The Lethal Legion and the Black Order have arrived on Earth to fight for cosmic objects called Pyramoids, which are wreaking elemental havoc on their surroundings. Most of the world’s heroes and villains have been trapped in a mysterious stasis, leaving behind only a handful of Avengers as the planet’s last line of defense. When Pyramoids landed in Rome and Peru, the remaining Avengers split into teams to investigate, but the battle has already claimed several of them, and Black Dwarf beat the Rome team to the first Pyramoid. After the heroes in Rome saw their Pyramoid inexplicably annihilate Black Dwarf, they sent Lightning to Peru to warn the other team of the danger, but he was too late--the Human Torch had already touched the second Pyramoid… WRITERS Al Ewing, Jim Zub & Mark Waid ARTIST Kim Jacinto Color Artist David Curiel Letterer VC’s Cory Petit CoVER Mark Brooks VARIANT COVERS Editor in Chief Nick Bradshaw & Jim Campbell; Ramon Perez C.B. Introduction It is the 51st Millennium, and the war continues. There was no great conflagration or calamitous final battle. Across the vastness of the galaxy, the Imperium died. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. The galactic empire of humanity crumbled, its enemies too many, too great and too terrible to imagine. The great conflict of Octavius had no victory, a war without end. In the fiery chasm of strife, the locust and the green holocaust fused, as beast looked upon barbarian and both saw the other as kin. The new entity spread with a speed undreamt of by ork or tyranid. War and hunger melded into a singular desire to ravage, rape and remake all in the image of the new devourer. The Devourer’s hybrid nightmares were regenerative, and spore-born, combining into a grand horror, which murdered the galaxy, leaving naught but fragments as it left. Metallic sentinels of unflinching dread rose up on some worlds, leaving them safe from the new devourer waaagh, but instead made them slaves to the silver sentinels, and fodder for their glowing metal gods. The Eldar who had held on to life for so long, slowly winked out of existence one craftworld at a time. Eventually, even the rumbling hearts of the avatars fell silent. For a time... In the dead craftworlds, something slithers through the infinity circuit to this day. Unfortunately, the great god of the dead, Ynnead, is trapped within this infinity circuit, howling its mournful song into the darkness, eternally hungry in its desire to wreak vengeance on She Who Thirsts.

  • Intelligent Business
Intelligent Business Walt Disney buys Marvel Entertainment Of mouse and X-Men Sep 3rd 2009 | NEW YORK From The Economist print edition Will Disney's latest acquisition prove as Marvellous as it appears? NOT even the combined powers of Spiderman, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and the X-Men could keep The Mouse at bay. On August 31st Walt Disney announced it was buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, just days after the comic- book publisher had celebrated 70 glorious years of independence, during which it had created many of the most famous cartoon characters not invented by Disney itself. In fact, Marvel did not put up much of a fight, accepting what most analysts think was a generous price. Disney will get access both to Marvel's creative minds and— potentially far more valuable in an age when familiar stories rule the box office—an archive containing around 5,000 established characters, only a fraction of which have yet made the move from paper to the silver screen. Marrying Marvel's characters with Disney's talent for making money from successful franchises is a good idea. In recent years Disney has proved the undisputed master at Disney is bringing the exploiting the same basic content through multiple channels, including films, websites, commercial heft video games, merchandising, live shows and theme parks. The edgier, darker Marvel characters should fill a hole in Disney's much cuddlier portfolio. This currently covers most people from newborn babies, through the addictive "Baby Einstein" DVDs (popularly known as "baby crack"), to adults, through its Touchstone label.

  • Handbook of Iron Meteorites, Volume 2 (Canyon Diablo, Part 2)
Canyon Diablo 395 The primary structure is as before. However, the kamacite has been briefly reheated above 600° C and has recrystallized throughout the sample. The new grains are unequilibrated, serrated and have hardnesses of 145-210. The previous Neumann bands are still plainly visible , and so are the old subboundaries because the original precipitates delineate their locations. The schreibersite and cohenite crystals are still monocrystalline, and there are no reaction rims around them. The troilite is micromelted , usually to a somewhat larger extent than is present in I-III. Severe shear zones, 100-200 J1 wide , cross the entire specimens. They are wavy, fan out, coalesce again , and may displace taenite, plessite and minerals several millimeters. The present exterior surfaces of the slugs and wedge-shaped masses have no doubt been produced in a similar fashion by shear-rupture and have later become corroded. Figure 469. Canyon Diablo (Copenhagen no. 18463). Shock The taenite rims and lamellae are dirty-brownish, with annealed stage VI . Typical matte structure, with some co henite crystals to the right. Etched. Scale bar 2 mm. low hardnesses, 160-200, due to annealing. In crossed Nicols the taenite displays an unusual sheen from many small crystals, each 5-10 J1 across. This kind of material is believed to represent shock annealed fragments of the impacting main body. Since the fragments have not had a very long flight through the atmosphere, well developed fusion crusts and heat-affected rim zones are not expected to be present. The energy responsible for bulk reheating of the small masses to about 600° C is believed to have come from the conversion of kinetic to heat energy during the impact and fragmentation.

  • Blood Brothers the Firefighters and Paramedics We Ask to Protect Us Face Danger Every Day
Blood Brothers The firefighters and paramedics we ask to protect us face danger every day. But when it comes to a deadly infectious disease, hepatitis C, we leave them to face fate alone. Timothy J. Condron Cincinnati Magazine April 1, 2002 - Tony Humble has always been a hulk of a man. At six feet, three inches and two hundred seventy pounds, he could peer from behind his blond Fu Manchu mustache with a menacing gaze that would make you wonder why you wanted to speak to him in the first place. But true to his name, he has the calm demeanor and kindness of Gandhi. Make that about five Gandhis stacked together. As a Norwood fire fighter and paramedic, Tony lives with pressure. But his cool sense of composure keeps his mind focused on the tasks at hand, which is precisely why he finds himself in charge of organizing the fire fighters’ annual golf outing. It’s a thankless task, one that requires him to solicit sponsors, organize foursomes, make sure food and beverages are donated, and see that proceeds from the event are properly collected. The July event benefits a scholarship fund established in the name of two Norwood fire fighters who died in the line of duty. One of those men, James Condron, was my father. On a fairly routine paramedic run in December 1977, his unit was called to assist a man who had ingested an overdose of prescription drugs with an unknown quantity of alcohol. Arriving on the scene, my father found the patient semi-comatose and inserted in the man’s arm an intravenous needle to begin medical treatment.
