Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance. -

Lachlan Turnbull, The Man of Sorrows and the King of Glory in Italy, c. 1250-c. 1350 LACHLAN TURNBULL The Man of Sorrows and the King of Glory in Italy, c. 1250- c. 1350 ABSTRACT The Man of Sorrows – an iconographic type of Jesus Christ following his Crucifixion – has received extensive analytical treatment in the art-historical literature. Following a model that draws scholarly attention to the dynamics of cross-cultural artistic exchange in the central Middle Ages, this article reconsiders recent advances in the scholarly literature and refocusses analysis upon the Man of Sorrows within the context of its ‘shared’ intercultural heritage, suspended between Byzantium and the West, as an image ultimately transformed from liturgical icon to iconographic device. Introduction The image of Jesus’ Crucifixion was originally believed to be either so scandalous, or considered so absurd, that the iconographic means by which to depict it constituted an almost reluctantly-developed theme in Christian art.1 Recent research indicates that Christian Crucifixion iconography emerged in the fourth century and emphasised the salvific – which is to imply, triumphal – aspect of Jesus’ death.2 ‘The Passion’, commencing with the betrayal of Jesus by his disciple Judas Iscariot, culminating in Jesus’ redemptive sacrifice by his Crucifixion and ending with his Resurrection, is a critical narrative in Christian faith.3 The reality of the Crucifixion, including the penetration of Jesus’ side and the issuing of blood and water,4 are pivotal mystic concepts linked to the key Christian doctrines of transubstantiation and sacrificial resurrection, and thus to the efficacy of the Eucharistic Mystery and Christian communion.5 The twinned natures of Jesus, his humanity and divinity, underpin the salvific significance of his death, and the image of his crucified body reinforces the memory of, identification with, and sympathy for Jesus whilst reinforcing the message of his ultimate return. -

THE MIRACULOUS INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE Fr. Peter Davies, O.Carm. In 1945 came the end of the Second World War. As soon as the gates of a concentration camp near Prague were flung open, a certain holy priest walked out that day from the place which he had never expected to leave alive. A deep gratitude filled his heart as he directed his steps immediately towards the Church of Our Lady of Victories. There he celebrated his first Mass in freedom beneath the statue of the Holy Infant of Prague, so much revered by his people. A few months later this holy man was nominated and consecrated Archbishop of Prague, and a little later still his name was to become a household word throughout the world; for this was Archbishop Beran, the prelate who has suffered so much in his struggle with the communists. THE STORY OF THE STATUE What is the history of this image of the Child Jesus, beloved of the Czech people, to which devotion has spread among all the peoples of the world? It is a story intimately connected with the Order of Carmel, and shows the loving care of the Divine Child for the Order which has as its aim the glorification of His Mother. The image itself is beautifully moulded of wax, and is eighteen inches high. Copies of it may be seen in very many convents, churches and homes. The child‟s figure is crowned with a golden crown, the orb is carried in the left hand, and the right hand is extended in blessing. -
