WELCOME TO BASE CAMP PLUS!!

We hope that by the time you read this you will have had a smooth arrival to your camping pitch, that the weather is agreeable, and that you are looking forward to some live music & comedy! Our intent with Base Camp Plus was always to design an event that you can feel safe at, that we are comfortable putting on, but also one where you can party (should you want to!). Base Camp Plus has always been sold as socially distanced – an event that would fit within Step 3 restrictions. At certain times over the last 4 months this strategy has gone from seeming sensible, to seeming too conservative, to seeming still too risky, and everything in-between and back again… but with the recent increases in the daily COVID case numbers the balance seems about right. We have some information regarding specific COVID mitigations – these are contained in an additional sheet that accompanies this programme. For everyone’s safety we expect our guests to abide by these points. Please read carefully and understand that they may be subject to revision over the weekend. We are excited to be seeing you all again after what we have all been through. We hope this weekend in Baldersby Park will lodge firmly in your collective memories and be remembered as marking the beginning of the end of this awful period. Oliver, Kate and team xxx

Hop onto The Baghdaddies’ magic carpet for an amazing musical trip from Newcastle to Eastern Europe and the rest of the world! The Baghdaddies have been astounding audiences across Europe for over 20 years, on stages far and wide, on the streets, in village halls, and, of course, at festivals. The music appeals to everyone with a pulse, with their eclectic fusion of Balkan Roma and brass band music played at breakneck speed. Throw into the mix a little punk, jazz, reggae and ska and you have one of the most danceable bands on this or any other planet. Don’t miss The Baghdaddies’ arena walkabout performance from 1.30–2pm and their Acorn Stage set. 2 FRIDAY MUSIC

MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY 6.40–7.30pm ACORN STAGE, FRIDAY 9–9.45pm; WILDERWILD, FRIDAY 11–11.45pm DEEP TAN NIKI STEVENS “We absolutely want to be different – the weirder the better,” said Wafah Dufour, the singer and guitarist of Deep Singer-songwriter Niki Stevens’ music fuses powerful Tan, East ’s newest post-punk trio, to Loud & Quiet. gospel vocals with sharp lyrics and flavours. THE LOUNGE SOCIETY Legend has it that Deer Shed was the first ever festival attended by Archie Dewis, the drummer of Yorkshire’s most exciting new post-punk band, The Lounge Society. Now, Cameron and his bandmates will be playing the Main Stage at Base Camp Plus. How cool is that? This time last year, The Lounge Society were preparing to release their debut single, ‘Generation Game’, a politically charged modern polemic produced by the rather iconic Dan Carey and released on his label, Speedy Wunderground. If you’re not familiar with Dan’s work, well, you are, because he’s worked on records for the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, Kae Tempest, Boxed In, Warmduscher, Black Midi, Squid, Fontaines D.C. and loads more. The Lounge Society’s debut EP, Silk for the Starving, was released on 18 June 2021 to rave reviews, and we reckon this could be a favourite new band for many Deer Shedders. 3 FRIDAY MUSIC

MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY 9.45–10.55pm PORRIDGE RADIO Beginning as Dana Margolin’s sadcore bedroom project, Porridge Radio developed into an idiosyncratic post-punk four-piece after she moved to , who knot together Margolin’s furious emotional outpourings with beautiful pop melodies. ACORN STAGE, SATURDAY 6.10–6.40pm SIMON HIGDON Simon Higdon has been a regular Deer Shed attendee for years and recently sent us a link to his debut album, A Contribution to the Arts, which was released in April 2017. Simon’s songwriting is witty and emotional in equal measures and we absolutely loved the album. Accordingly, we asked Simon if he fancied a slot on the Acorn Stage, and he agreed! His new album is due for release in the near future and it’ll be a joy to hear songs both old and new during his first time on the other side of the barrier at Deer Shed.

MAIN STAGE, SATURDAY 6.40–7.30pm BIG JOANIE Big Joanie is a London-based three-piece formed in the summer of 2013, and another band we had booked in for Deer Shed 11. Consisting of members Stephanie Phillips, ACORN STAGE, SATURDAY 7.30–8pm Estella Adeyeri and Chardine Taylor-Stone, they are self- BEFORE described as a “black feminist punk band” with a sound like The Ronettes’ filtered through ‘80s DIY and ‘90s . MAIN STAGE, SATURDAY 8–9pm W. H. LUNG The sparkling synth pop and motoric of - based three-piece W. H. Lung first burst onto the music scene in 2017, with the release of the single ‘Inspiration! / Nothing Is’. Originally conceived as a studio-based project by school friends Joseph E (vocals, synths), Tom S (guitar), and Tom P (bass), the trio quickly became sought after for live shows and performances off the back of their 2017 debut. Drawing their inspiration from the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads, Prince, and Julia Holter, the three-piece returned to the studio to start work on their debut album. Distilling their influences into the album, the resulting Incidental Music was released to critical acclaim in early 2019. Their next album, Vanities, is due out on 3rd September and if ‘Pearl in the Palm’, the first single taken from it, is anything to go by, it is going to be an instant classic.

ACORN STAGE, SATURDAY 9–9.45pm; WILDERWILD, SATURDAY 11–11.45pm SERIOUS SAM BARRETT There are some artists we just can’t get enough of. Over eleven years, our old friend Serious Sam Barrett has performed in Baldersby Park a grand total of five times – including at Deer Shed 1 and last year’s Base Camp event. Sam is a hard-working, hard-touring, folk and country singer/songwriter from Otley in West Yorkshire who plays honest, heartfelt, self-penned and traditional songs on his 12-string guitar and banjo. He is a songsmith of supreme ability who never fails to draw a crowd at the festival! Don’t miss Serious Sam Barret’s fireside session in the Wilderwild.

6 SATURDAY MUSIC

MAIN STAGE, SATURDAY 9.45–10.55pm DREAM WIFE The first thing to say about Dream Wife is they write indie hits that compel anyone in earshot to lose it dancing or chanting “Dream Wife for life” at the top of their voice. Bashing out staccato guitar riffs and anthemic lyrics that shred and buzz like Gossip or Le Tigre at their peak, it’s little wonder their riotous, self-titled debut album in 2018 and 2020’s follow up, So When You Gonna…, were both universally adored by fans and critics alike. The second thing is that the Icelandic-Brightonian trio, comprised of Rakel Mjoll, Alice Go and Bella Popadec, are exactly the type of band you’d want your kids looking up to. Though we never ask artists to censor their material, at Deer Shed 9, vocalist Rakel changed one of their spicier lyrics, from the tune ‘F.U.U’, to “Eye spy with my little eye bad witches”, before taking time out after their set to meet their adoring young fans. Considering the amazing response Dream Wife received from Deer Shedders back then, this is going to be a special Saturday night headline show. 7 SUNDAY MUSIC

MAIN STAGE, SUNDAY 12.55–1.45pm; ACORN STAGE, SUNDAY 6.10–6.40pm THE BURNER BAND The Burner Band bridge the gap between bluegrass, rock n roll and punk to create their own unique sound. After two solo albums, vocalist and guitarist Lewis collaborated with double bassist Ian to forge a collection of songs which range in subject matter to cover mental health, murder and ’s campaign to rid the city of The Sun newspaper. MAIN STAGE, SUNDAY 2–2.50pm; WILDERWILD, SUNDAY 11–11.45pm RUM BUFFALO Mingling many genres, Rum Buffalo infiltrate swing and moody blues with fantastic synth hooks and epic horn lines. Since their formation, their jet-powered live show has stormed the UK live music scene, performing to 10,000 on the Truth stage at Glastonbury as well as many other festivals. The eight-piece band’s unique performances border on the surreal, with a three-piece horn section, vaudevillian costume, and a fire performance, all brought together by flamboyant singer, guitarist, and front-man, Jake Stevens. Their powerful sound features a unity of purpose which is impossible to resist. Don’t miss Rum Buffalo’s fireside session in the Wilderwild at 11pm. 8 SUNDAY MUSIC

MAIN STAGE, SUNDAY 6.40–7.30pm BULL This life-affirming band just make us smile endlessly. The five-piece outfit – consisting of members Daisy, Alex, Morgan, Olly and Jonny – have brought their heartfelt and homegrown sound to the masses, playing to packed out crowds in Leeds, Manchester, and Hull. Alongside airplay on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Introducing, the band has seen major success within a limited time frame. Talk More’s four latest singles were all debuted weeks apart on Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 show, and the band were also recently invited to play BBC’s Big Weekend, such is the sheer momentum the band are gaining. Their sound is dreamy, soulful, and atmospheric, leaving listeners allured by their raw emotion.

9 SUNDAY MUSIC

ACORN STAGE, SUNDAY 9–9.45pm EVE OWEN Sometimes, when we go to check out an artist’s live set, it can be so blindingly obvious that our audience will fall in love with an act that we feel compelled to immediately book them in. That was the case after seeing Eve Owen at Hyde Park Book Club in November 2019, her first live outing since releasing the stunning debut single ‘She Says’. Alas, like many things in the year that followed, it was not meant to be, but we were so grateful to witness such a phenomenal talent so early on. Eve Owen’s debut album, Don’t Let The Ink Dry, only builds on the mesmeric vocals and devastating melodies of the initial releases, and it’s a tragedy of our times that it has not yet been fully toured live. Get ready to make up for lost time with an amazing performance on the Acorn Stage.

MAIN STAGE, SUNDAY 9.45–10.55pm JANE WEAVER Jane Weaver is the architect of a world of wavy soundscapes where listeners can lose themselves in a mix of intrepid experimentalism and anthemic floor- fillers. And when we say “architect”, we really mean it. Weaver is self-taught, self-produced and even owns the record label Bird; her completely autonomous artistic process results in a wholly inimitable sound. The Liverpudlian star has previously performed as part of the group Kill Laura, the folktronica project Misty Dixon, and as a solo artist. Her latest album, Flock, is just as unique as each of her ten solo albums that precede it and is, in her own words, inspired by “Lebanese torch songs, 1980s Russian Aerobics records, and Australian Punk”. We’ve had the record on repeat since it was released back in March, so we know this is going to be a brilliant end to the weekend of live music. 10 DJ SETS

The great news is, with this double act, “Musical comedy hasn’t been in such safe hands for years,” in the words of The List. As seen on shows including Live at the Apollo and The Royal Variety Performance 2019, the piano and percussion pair have also headlined and played to sold-out audiences across the UK, North America and Australia, and now have an hour-long special on Amazon Prime. Next up, the Base Camp Plus Main Stage.
