Page 12 • www.JamestownGazette.com Jamestown Gazette May 28, 2013 Life & Times of a Modern Housewife PUZZLES “Life is difficult.” M. Scott Peck

Article Contributed by Katrina Fuller (Answers on page 16.) I was born two months early, taken in desperate measures in hopes that I would live. It didn’t look good, but that night all the right people were on staff, and I survived. Afterwards, I had to stay in the hospital for quite some time. My parents, worried, exhausted, and probably scared out of their minds, religiously made the trek to the hospital to make sure I was still ok. I can only imagine how they felt, seeing their baby hooked up to tubes and monitors, unsure of how each day would end. It was not, I’m sure, a feeling they would wish on anyone. It was a horrible situation, brightened by the fact that by great some miracle, we all survived it. The path to get through it was dark, lonely, and terrifying. Mr. Peck had it right: Life is difficult. These things happen for seemingly no reason. Disaster strikes, calamity hits, and confusion abounds. We are trapped in this struggle with no clear explanation as to why. We ask: Why me? Why must I suffer so? Why did I lose my job? Why am I sick? Why do horrible things happen to good people? And of course, we don’t see an answer. Our lives are hard, we are in agony, and there is no comfort to be seen. We are Job, wandering in the wilderness, having lost everything. Everyone has their stories to tell; some end up good, some are cautionary, and some tell a tale of pain and grief that few, if anyone, would understand. I could say that these things happen for a reason; I could pretend that in the end, everything will turn out for the best. But, dear readers, sometimes it doesn’t. These are the stories that break my heart. The stories that I hope my child never has to tell. M. Scott Peck goes on to say that once we figure out that life is hard, it gets better because it ceases to matter that it is difficult. Acceptance of this fact is difficult. I struggle with it almost daily. However, perhaps it is the difficulties we face that make the good times so great. When you can value the better moments, perhaps it is not so bad. In our darkest hours, it is only the memories of the sun that keep us going. This week, dear readers, I urge you to remember the good times. Relish the moments with your families, the picnics at the park, the best moments you can conjure. Keep these thoughts for yourself, because these are the important ones.
