Fund­ orte zu erwarten waren. Dank des freundlichen Entgegenkommens des Chef des Invertebrates im Mussum Tervuren, Prof. P.L.G. Benoit, dem ich vielmals danke, konnte das Material im Berliner Museum für Naturkunde bearbeitet und verglichen werden. Aufstellung der bearbeiteten Arten. Alle Gehäuse konnten determiniert werden. Die Arten werden in der systematischen Reihenfolge auf geführt. Zu den jeweiligen Arten werden nur die originären Synonyme genannt (neue Kombinationen und die Diagnosen der Arten s. Kilias, 1973). Dazu angegeben werden Verbreitung, Funddaten und Grössenangaben (Länge/Breite der Ge­ häuse in Millimetern). Die meisten Fundorte der zu 24 Arten bzw. Unterarten zu rechnen­ den Gehäuse liegen innerhalb der bisher bekannten Verbreitungs­ grenzen. Einige Fundorte erweitern jedoch die bisher durch Funde belegten Verbreitungsgebiete, vorausgesetzt, dass die vorliegenden Gehäuse nicht an die aufgeführten Fundorte verdriftet oder ver­ schleppt wurden. Auch die Grössen der vorliegenden Gehäuse ent­ sprechen den mehrfach publizierten Grössenverhältnissen der jewei­ ligen Arten. Subfamilia ARGOBUCCININAE kilias, 1973 Genus APOLLON Montfort, 1810 Apollon Montfort, 1810: 571 (spec. typ. Murex gyrinus Linnaeus; Orig.-Design.). Anmerkung. — Für die Gattung Apollon Montfort, 1810, wird in der Literatur vielfach der name Gyrinewn Link, 1807, verwendet, Rovereto hat 1899 als erster für Gyrinewn eine Typusart bestimmt (G . spinosum Dillw.), die zur heutigen Familie Bursidae gestellt wird. G. spinosum {— echinata Link, 1807) gehörte jedoch nicht zu den ursprünglich eingeschlossenen bei der Einführung des Gattungsna­ m e n s Gyrinewn durch Link, und Rovereto hat spinosum bei seine; Typusfestlegung nicht als identisch mit echinata erklärt (obwohl er es sicherlich so auffasste). Von mehreren Autoren wird daher die Typusfestlegung von Rovereto nicht anerkannt (z.B. Cernohorsky 1967 : — 699 — 322), sondern die von Dali (1904). Dieser hat Murex gyrinus L. ( a lle r ­ dings ebenfalls nicht exakt den Nomenklaturregeln entsprechend) als Typusart von Gyrineum Link, 1807, festgelegt. Bei Anerkennung von Gyrineum als gültigen Gattungsnamen für die Apollon-Arten würde Apollon zum objektiven Synonym von Gyrineum. Subgenus Apollon s. str. Gyrinella Dali, 1924: 89 (spec. typ. Anmerkung. — B e i Argobuccinum argus argus schieben sich durch die Gehäusefunde bei Landana und Banana die Verbreitunsgrenzen an der W estküste erheblich nach Norden (bis 5° 13’ s.Br.). Conids are well known for being active predators on worms, fishes, and even other snails. Cones are venomous gastropods, meaning that they use a sophisticated cocktail of hundreds of toxins, named conotoxins, to subdue their prey. Although this venom has been studied for decades, most of the effort has been focused on Indo-Pacific species. Thus far, Atlantic species have received little attention despite recent radiations have led to a hotspot of diversity in West Africa, with high levels of endemic species. In fact, the Atlantic Chelyconus ermineus is thought to represent an adaptation to piscivory independent from the Indo-Pacific species and is, therefore, key to understanding the basis of this diet specialization. We studied the transcriptomes of the venom gland of three individuals of C. ermineus. The venom repertoire of this species included more than 300 conotoxin precursors, which could be ascribed to 33 known and 22 new (unassigned) protein superfamilies, respectively. Most abundant superfamilies were T, W, O1, M, O2, and Z, accounting for 57% of all detected diversity.

ABSTRACTÐTonnoidean gastropods have planktotrophic larval lives of up to a year and are widely dispersed in ocean currents; the larvae maintain genetic exchange between adult populations. They therefore are expected to respond rapidly to new geographic barriers by either extinction or speciation. Fossil tonnoideans on the opposite coast of the Americas from their present-day range demonstrate that larval transport still was possible through Central America at the time of deposition of the fossils. Early Miocene occurrences of Cypraecassis tenuis (now eastern Paci®c) in the Caribbean probably indicate that constriction of the Central American seaway had commenced by Middle Miocene time. Pliocene larval transport through the seaway is demonstrated by Bursa rugosa (now eastern Paci®c) in Caribbean Miocene-latest Pliocene/Early Pleistocene rocks; Crossata ventricosa (eastern Paci®c) in late Pliocene rocks of Atlantic Panama; Distorsio clathrata (western Atlantic) in middle Pliocene rocks of Ecuador; Cymatium wiegmanni (eastern Paci®c) in middle Pliocene rocks of Atlantic Costa Rica; Sconsia sublaevigata (western Atlantic) in Pliocene rocks of Darien, Paci®c Panama; and Distorsio constricta (eastern Paci®c) in latest Pliocene-Early Pleistocene rocks of Atlantic Costa Rica. Continued Early or middle Pleistocene connections are demonstrated by Cymatium cingulatum (now Atlantic) in the Armuelles Formation of Paci®c Panama.

The following years have brought many changes; i.e., the family name is now Ranellidae, and distorsios are a separate family called Personidae. Therefore it was felt that a more up-to-date classification was needed as a guide for research and curatorial work. The classification herein presented is based on the examination of specimens in various museums and private collections, literature research, and exchange of information. No anatomical work was done. In the few cases where previously-used placement was changed, the entry is marked < *> indicating the decision was based on the author's unpublished research. New species were evaluated as they were published and added if they were considered to be valid. Those not accepted were placed in synonymy and also marked < *> . In a few cases where it was not possible to obtain specimens of newly-named species for examination and the available information did not seem adequate to make a definitive decision, the name was entered as a species and marked <**> indicating validity had not been verified. The format used is a listing of each subfamily, genus and subgenus, and species and subspecies, followed by synonyms in chronological order. Under each of these categories, the type is placed first followed in alphabetical order by the remainder of those that make up that specific group.

Y. Low Abstract. An annotated checklist of the Mollusca from the Australian Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is presented. The checklist combines data from all previous studies and new material collected during the recent Christmas Island Expeditions organised by the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (formerly the Raffles Museum of Biodiversty Resarch), Singapore. The checklist provides an overview of the diversity of the malacofauna occurring in the Cocos (Keeling) / Christmas Island ecoregion. A total of 1,178 species representing 165 families are documented, with 760 (in 130 families) and 757 (in 126 families) species recorded from Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, respectively. Forty-five species (or 3.8%) of these species are endemic to the Australian IOT. Fifty-seven molluscan records for this ecoregion are herein published for the first time. We also briefly discuss historical patterns of discovery and endemism in the malacofauna of the Australian IOT. Key words.     "; AN HISTORICAL AND SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE FROG-SHELLS AND TRITONS By WILLIAM HEALEY DALL Everyone who has looked upon the numerous " triumphs of Galatea," " births of Venus," and " processions of Neptune," in European picture galleries, scenes dwelt upon by mediaeval painters, has noticed the large, twisted, and variegated shells which are the invariable wind-instruments of the lusty Tritons who form the chorus " around the sea-born deities depicted. These shells, the " Buccina " of the ancients, became naturally in popular speech the Triton- " shells," and finally the " Tritons of the conchologist. Even at the present day on many an Italian hillside the sonorous note of these shells, blown by the peasants, serves to call the cattle home at dusk and they may even be heard occasionally on the alien farms of New England, in use for the same purpose, or as dinner horns. The elegant denticulation of the outer lip of these shells was copied in ages past by the silversmith, and the special conventional type of ornament thus derived has a name of its own, " gadrooning." Related to the Tritons is another group of shell-bearing mollusks, " variously known to eighteenth century conchologists as frogs (from their tubercular ornamentation) or "purses" (from their swollen oval form) and, since the development of a scientific nomen- clature, by the more attractive names of Ranella or Bursa. The history of the classification of these shells is very complex and has never been fully elucidated. The clearing up of some of the obscurity which has enveloped them and the proposal of a more modern and accurate system of classification for the two groups, is the object of this paper; in which the author has availed himself of the labors of many worthy predecessors, and, it is hoped, has made some advance on their conclusions.
