Mulvihill MA in Book Publishing Thesis Spring 2017 Mulvihill 2 Abstract Though many of us have heard the mantra that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, marketers in book publishing bank on the fact that people do and will continue to buy and read books based not only on content, but its aesthetic appeal. This essay will examine the top four marketing trends that can be observed on the Amazon listings for books published on animal rights within the last ten years, specifically relating to titles, cover design, and the intended audience. From graphic adaptations of animals to traditional textbook approaches and animal photography, publishers are striving to evoke interest and investment in literature concerning a politically charged and inherently personal topic. -

Fischer Marketing and Consumer Behaviour Group, Wageningen University, Hollandseweg 1, 6706 KN Wageningen, The Netherlands; arnout.fi[email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 8 May 2020; Accepted: 11 June 2020; Published: 13 June 2020 Abstract: More and more consumers, at least in Western developed countries, are attentive to the sustainability aspects of their food, one of which concerns animal welfare. The conflict of harming an animal for the joy of eating meat causes a moral dilemma, affecting consumers’ reactions to, and choices of, animal-friendly products. This systematic review identified 86 studies from Scopus and Web of Science. The review outlines: (1) What are the personal antecedents among consumers regarding moral conflicts?; (2) In what situation do moral conflicts occur in consumer food choice?; (3) How do consumers emotionally experience the moral dilemma?; (4) How do consumers resolve moral conflicts over animal products? Researchers have studied personal factors and situational factors that arouse consumers’ moral dilemma and how the dilemma is solved, during which emotions and dissonance come into play. When synthesizing these findings into a comprehensive model, we notice that the current research is lacking on how personal factors change and interact with situations, which limits the understanding of the real-life context of consumers’ moral dilemma as well as their choices of animal-friendly products. More in-depth studies are needed to find situational factors that contribute to this complex psychological process. A commitment to animal rights and related notions of animal protection is often thought to entail a plant-based diet, but recent philosophical work challenges this view by arguing that, even if animals warrant a high degree of moral standing, we are permitted - or even obliged - to eat meat. Andy Lamey provides critical analysis of past and present dialogues surrounding animal rights, discussing topics including plant agriculture, animal cognition, and in vitro meat. He documents the trend toward a new kind of omnivorism that justifies meat-eating within a framework of animal protection, and evaluates for the first time which forms of this new omnivorism can be ethically justified, providing crucial guidance for philosophers as well as researchers in culture and agriculture. The essay analyzes the ideologies and stances behind marketing materials that often contain images of Latinas/os as laborers, and white (European origin) population as consumers, and examines how U.S.-based ethical capitalism operates as a neoliberal form of social regulation to champion personal responsibility and individual freedom, in often hidden and inferentially racist and classist ways. -

This study of the ethics involved in what we choose to eat using Ronald Sandler’s Food Ethics: The Basics consists of 5 modules. Each module contains two sections. The first section presents a set of Reading and Reflection questions that are to be completed before each meeting and are meant to help the participant wrestle with the concepts introduced in that week’s chapters. The second section consists of two (or more) Discussion questions, which will be written by the participants and the leader as they read. Both sets of questions are meant to foster discussion, but your group should by no means limit itself to the questions contained in these sections. -

Questions for Individual/Group Reflection 1) In what ways is my relationship with food part of my spiritual practice? 2) What was the environmental cost of getting my most recent meal to my table (production, distribution, and purchase)? e.g. What is my food footprint? See www.nature.org/initiatives/climatechange/calculator. 3) Where should I look in our community for the most sustainable, humane food. Do I consider seasonal availability when making a food choice? Can I get this product through a fair trade co-op, farmers’ market, or local producer or retailer? 4) How do my food choices impact those who produce and distribute it? What are their working and living conditions? Was land that previously was used to raise food for indigenous people converted to raising food for Western countries? 5) Do I consider packaging when making purchases and choose that with the least environmental impact? 6) What support do I need to move toward a more just, environmentally friendly diet? Individual Actions Compile a collection of recipes using compassionate and sustainable foods. Make copies easily available to the congregation Encourage local restaurants to offer sustainable and/or animal friendly choices. Thank them. If you are concerned about animal welfare, call ahead to the chef regarding menu options. Have available at your congregation a list of restaurants that offer sustainable/animal friendly choices. Visit restaurants of different cultural and ethnic traditions. Choose whole foods. With little or no processing, whole foods are as close as possible to their natural state. Most if not all of their original nutrients and fiber are retained. -
