UMaine News Press Releases from Word Press XML export 2021 Piscataquis County Extension Association Jan. 11 meeting features Rural Youth Futures Project 04 Jan 2021 The Piscataquis County Extension Association annual meeting begins at 3 p.m. Jan. 11 online and is open to the public. The meeting will include a presentation by Jessica Leahy, a professor in the University of Maine School of Forest Resources, focused on the Rural Youth Futures Project. The initiative was launched in response to changing economic, population and workforce needs in rural communities. Other presentations include workforce development for rural youth, an update on a recent challenge grant, an overview of the year’s programs from UMaine Extension Piscataquis County staff, and a video presentation by the Extension 4-H Communications Science Team. Press Herald mentions UMaine website touting Maine-made masks 04 Jan 2021 In an article about pampering ourselves in 2021, the Portland Press Herald mentioned a University of Maine Innovation and Economic Development webpage that features makers and retailers of Maine-made face coverings and safety products. Youth esports collaboration with town of Orono highlighted in BDN 04 Jan 2021 The Bangor Daily News reported that the town of Orono and the University of Maine have partnered to form an esports league for the town’s elementary students. The league, which is for students in grades 2-5, offers a 6-week Minecraft competition that includes weekly one-on-one timed matches. News Center Maine also reported on the collaboration. Morning Ag, Centralmaine.com advance new vegetable varieties webinar Jan. 13 04 Jan 2021 Morning Ag Clips and Centralmaine.com promoted a University of Maine Cooperative Extension webinar, “Exciting New Vegetable Varieties for Home Gardeners,” which is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 13. Lichtenwalner speaks with BDN about conditioning hens to lay eggs 04 Jan 2021 Anne Lichtenwalner, a University of Maine Cooperative Extension associate professor and director of the veterinary diagnostic laboratory, spoke with the Bangor Daily News about providing the proper nutrition and environment to support development of young hens into successful egg producers. BDN spotlights Maine Hunger Dialogue grant to Honors College 04 Jan 2021 The Bangor Daily News reported that the University of Maine Honors College received a $500 grant from the Maine Hunger Dialogue. The funds will be used to reduce food insecurity in the student population, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Comer Family Foundation interviews Denton about legacy of research, teaching 04 Jan 2021 The Comer Family Foundation interviewed George Denton about his legacy of research and instruction. The University of Maine Libra Professor of Geological Sciences with the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and the Climate Change Institute has spent years tackling large research questions surrounding abrupt climate change, particularly “the history of glaciers seeking clues as to when, why, and how they transform,” according to the foundation’s story about his work. He has also dedicated himself to training the next generation of scientists through his classes at UMaine. “Get the young people deeply involved in the research. “Once they’re deeply involved, they learn fast and they come up with new ideas,” Denton said. The foundation also spoke with former students and current UMaine faculty Brenda Hall, professor of glacial geology in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and the CCI, and Aaron Putnam, an assistant professor in the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and CCI, about Denton’s work and influence. “The beauty of it is he really teaches people how to become independent thinkers, not just to learn a method or something, but really to think about how the world works,” Putnam said. The foundation, which finances efforts to advance healthcare, education, environmental science and culture, has helped fund research expeditions for Denton and his students, and founder Gary Comer created the Comer Fellowship with the UMaine Libra Professor. UMaine Memorial Union accessible with MaineCard 05 Jan 2021 Access to the University of Maine Memorial Union is restricted to current University of Maine System and UMaine employees and current UMaine students through Jan. 10. Building doors are locked. A MaineCard swipe portal is available for authorized entry on the northeast exterior door of the union, near the corner of the building off MLK Plaza. Building hours are online. The Bear’s Den in the union is open for the UMaine community, including residential students living in Estabrooke and Stodder halls. Bear’s Den hours of operation are 9 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. More information is online. The University Bookstore and the UMaine Package and Postal Center are open 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. UMaine Extension offers farmer and gardener boot camp for veterans, disabled farmers 05 Jan 2021 University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer training in small-scale farming for market sales to military veterans and family members and farmers with disabilities starting in January. “Boots-2-Bushels: Boot Camp for Market Gardeners and Farmers” features semimonthly online classes that will be held through May 24 via Zoom and weekly, hands-on fieldwork from May–September at the Kennebec Valley Community College Harold Alfond Campus, 677 Skowhegan Road, Clinton. The first online class will be held from noon–4 p.m. Jan. 11. Training topics will include soil health and crop planning, seedling, vegetable and small fruit production; harvest and storage, safe food handling, marketing and farm business planning, integrated pest management, and tool and equipment maintenance and safety. Experts from UMaine Extension and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will serve as instructors. The $50 per person fee includes textbooks and supplies. Registration is required and can be done on the event webpage. Space is limited, and preference will be given to veterans and family members and farmers with disabilities. Participants who attend 85% of classes and field work will earn a certificate of completion and letter of recommendation. Participants may harvest weekly shares of produce grown. WVII talks with Anderson about worst year in history 05 Jan 2021 WVII (Channel 7) interviewed Joel Anderson, a University of Maine assistant professor of history, about whether 2020 was the worst year in history.
