  • A Guide for Owners & Trainers
A GUIDE FOR OWNERS & TRAINERS TUESDAY 30 JULY – SATURDAY 3 AUGUST 2019 THE QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL Welcome To Goodwood Proudly boasting an illustrious history and heritage, Goodwood is an inspirational and unique venue that has often been described as the world’s most beautiful racecourse. I am delighted that the continuing success of the Qatar Goodwood Festival has culminated in further race upgrades, most notably The Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes, upgrading to Group 2 status last year. Goodwood has, for more than 200 years, been about the best racing in the most English of settings, accessible to everyone. Our partnership with Qatar has enabled us to significantly increase the prize money on offer this and it is, as always, key for us that this new money does not just sit at the top end but trickles down to the grassroots of the entire race programme. Royalty, celebrities, sporting heroes, statesmen and diplomats have all enjoyed visiting Goodwood. It now gives me great pleasure to invite some of the very best overseas owners and trainers to be a part of this truly great horseracing Festival and join our ambition to become the best race week experience in the world. The Duke of Richmond and Gordon Owner of Goodwood Over £5million in prize money will be awarded over five thrilling days at Goodwood Racecourse from 30 July – 3 August 2019 The Qatar Goodwood Festival, now in its fifth year, has established itself as one of the most competitive and entertaining weeks in the international racing calendar. Including the increase in prize money for the upgraded Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes the total prize purse for the Festival now exceeds £5.5million and no race will be run for less than £25,000.

  • Sea the Stars & Crystal Ocean
TUESDAY, 26 JUNE 2018 There was never going to be any difficulty in their first season, PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: SEA THE when Sea The Stars was priced at i85,000 and Frankel at ,125,000 and they respectively covered 136 and 131 mares. The STARS & CRYSTAL OCEAN problem is that there isn't an endless supply of breeders prepared to invest heavily in untried but high-priced stallions and events showed that not even Sea The Stars and Frankel were immune to the fluctuating demand that affects so many young stallions in their first four seasons. It now seems hard to believe that Sea The Stars's totals in those first four years were 136, 83, 138 and 82 mares. Frankel's figures were 131, 128, 104 and 105. Perhaps Frankel's arrival as a stallion in 2013 was partly to blame for Sea The Stars's book falling to 82 mares, but their main problem was that these unproven horses were competing against stallions whose ability to sire top performers had been proven time after time. THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2016 AN HONORABLE STRETCH DUEL AT THE SPA EXAGGERATOR TO RUN by Alan Carasso IN HASKELL The late action came for New York-bred Haveyougoneaway (Congrats), as she crashed down into 7-2 after sitting on the board at as much as 7-1 for a fair amount of time ahead of Wednesday=s GII Honorable Miss H. at Saratoga. And the money proved right on. A recent private acquisition by Sequel Racing, the 5-year-old mare sat an excellent trip behind swift early fractions, was tipped out at the top of the stretch by Kendrick Carmouche and just got the better of a final-furlong tussle to down a tough-as-nails Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) in the dying strides. It was another dozen lengths back to Disco Chick (Jump Start) in third. The win was the first in graded company for trainer Tom Morley. AIt's very special to do it with a New York-bred. FRIDAY, 23 JUNE, 2017 TIPPERARY ON TOP ON DAY TO REMEMBER BIG FINISH TO GOLD CUP By Emma Berry THRILLER As is the tradition at Royal Ascot, the post-race picnics have lasted long into the night this week and guests at Wednesday's traditional Irish gathering had plenty of reason to celebrate. For two small breeding partnerships in Tipperary, Tuesday's results were particularly special. The opening race, the G1 Queen Anne S., went to Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), bred by Mike O'Brien and Andrew Thompson, and 35 minutes later it was the turn of their neighbour Jim Mulcahy, who bred G2 Coventry S. winner Rajasinghe (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) in partnership with his son Geoff. "It's difficult to believe--it was really amazing," said Mulcahy senior, a veterinary surgeon from Kilshane. "We came to Ascot hoping that he might run into a place and he surpassed all our expectations. The congratulations we've had from every Tom, Dick and Harry--my phone has nearly blown up. We drank a few bottles of Pimm's and then we drank a few more after that. • Harry Angel Flying High Among Star Cast for Sprint
A dazzling cast is set to line up for the seventh QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on 21st October after the latest forfeit stage. Britain’s richest raceday, with £4.3 million of prize money on offer, remains the target for 35 Group 1 winners who between them have won 67 races at the highest level. They include headline acts such as Ribchester, Cracksman, Harry Angel, Order of St George, Churchill, The Tin Man, Barney Roy and Big Orange. Others still in the mix for the spectacular finale, which features four Group 1 races, a Group 2 and the richest mile handicap in Europe, are Caravaggio, Winter and Beat The Bank. HARRY ANGEL FLYING HIGH AMONG STAR CAST FOR SPRINT QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes (£600,000) Group 1 (Please quote the QIPCO British Champions Series if using any quotes) Harry Angel, currently rated the best sprinter in the world on official ratings, heads a superb cast of 25 still in the mix for the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes. Four other speedsters with Group 1 wins to their name – Caravaggio, The Tin Man (winner of the race last year), Quiet Reflection and Limato – are also still engaged. Clive Cox is delighted with the well-being of Harry Angel who is no bigger than 6-4 in the ante-post betting to extend his winning sequence on QIPCO British Champions Day having landed the Darley July Cup at Newmarket before following up with a stunning four-length success in the 32Red Sprint Cup at Haydock last time. “He’s come out of the Haydock race absolutely super and I’m very pleased with him,” Cox said.
