A Taste of Text: Source Based Learning for Shabbat This Weekly Sheet Is Brought to You by Rabbi Dr A Taste of Text: Source based learning for Shabbat This weekly sheet is brought to you by Rabbi Dr. Moshe Freedman of the New West End United Synagogue in conjunction with Shapell's/Darché Noam PARSHAT VAYISHLACH DVAR TORAH: DEVELOPING PERSON, DEVELOPING NATION Yaakov interacts with angels in both Parshat Vayeitzei and Parshat Vayishlach, but there is a strong contrast between the two parshiot, especially according to Rashi’s commentary. The angels of Vayeitzei protected Yaakov. The angels Yaakov saw in his dream, says Rashi (Bereishit 28:12), were those of Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel) who had been escorting him, and those of Chutz Laaretz (outside of the Land of Israel) who now descended to accompany him. Hashem, in Yaakov’s vision, told him, “I will be with you and protect you wherever you go …” (Bereishit 28:15). That protection works through Hashem’s angels. At the end of Vayeitzei, Yaakov sees two camps of angels: the angels of Chutz Laaretz who had been accompanying him until now and the angels of Eretz Yisrael who now began to escort him. In the middle of Vayeitzei we see one of those angels in action. As Yaakov told Rachel and Leah, an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him how he was being protected from Lavan’s trickery. וישלח יעקב מלאכים“ .Yaakov related to the angels of Parshat Vayishlach very differently than he did in Vayeitzei מלאכים – were actual heavenly angels מלאכים Bereishit 32:4). Rashi says that those) ”מלאכים Yaakov sends – messengers he was not afraid would be killed by Esav. The Yaakov of Parshat Vayishlach was not only ,ממש .(Bereishit 32:5) ”ויצו אותם – protected by angels, he sent them on a mission and “commanded them As the narrative progresses, Yaakov not only sent and commanded angels, but struggled with them. He met a “man” and wrestled with him all night. As that episode unfolds verse by verse, the “man” emerges as really an angel. Why would a mere man change Yaakov’s name to Yisrael, “for you struggled with man and angel and prevailed” (Bereishit 32:29)? Why would a man say “send me for the dawn has broken” (Bereishit 32:27)? And, lastly, if he only wrestled with a man, why did Yaakov call that place Peniel, for “I have seen an angel face to face” (Bereishit 32:31)? That angel, says Rashi (in his comments on Bereishit 32:25), was the spiritual power behind Esav; Yaakov struggled with him and, though limping, prevailed. The angel blessed him there. This contrast between the Yaakov of Vayeitzei and the Yaakov of Vayishlach illustrates the contrast between Yaakov and Esav. Esav was, as Rashi explains (on Bereishit 25:25), fully formed at birth. Esav was static, but Yaakov developed. He grew from a Yaakov to whom Hashem sends angels for protection, to a Yaakov to whom Hashem trusts to send angels on a mission, to a Yaakov who struggles with angels. One verse, near the end of the account of the meeting between Yaakov and Esav, describes Yaakov’s character. After Esav offered to accompany Yaakov, and, perhaps, join forces with him, Yaakov explained: Let my – יַעֲבָר נָא אֲדֹנִי לִפְ נֵי עַבְ ּדֹו וַאֲנִי אֶתְ נַהֲלָה ילְאִטִ לְרֶ גֶל הַמְ לָאכָה ראֲשֶ לְפָנַי ּולְרֶ גֶל הַיְלָדִ ים עַד אֲשֶ ר אָ בֹא אֶ ל אֲדֹנִי שֵעִירָ ה“ master pass before his servant, and I will progress according to my slow pace, because of the work before me and because of the children – until I reach my master in Se’ir” (Bereishit 33:14). Yaakov said to Esav: I need to go slowly. I am little by little cultivating a nation and we are only in our beginning stages. I am a developing person and will build, throughout history, a developing nation. But we will meet up one day at the very end of time. SOURCE GUIDE: PEOPLE AND PLACE In one of his essays on Parshat Vayishlach, the author of the Sfat Emet discusses the special connection particular people have with particular places. His starting point is the verse describing Yaakov’s arrival to the outskirts of Shechem. That essay is the basis of this source guide. After his struggle with the angel, Yaakov entered the Land of Israel and reached Shechem: בראשית לג:יח Bereishit 33:18 .1 וַיָבֹא יַעֲקֹב שָ לֵם עִ יר שְ כֶם אֲשֶ ר בְאֶרֶ ץ Yaakov came, whole and complete, to the city of Shechem in the Land of Canaan when he came from Padan Aram, and he encamped on the outskirts of the city. the Gerrer Rebbe, 1847-1905), builds) זצ"ל ,The author of the Sfat Emet, Harav Yehudah Aryeh Leib Alter that describes a special ,חן he encamped,” and the word – ויחן“ on the association between the word affinity, and is often translated as charm, grace, or favor: סוטה מז. Sotah 47a .2 אמר רבי יוחנן שלשה חינות הן: חן מקום Rabbi Yochanan said: There are three instances of favor – the על יושביו; חן אשה על בעלה; חן מקח favor of a place [in the eyes of] its inhabitants, the favor of a על מקחו. woman [in the eyes of] her husband, and the the favor of a purchase [in the eyes of] its purchaser. Rabbi Yochanan here describes a special connection any person has for his or her place of residence – even the way Bostonians might feel about Boston, Londoners about London, or Brazilians about Brazil. The Torah, in this verse, hints at Yaakov’s special affinity for the Land of Israel. Hashem chose Tzion (which the author of the Sfat Emet perhaps understands as referring not only to Yerushalayim and the Beit Hamikdash but also to the entire Land of Israel they are within): תהילים קלב:יג Tehillim 132:13 .3 כִ י בָחַר ה' בְצִ יֹוןאִ ּוָּה בלְמֹושָ לֹו. .For Hashem chose Tzion; He desired it as a dwelling place for Him And Hashem similarly chose Yaakov: תהילים קלה:ד Tehillim 135:4 .4 כִ י יַעֲקֹב בָחַר לֹו יָּה יִשְרָ אֵל לִסְ גֻלָתֹו: .For Hashem chose Yaakov, [he chose] Yisrael his treasured one Hashem’s two chosen ones are therefore linked together: תהילים צד:יד Tehillim 94:14 .5 כִ י לֹא יִטֹש ה' עַמֹו וְנַחֲלָתֹו לֹא יַעֲזֹב. For Hashem will not desert His nation, and He will not leave His inheritance. Our forefathers cultivated this connection and elevated the Land of Israel to a new level: שפת אמת פרשת וישלח - שנת תרנ"ב Sfat Emet Parshat Vayishlach – 5752 .6 ובכח האבות נעשה ארץ הקדושה מקום Through the power of the forefathers the Holy Land became a וז"ש ,place sanctified to become the dwelling place of Hashem’s Honor "אשרי יושבי ביתך" )תהילים פד:ה(. may He be blessed. This is what is meant by the verse, “Fortunate are those who dwell in Your house” (Tehillim 84:5). Other nations are also connected with their respective lands – but in a different way: שבת פה. Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani quoted Rabbi Yonatan: What is meant יונתן: ]מאי[ דכתיב "אלה בני שעיר by the verse, “These are the people of Se’ir, the Chorites dwellers החורי יושבי הארץ" )בראשית לו:כ(? of the land” (Bereishit 36:20)? Does the rest of the world dwell in Rather, it means that they were experts in cultivating the They would say, “This measure is appropriate for olives. This לגפנים. מלא קנה זה לתאנים." ו"חרי" measure is appropriate for grape vines. This appropriate is fit for שמריחים את הארץ, ו"חוי" – אמר רב figs.” The name “Chori” hints at their ability to smell the land [and פפא: שהיו טועמין את הארץ כחויא. :know its agricultural benefits]. The name “Chivi” – Rav Pappa said [This name hints at their ability to taste the land like a snake [and know its agricultural benefits]. The Chorites and the Chivites had a great sensitivity to their particular places: שפת אמת פרשת וישלח - שנת Sfat Emet Parshat Vayishlach – 5752 .8 תרנ"ב They understood the physical side of the land in order to make it שהם היו מבינים בגשמיות הארץ habitable. The Children of Israel knows how to create the inner לעשותו ישוב. ובני ישראל עושין ישוב side of habitation. They are therefore called “dwellers of Your הפנימי, ולכן נקראין "יושבי ביתך," house,” for they know and understand which places are primed שיודעין ומבינים המקום המוכן לקדושה. .for holiness The forefathers laid the groundwork for Israel’s connection with the Land of Israel and Hashem’s dwelling place on the Temple Mount in Yerushalayim. But it was David Hamelech who actualized the connection between the place Hashem chose and the People Hashem chose. He was possessed with a powerful desire to build the Beit Hamikdash. He expressed his quest through Tehillim’s Mizmor 132, that begins with these five verses: תהילים קלב:ה Tehillim 132:5 .9 )א( שִ יר הַמַ עֲלֹות זְכֹור ה' לְדָוִד אֵ ת כָל A song of ascents. The Way to the Tree of Life Jewish practice entails fulfilling many laws. Our diet is limited, our days to work are defined, and every aspect of life has governing directives. Is observance of all the laws easy? Is a perfectly righteous life close to our heart and near to our limbs? A righteous life seems to be an impossible goal! However, in the Torah, our great teacher Moshe, Moses, declared that perfect fulfillment of all religious law is very near and easy for each of us. Every word of the Torah rings true in every generation. Lesson one explores how the Tanya resolved these questions. It will shine a light on the infinite strength that is latent in each Jewish soul. When that unending holy desire emerges, observance becomes easy. Lesson One: The Infinite Strength of the Jewish Soul The title page of the Tanya states: A Collection of Teachings ספר PART ONE לקוטי אמרים חלק ראשון Titled הנקרא בשם The Book of the Beinonim ספר של בינונים Compiled from sacred books and Heavenly מלוקט מפי ספרים ומפי סופרים קדושי עליון נ״ע teachers, whose souls are in paradise; based מיוסד על פסוק כי קרוב אליך הדבר מאד בפיך ובלבבך לעשותו upon the verse, “For this matter is very near to לבאר היטב איך הוא קרוב מאד בדרך ארוכה וקצרה ”;you, it is in your mouth and heart to fulfill it בעזה״י and explaining clearly how, in both a long and short way, it is exceedingly near, with the aid of the Holy One, blessed be He. "1 of "393 The Way to the Tree of Life From the outset of his work therefore Rav Shneur Zalman made plain that the Tanya is a guide for those he called “beinonim.” Beinonim, derived from the Hebrew bein, which means “between,” are individuals who are in the middle, neither paragons of virtue, tzadikim, nor sinners, rishoim.

  • Rabbi Menachem Ziemba
Rabbi Menachem Ziemba May 16 is the symbolic date of the end of the Warsaw ghetto uprising and the ghetto’s annihilation. Rabbi Menachem Ziemba was born in the Warsaw suburb of Praga on the 13th of Elul 5643 (1883), He was known from an early age as a genius in Torah. Orphaned from his father at the age of nine, he was raised by his Grandfather who encouraged him to travel to the Gerrer Rebbe, Rabbi Arye Leib Alter author of the Sfas Emes, and for the rest of his life remained a Gerrer chasid. He spent many years writing original Torah thoughts and by 1939 had written about 10000 pages of manuscripts. He eventually became known as one of the greatest Torah scholars, and was in regular correspondence with the leading Rabbis and scholars throughout Europe. After his marriage he lived in his Father-in-law’s house at 34 Brukowa St. in Praga. In 1935 he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Warsaw. After the German occupation of Warsaw, Rabbi Ziemba volunteered to join the “council of elders” but other leading Rabbis were opposed to this. Instead, R’ Shimshon Stockhammer and R’ Dovid Shapiro were nominated. They were in contact with, and advised by, the Rabbis’ committee headed by R’ Menachem. When a plan was devised to rescue the Gerrer Rebbe and his family, Rabbi Ziemba was to be included but due to complications was unable to leave Warsaw. In the winter of 1940, he was detained by the Germans who tortured him in order to force him to reveal details of wealthy Jews.

Hospital on the horizon? | Jerusalem Post Page 1 of 3 Hospital on the horizon? Susan de la Fuente , THE JERUSALEM POST Mar. 9, 2008 Even if our lives are generally uneventful, we sometimes need emergency medical services or hospitalization and expect to find such facilities close to our home or workplace. Today's deteriorating security situation now makes this need more vital than ever, especially in Israel's southern region. Though no such problem exists in central Israel, our southern region lags far behind in development and funding. Of 28 emergency room facilities in the country, only three are located in the South. The 235,000 residents of Ashdod, Israel's fifth-largest city, plus another 40,000-50,000 in its surrounding areas, have until now faced the lack of a hospital and emergency room (ER) services. They are forced to travel to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, to Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot, or to major medical centers farther afield for whatever assistance the local health fund clinics and Magen David Adom cannot supply. Now, finally, prospects appear less bleak. Although excavations for the Ashdod Emergency Medical Center began only in February 2006, the gray concrete outline of a nine-story building has already emerged from the sand dunes of southern Ashdod. "Now [that] I see the building, I feel more optimistic," says veteran Mayor Zvi Zilker. The ground-floor ER and trauma center, with a lobby and ambulance bay at its front, and the 1st floor - housing an imaging institute and service and maintenance facilities - are scheduled to open their doors in August.

  • Hundreds Protest Netanyahu Decision to Halt Shabbat Train Work
TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE The tension between religious and secular in Israel is always felt, erupting at different times over different issues. This time it is transportation, specifically whether or not the government can do repair work on Shabbat, even if not doing that work will inconvenience thousands of commuters. There is a ‘status quo’ agreement that has been in place for 70 years, but it’s complicated, and many realities have changed in that time. What is an reasonable solution to the tension between the religious nature of a large part of the population, and the needs of a modern state in which large parts of the population are not religious? http://www.timesofisrael.com/hundreds-protest-netanyahu-decision-to-halt-shabbat-train-work/ Hundreds protest Netanyahu decision to halt Shabbat train work Opposition MKs join angry Tel Aviv and Haifa residents demonstrating against PM for capitulating to ultra-Orthodox pressure BY TIMES OF ISRAEL STAFF September 4, 2016, 9:31 am 6 Hundreds of people in Tel Aviv and Haifa on Saturday night demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to halt infrastructure work on several of Israel’s railway stations on Shabbat following pressure from ultra-Orthodox parties. The protests, which drew Knesset opposition figures, came hours before the halting of trains between Tel Aviv and Haifa amid a bitter intra-Likud row snarled Sunday morning traffic for over 100,000 travelers and commuters, including thousands of soldiers trying to return to base. Protesters gathered outside various train stations in both cities waving Israeli flags, carrying signs that read “Bibi, this is our train too,” and “Let’s get the country back on track.” The rallies were organized by an organization called Free Israel, a non-profit group fighting against ultra-Orthodox hegemony in Israel.
