We hope that by the time you read this you will have had a smooth arrival to your camping pitch, that the weather is agreeable, and that you are looking forward to some live music & comedy! Our intent with Base Camp Plus was always to design an event that you can feel safe at, that we are comfortable putting on, but also one where you can party (should you want to!). Base Camp Plus has always been sold as socially distanced – an event that would fit within Step 3 restrictions. At certain times over the last 4 months this strategy has gone from seeming sensible, to seeming too conservative, to seeming still too risky, and everything in-between and back again… but with the recent increases in the daily COVID case numbers the balance seems about right. We have some information regarding specific COVID mitigations – these are contained in an additional sheet that accompanies this programme. For everyone’s safety we expect our guests to abide by these points. Please read carefully and understand that they may be subject to revision over the weekend. We are excited to be seeing you all again after what we have all been through. We hope this weekend in Baldersby Park will lodge firmly in your collective memories and be remembered as marking the beginning of the end of this awful period. Oliver, Kate and team xxx 1 FRIDAY MUSIC MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY 3.15–4.05pm THE OFTEN HERD The Often Herd transcend the traditional boundaries of bluegrass music. Hop onto The Baghdaddies’ magic carpet for an amazing musical trip from Newcastle to Eastern Europe and the rest of the world! The Baghdaddies have been astounding audiences across Europe for over 20 years, on stages far and wide, on the streets, in village halls, and, of course, at festivals. The music appeals to everyone with a pulse, with their eclectic fusion of Balkan Roma and brass band music played at breakneck speed. Throw into the mix a little punk, jazz, reggae and ska and you have one of the most danceable bands on this or any other planet. Don’t miss The Baghdaddies’ arena walkabout performance from 1.30–2pm and their Acorn Stage set. 2 FRIDAY MUSIC MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY 6.40–7.30pm ACORN STAGE, FRIDAY 9–9.45pm; WILDERWILD, FRIDAY 11–11.45pm DEEP TAN NIKI STEVENS “We absolutely want to be different – the weirder the better,” said Wafah Dufour, the singer and guitarist of Deep Singer-songwriter Niki Stevens’ music fuses powerful Tan, East London’s newest post-punk trio, to Loud & Quiet. gospel vocals with sharp lyrics and indie folk flavours. THE LOUNGE SOCIETY Legend has it that Deer Shed was the first ever festival attended by Archie Dewis, the drummer of Yorkshire’s most exciting new post-punk band, The Lounge Society. Now, Cameron and his bandmates will be playing the Main Stage at Base Camp Plus. How cool is that? This time last year, The Lounge Society were preparing to release their debut single, ‘Generation Game’, a politically charged modern polemic produced by the rather iconic Dan Carey and released on his label, Speedy Wunderground. If you’re not familiar with Dan’s work, well, you are, because he’s worked on records for the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, Kae Tempest, Boxed In, Warmduscher, Black Midi, Squid, Fontaines D.C. and loads more. The Lounge Society’s debut EP, Silk for the Starving, was released on 18 June 2021 to rave reviews, and we reckon this could be a favourite new band for many Deer Shedders. 3 FRIDAY MUSIC MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY 9.45–10.55pm PORRIDGE RADIO Beginning as Dana Margolin’s sadcore bedroom project, Porridge Radio developed into an idiosyncratic post-punk four-piece after she moved to Brighton, who knot together Margolin’s furious emotional outpourings with beautiful pop melodies. Simon’s songwriting is witty and emotional in equal measures and we absolutely loved the album. Accordingly, we asked Simon if he fancied a slot on the Acorn Stage, and he agreed! His new album is due for release in the near future and it’ll be a joy to hear songs both old and new during his first time on the other side of the barrier at Deer Shed. MAIN STAGE, SATURDAY 6.40–7.30pm BIG JOANIE Big Joanie is a London-based three-piece formed in the summer of 2013, and another band we had booked in for Deer Shed 11. SPECIFICALLY, I EXPLORE HOW THE SOUNDS OF LAUGHTER – AS DISSEMINATED BY THE PODCAST – CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE; SETTING THE BODY IN MOTION AND LEADING TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING, FEELING AND BEING. WHILE THESE PUBLIC EXPLOSIONS OF EMOTION CAN BE TRANSGRESSIVE, I POSTULATE THAT THEY CAN ALSO RELIEVE SOME OF THE TENSION CREATED BY THE NEGATIVE AFFECTS SWIRLING AROUND FEMINISM, WHICH, ACCORDING TO AHMED, “IS ALWAYS ASSUMED TO BE BRINGING OTHERS DOWN” (AHMED, 2010:65). USING GUATTARI’S IDEAS ON THE PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVATION, I ARGUE THAT THESE EXPLOSIONS CAN INTENSIFY THE EMERGENCE OF A GLOBAL, INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST COMMUNITY, PROVOKING A CONSIDERATION OF HOW PODCASTS SUCH AS THE GUILTY FEMINIST COULD EXTEND OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ONLINE ACTIVISM WITHIN CONTEMPORARY FEMINISMS.

  • Rock Music Is a Genre of Popular Music That Entered the Mainstream in the 1950S
Rock music is a genre of popular music that entered the mainstream in the 1950s. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, rhythm and blues, country music and also drew on folk music, jazz and classical music. The sound of rock often revolves around the electric guitar, a back beat laid down by a rhythm section of electric bass guitar, drums, and keyboard instruments such as Hammond organ, piano, or, since the 1970s, synthesizers. Along with the guitar or keyboards, saxophone and blues-style harmonica are sometimes used as soloing instruments. In its "purest form", it "has three chords, a strong, insistent back beat, and a catchy melody."[1] In the late 1960s and early 1970s, rock music developed different subgenres. When it was blended with folk music it created folk rock, with blues to create blues-rock and with jazz, to create jazz-rock fusion. In the 1970s, rock incorporated influences from soul, funk, and Latin music. Also in the 1970s, rock developed a number of subgenres, such as soft rock, glam rock, heavy metal, hard rock, progressive rock, and punk rock. Rock subgenres that emerged in the 1980s included new wave, hardcore punk and alternative rock. In the 1990s, rock subgenres included grunge, Britpop, indie rock, and nu metal. A group of musicians specializing in rock music is called a rock band or rock group. Many rock groups consist of an electric guitarist, lead singer, bass guitarist, and a drummer, forming a quartet. Some groups omit one or more of these roles or utilize a lead singer who plays an instrument while singing, sometimes forming a trio or duo; others include additional musicians such as one or two rhythm guitarists or a keyboardist.
