What We Must\" (Ninja Tune/Pias). 100 YEARS OF RECORDED SOUND INSIDE THE ARCTIC CIRCLE: Music Collections at the National Library of Norway, Rana Division Trond Valberg (Senior Archivist, National Library of Norway)* The National Library of Norway, Rana Division (hereafter NB Rana), was founded in 1989 when Parliament passed its latest Legal Deposit Act. The decision to choose a location 1,000 km north of the capital was a political one. In connection with the establishment of NB Rana it was decided to build a huge storage vault blasted into the mountain. The constant rock temperature of 9°C during every season makes it suitable for long-term storage of different kinds of material. There are 42,000 metres of shelves on four floors, and we have already prepared for another storage vault. The mountain vaults can resist all conventional bombs. To some extent it is important to know the origin of our institution to understand the development of the collections and associated activities. In addition to its state-of-the art storage facilities, much focus has been made on building a good technical infrastructure. We have a fully- equipped conservation laboratory and a recording studio that can handle most analogue and digital formats. Our digital mass storage system became fully operational in 2001, serving both legal deposit documents and historical material. On the subject of finance, though, I have to add that due to our budget we have barely spent any money on buying records or CDs. Since NB Rana is not open to the general public, our services can only be accessed online or by contacting the staff by phone or in other ways.

This jazz dialect was developed in the decade following the Nazi occupation of Norway, when Norwegians utilized jazz as a subtle tool of resistance to Nazi cultural policies. This dialect was further enriched through the Scandinavian residencies of African American free jazz pioneers Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and George Russell, who tutored Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek is credited with codifying the “Nordic sound” in the 1960s and ‘70s through his improvisations on numerous albums released on the ECM label. Throughout this document I will define, describe, and contextualize this sound concept. Today, the Nordic sound is embraced by Norwegian musicians and cultural institutions alike, and has come to form a significant component of modern Norwegian artistic identity. This document explores these dynamics and how they all contribute to a Norwegian jazz scene that continues to grow and flourish, expressing this jazz identity in a world marked by increasing globalization.

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.

For the award-winning Norwegian jazz quartet Pixel, the urgency of their music allows for no such hesitation. The band is in the vanguard of a jazz scene brimming with exceptional young musicians, charting an exhilarating, improvisation-steeped path infused with the cathartic energy of rock. This is an exciting time in jazz’s evolution, as it expands to embrace other popular musics worldwide. Pixel stands out in this phenomenon, as no one else is melding jazz with the song structure and accessibility of pop and indie rock as they do. Pixel’s third album Golden Years captures the next step in the band’s own rapid evolution, following their 2014 breakthrough We Are All Small Pixels and 2012’s impressive debut Reminder (all on Cuneiform). Pixel consists of double bassist and vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang, drummer Jon Audun Baar, trumpeter Jonas Kilmork Vemøy, and saxophonist Harald Lassen (with everyone contributing vocals). Pixel tends toward translucent textures, tight orchestration and pop-inflected songcraft.
