Nicholas Collon, Conductor "Dazzling opulence: Nicholas Collon led his orchestra with consummate skill" -The Guardian Founder and Principal Conductor, Aurora Orchestra (London, UK) Principal Conductor, Residentie Orchestra (The Hague, Netherlands) Nicholas Collon brings something fresh to all he does: as Co-Principal Conductor of the Holland's Residentie Orchestra, as a regular guest with the CBSO and many of the leading UK and European orchestras, and as the charismatic Principal Conductor of the Aurora Orchestra with their widely-acclaimed Warner Classics recordings and their BBC Proms appearances playing-from-memory stunning performances of the Mozart G Minor, Beethoven Fifth and Sixth Symphonies. He was also recently named Principal Guest Conductor at Gürzenich- Orchester in Cologne, Germany (2017). His skill as a communicator and innovator has been recognized by both critics and audiences alike – he was the recipient of the 2012 Critics’ Circle Award for Exceptional Young Talent – and he is known as an imaginative programmer encompassing an exceptionally wide range of music. In addition to winning the Echo Klassik (Classical without Borders) award for the recording ‘Roadtrip’ featuring music by John Adams, Copland, Ives, and Nico Muhly on Warner Classics, Nicholas Collon has made numerous recordings with England's Aurora Orchestra, Halle Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group on Warner Classics and other labels. In demand as a guest conductor, highlights include the Philharmonia, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Wales, and Hallé Orchestra; orchestras in Zurich, Berlin, Toulouse, Lyon, Bamberg, and Warsaw along with the London Sinfonietta and Ensemble Intercontemporain. He has collaborated with artists such as Ian Bostridge, James Ehnes, Evelyn Glennie, Steven Isserlis, Angelika Kirchschlager, Pekka Kuusisto, and Alisa Weilerstein. We look forward to introducing his "elegant and expressive technique" (ArtsDesk, Proms 2015) to North America! Anderson would be able to revisit the communal expressive ideal of several recent works for unaccompanied choir in the context of his by now well-established orchestral style, with its characteristic integration of lyrical simplicity and joyous complexity. The solo female voice, meanwhile, suggested a new and often dramatic presence – an individual consciousness at the heart of one of Anderson’s typical evocations of the natural world. Clearly, the choice of texts would be a central decision. Anderson had set poems by Emily Dickinson before, and now found in her visionary eccentricity a compelling expression of nature’s abundance as a kind of secular miracle.

The music stems from the pens of two contrarian composers: a contemporary Dane writing for an English instrumental ensemble and a Danish vocal group that is both Danish and English, and the aforementioned Englishman whose most famous SoNG – Lacrimae – was most likely composed in Denmark. We find ourselves therefore in very mixed company, with all the many pleasant undertones that such a phrase can evoke, in which the SoUNDs of Dowland’s tears TURN about, first setting the mood and then changing it.
