Palabras clave: Terrence Malick; Martin Heidegger; Cristianismo; Mundo; Espectador; Conversión [en] The Conversion of Terrence Malick: A Worldview Translated into the Film Medium Abstract. The fact that American filmmaker Terrence Malick devoted some years of his life to academ- ic philosophy and translated into English Martin Heiddegger’s The Essence of Reasons is understood by some authors as an interpretive key to his body of work.

  • A French Impressionist Critical Approach to Terrence Malick's
Life in Movement: A French Impressionist Critical Approach to Terrence Malick’s Films By Matthew Sellers Johnson A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree Master of Arts in Film Victoria University of Wellington 2021 i ii Abstract Terrence Malick’s films from Badlands (1973) to The Tree of Life (2011) have generally received critical praise, as well as being the focus of detailed scholarly work. By contrast, his more recent films, what Robert Sinnerbrink refers to as the “Weightless trilogy” with To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015) and Song to Song (2017), have been widely criticised and have been largely neglected academically. This thesis endeavours to situate the aesthetic features of these three films within a conceptual framework based in French Impressionist film theory and criticism. I will argue the ways in which these three films use natural light, gestures, close- ups, kinetic images and complex editing in relation to Germaine Dulac’s notions of pure cinema and Jean Epstein’s concept of photogénie. Moreover, these ideas can also be applied to films such as Days of Heaven (1978), The Thin Red Line (1998) and The Tree of Life. Thus, it is my contention that despite the significant changes to his filmmaking style evident in the Weightless trilogy, he remains a highly poetic director interested in the interior lives of his characters and the rhythms of life. iii Acknowledgements The following thesis would not be possible without the academic and personal support of the following people. First and foremost, I would like to thank Dr.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE TERRENCE MALICK RETROSPECTIVE Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick includes all of his features, some alternate versions, and a preview screening of his new film A Hidden Life November 15–December 8, 2019 Astoria, New York, November 12, 2019—In celebration of Terrence Malick’s new film, the deeply spiritual, achingly ethical, and politically resonant A Hidden Life, Museum of the Moving Image presents the comprehensive retrospective Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick, from November 15 through December 8. The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards.

A “vast and visually overwhelming nature documentary” (The New Yorker) that was 30 years in the making, Voyage of Time is both a stunning visual fantasia and science documentary, capturing and envisioning the life cycle of the universe. It is an expansion of the “birth of the universe” segment from Malick’s acclaimed 2011 film The Tree of Life. The cosmic visual theme is accompanied by some of the most transcendental music in the Western canon—Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Haydn’s The Creation, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”), and Poulenc’s Gloria. The live orchestra and chorus, with a narration by actor Lily James, will deliver their full sonic impact. In Terrence Malick’s film career, which spans almost half a century, he has made many acclaimed and groundbreaking movies including: Badlands (1973), winner of the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Director; Days of Heaven (1978); The Thin Red Line (1998), Oscar- nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay; The New World (2005); The Tree of Life (2011), Oscar-nominated for Best Director and winner of the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival; To the Wonder (2012), King of Cups (2015); Voyage of Time (2016); and Song to Song (2017).

  • Terrence Malick's Emersonian Cinema
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Bill Fech for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on May 31, 2013 Title: The Soul Announces Itself: Terrence Malick’s Emersonian Cinema Abstract approved: Jon R. Lewis This thesis takes an auteurist approach to the films of director Terrence Malick by reading them through the spiritual philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I establish Malick’s thematic concern with the human struggle to achieve better existences in a broken material world, a concern buoyed by his signature aesthetic that includes expressive voice-overs and sublime photography of nature. I close- read each of Malick’s six films, drawing upon tenants of Emersonian philosophy to reveal Malick’s expression of transcendent events of the soul against brutal earthly realities. In chapter one I put forth Badlands and Days of Heaven as Emersonian “cautionary tales” for lives lived bereft of meaningful communion with the world. Chapter two sees The Thin Red Line as Malick’s turn toward an explicitly philosophical cinema where the spiritual/material divide becomes paramount. In chapter three I focus on The New World and The Tree of Life as refined versions of Malick’s renewed philosophical interests and style. I conclude on Malick’s latest film, To the Wonder, finding that despite his depictions of an increasingly fractured modern world, Malick retains an Emersonian faith in the individual’s ability to spiritually transcend material life. ©Copyright by Bill Fech May 31, 2013 All Rights Reserved The Soul Announces Itself: Terrence Malick’s Emersonian Cinema by Bill Fech A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Presented May 31, 2013 Commencement June 2013 Master of Arts thesis of Bill Fech presented on May 31, 2013.

Terrence Malick Beyond Nature and Grace: Song to Song and the Experience of Forgiveness Abstract In The Tree of Life Terrence Malick poses the question of the relation between the order of grace and the order of nature in the cosmos and in human existence, a question presented through the relation of mother and father in the O'Brien family. The aim of this article is to analyze this issue and to present the role of glory in The rT ee of Life as the transfiguration of nature operated by grace. Specifically, the example of forgiveness as one strand of this glory seems to be an helpful tool to understand the movie. Forgiveness, already present in The rT ee of Life, becomes particularly important then in Song to Song. I will present this movie as an exemplar analysis of the human soul and of the capacity of forgiveness to draw the soul close to the eternal, as already happening in The rT ee of Life.

  • Calhoun Ascent of Eros in Malick Gettysburg
The Ascent of Eros in Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder David H. Calhoun, Philosophy, Gonzaga University The Thought of Terrence Malick, Gettysburg College Philosophy and Film Seminar Critics and commentators have noted that Terrence Malick’s characters are presented enigmatically enough to stand as archetypes. While Malick develops his characters with sufficient concrete detail that they are not bare universals, they serve in their concreteness as representations of competing outlooks or interpretive stances on human life. In The Thin Red Line (1998), for example, paired sets of characters—Tall and Staros, Witt and Welsh—represent respectively a hard, pragmatic, closedness and an ethical, aesthetic, and spiritual openness to “shining glory” outside of the self. Malick does not merely present the competing outlook between closedness and openness, however; his narrative, by exhibiting the consequences of these interpretive stances, makes a case for the superiority of one outlook over the other. In constructing his films in this way, Malick’s offers what amounts to arguments in favor of interpretive stances toward the world. Malick’s most recent film, To the Wonder (2012), takes this approach to the question of human love, specifically in its erotic / romantic form. Taking cues from Aristophanes’ tragic myth of the divided selves and the ladder of love in Plato’s Symposium, Kierkegaard’s analysis of the interpersonal and theological dimensions of love, and the “songs of ascent” in the Psalms, Malick explores a range of human stances toward eros, especially with respect to the role that eros and erotic relations play in human meaning and happiness.
