ARTI FACT LONG GONE REMINDER IN THE REVERED TRADITION OF NEIGHBORHOOD BALLPARKS, PITTSBURGH’S FORBES FIELD WAS ONE OF THE GREATS. Built in 1909, it was among the first made of concrete and steel, signaling the end of the old wooden stadiums. In a city known for its work ethic, Forbes Field bespoke a serious approach to leisure. The exterior was elaborate, the outfield vast. A review of the time stated, “For architectural beauty, imposing size, solid construction, and public comfort and convenience, it has not its superior in the world.” THE STADIUM WAS HOME TO THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES FROM 1909 TO 1970. In the sum- mer of 1921, it was the site of the first radio broadcast of a major league game. It was here that Babe Ruth hit his final home run. In later decades, a new generation of fans thrilled to the heroics of Roberto Clemente and his mates; Forbes was the scene of one of the game’s immortal moments, when the Pirates’ Bill Mazeroski hit a home run to win the thrilling 1960 World Series in game seven against the hated Yankees. The University of Pittsburgh’s towering Cathedral of Learning served as an observation deck for fans on the outside (pictured). AT THE DAWN OF THE 1970S, SEISMIC CHANGES IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY WERE UNDERWAY, and Pittsburgh faced an uncertain future. Almost as a ritual goodbye to the past, Forbes Field was demolished, replaced with a high tech arena with Astroturf at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers. ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds Located on the winding banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, the Great American Ball Park is home to the Cincinnati Reds, baseball's first professional franchise. The ballpark, built next door to the Reds’ former home, Riverfront Stadium, officially opened for the 2003 season. Equally as enthusiastic as their hometown fans, the ballpark’s management team continues to improve the ballpark’s energy performance and is a leader among stadiums nationwide. Energy Management with ENERGY STAR The Cincinnati Reds were one of the first Major League Baseball teams to join ENERGY STAR as a partner in 2008 and use ENERGY STAR resources to track energy usage, improve energy performance, and communicate their efforts to staff and the public. Improving energy performance is an important environmental strategy for the Reds and they have received kudos from local officials and enhanced loyalty from fans for leading by example. The ballpark operations management team benchmarks the ballpark’s energy performance using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Portfolio Manager, an online energy tool to track whole-building energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions. By inputting historical energy data going back to 2007, and ongoing monthly energy consumption and cost information, the Reds are able to measure progress and quantify improvements. To date, the ballpark’s energy intensity is 27 percent better than the national average for entertainment buildings1, even with an off-season construction project during the winter of 2009. As part of their energy management plan, the ballpark’s building operations management team implemented several energy conservation measures and integrated energy efficient technologies into the ballpark’s infrastructure.

Bryant, taken by the Cubs as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 Draft after the Astros passed on him with the top pick, clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth inning to back seven scoreless from Jon Lester to send the Cubs to a 2-0 win over the Astros, lowering Chicago's magic number to 7. "It still feels like we're just right in the middle of the season, but we feel like we're getting to baseball that actually really matters," Bryant said. "Anything can happen in the full season, so you've got to get there first, and we certainly feel like we're playing really good baseball right now." The Astros have lost three in a row and remain 2 1/2 games back in the race for the second American League Wild Card spot behind both the Orioles and Tigers, who drew even on Friday with Detroit's 4-3 win over Baltimore. "We did have some chances," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "Lester's a good pitcher and he has a way of finding himself out of these jams.
