OUR HISTORY Founded in 2000, Stuart Hall High School is an independent Catholic school and a division of Schools of the Sacred Heart San Francisco. All aspects of the school’s program reflect a commitment to providing excellence in education, challenging and preparing graduates to be active and informed members of a global society. In partnership with Convent High School, Stuart Hall High School offers academic and cocurricular programming in both single-sex and coed settings. MISSION & THE FIVE GOALS Convent & Stuart Hall educates mind, Heart and body, animating a zeal for discovery, inspiring a passion for justice, and nurturing the strength to transform Convent & Stuart Hall in San Francisco is a member of a community of 24 Sacred Heart schools in North America, Convent High School is committed to the educational values articulated more than 200 years ago by foundress Madeleine Sophie Barat, and to five shared “goals”: a personal and active faith in God a deep respect for intellectual values a social awareness which impels to action the building of community as a Christian value personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

These five goals are core tenets for all members of community - students and faculty alike - and inform every aspect of school life. THE CURRICULAR PROGRAM Stuart Hall High School’s curriculum serves and challenges the whole person—in mind, Heart and body. The freshman and sophomore years provide contemporary avenues of learning and essential strategies to engage critical reasoning, advancing written and presentational communication skills across the humanities, mathematics, sciences, languages, and the arts. This 9th and 10th grade experience sets students on a pathway towards elective programming in the junior and senior years, including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and a suite of higher level teacher-curated and AP specialty courses. STUART HALL HIGH SCHOOL 2017-18 SCHOOL PROFILE

THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME As a reflection of the strong match between the IB’s mission “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people” and the school’s commitment to challenge and educate students in “mind, Heart and body,” the school implemented the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as a curricular offering in the 2016-17 school year. The IBDP is a two-year elective course of study for junior and senior Convent & Stuart Hall students. Class of 2018 is the first to include IBDP candidates in its graduating class 19 of 51 seniors have opted-in and enrolled in the program. *All students who express the desire to engage the IBDP are enrolled. *Students enrolled in IBDP do not take AP courses, and vice versa. OUR COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL AWARENESS AND ACTION Awareness of local and global need is an integral component of a Sacred Heart education. Students and faculty collaborate on service projects and community involvement; Theology courses in ethics and social justice theory illuminate issues of injustice and impel students to take action to confront it. Across disciplines, course readings and seminar discussion inspire an ethical and global lens, as SHHS students look inward to find connections, and develop their voice in service the world. GLOBAL AWARENESS As a Sacred Heart school with a membership of over 200 schools worldwide, SHHS embraces and continues 200 years of education for global citizenship. In the belief that experiential learning is an essential component of a well-rounded curriculum, students may choose to participate in both U.S. and international reciprocal exchange programs ranging from 2- 6 weeks. FACULTY 76% of SHHS faculty hold an advanced degree. SHHS teachers use a variety of strategies to inspire and engage their students in the highest level of thinking around subject matter, self awareness, and the world around them. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING PHILOSOPHY Students receive grades in scheduled academic courses as a reflection of their performance on cumulative assessments. Assessments are varied, reflecting high expectations and standards of content mastery and communication skills in written and presentational form, as appropriate for each field of study. The school calculates both a weighted and unweighted GPA, with IBDP, honors, and AP courses receiving an extra grade point. The unweighted GPA is the official grade of record. Given the rigorous curriculum taken by all students and the relatively small size of each grade level, SHHS does not rank students. *As of the 2017-2018 academic year, SHHS uses a flat grading system, without the addition of +/- in the transcript. Historically, the school has not calculated +/- into the GPA, leaving the mathematical calculation of the overall GPA unchanged. ACADEMIC SCHEDULE SHHS follows a block schedule that rotates eight classes over a two-day period. All students enroll in six academic classes; a seventh elective class may be added in an additional or particular field of interest.
