In my scholarship and my pedagogy I find myself continually returning to concepts, theories, and methods I learned from Nicole Tonkovich, whose intellectual rigor and insightful, detailed feedback has made my work and teaching far stronger than it would’ve been without her input. Thanks to her, I will never again use the phrase “the way in which.” Rosemary George guided and encouraged me as my academic focus transitioned from trauma in children’s literature to the geographies of children’s literature. Her graduate course on transnational literature planted the seeds of what became this dissertation’s second chapter. Michael Davidson worked extensively and generously with me as I developed the fourth chapter. His thoughtful suggestions helped direct my writing towards a productive place, and his teaching practices have been an important model for my own. Rebecca Plant’s willingness to make herself available and to provide an important outside socio-historical perspective to this work on literature has helped this process be more effective and far smoother than it might have otherwise been. I am grateful to all four for their generosity of time and knowledge. The unfailing and tireless efforts of my chair, Seth Lerer, have been key to the completion of this dissertation. I owe more than I can say both professionally and personally to our conversations over the last three years, which were always intellectually stimulating and universally enjoyable. His unflagging faith in me and my abilities propelled this project from prospectus to defense. Thanks are also due to a community of scholars, particularly in the children’s literature field, who have welcomed me with open arms and equally open minds. I have benefited in countless ways from the guidance, friendship, and support of June Cummins, Joe Sutliff Sanders, Jerry Griswold, Phil Nel, Karin Westman, Kenneth Kidd, Lee Talley, Dawn Sardella-Ayres, and Jill Coste, among many others. Tom Lutz, whose work on American literary regionalism arguably forms the backbone of this dissertation’s critical framework, kindly spent an afternoon with me discussing the intersections of childhood and regional fictions, and my arguments are stronger for his suggestions. The Children’s Literature Association awarded me the Hannah Beiter Grant in 2012 for research in the Vivian Burnett Collection of Frances Hodgson Burnett at Princeton University. I also received a fellowship from the UCSD Division of Arts and Humanities in 2011, which enabled me to travel to the University of Guelph for research in the L.M. Montgomery archives. I am grateful to ChLA and UCSD for their support. My friends and loved ones have sustained me tirelessly throughout my graduate career. Even though it’s my job to find the right words, I can’t seem to locate any that accurately communicate my gratitude for their faith, energy, and affection. The friends who have contributed in small and large ways are too numerous to detail here, but Clare Rolens deserves special mention. Our in-depth, impromptu discussions and late-night chats over the last three years have gotten me over more writing impasses than she knows. My partner, Jack Hernandez, has contributed in hugely important ways to the conditions that made this dissertation possible. She’s cooked for me regularly and ix without complaint, made sure I left the house every now and then, proofread my writing, patiently listened to my frustrations, and cheered my successes. Most importantly, she’s made my life a brighter, more beautiful place through her wonderful presence. I am so thankful to know and love her. Finally, my parents, Harold Slater and Deborah Simons, for whom the word “appreciation” is shamefully inadequate. My mother read to me every night from infancy to adolescence, and is largely responsible for my love of literature— specifically children’s literature. Four of the books in this dissertation were ones I first encountered through her voice. I am indebted beyond measure to her for that legacy and for her unflagging willingness, even now, to support me in countless ways. Alongside my mother, my father is my biggest cheerleader, providing me with encouragement, advice, and some much-needed perspective, always helping me to see the forest rather than the trees. His complete faith in me is constantly inspiring and encouraging. Their compassion, work ethic, intellect, unvarying generosity, and unconditional love have participated—more than any other social, political, historical, or geographic force—in the construction of my particular childhood and adulthood. I argue that child characters in major works for children become social actors through engagement with their immediate environments. Formations of childhood and place in these novels are co-constructive; child characters influence the sociospatial development of their locations just as much as their locations influence the sociospatial development of child characters. Yet despite the narrative of accrued agency in these texts, child characters’ actions have important limits that complicate a linear reading of passivity to agency. The convergence of childhood

    Lunar Perturbations – How Did We Get from Goodnight Moon to Go the F**k to Sleep?: Margaret Wise Brown and Bedtime Parody Sandy Hudock Colorado State University-Pueblo From an Audi commercial to celebrating the end of the second Bush presidency to the ghost of Mama Cass presiding over a dead Keith Moon, to the ubiquity of the iPad, Good Night Moon has been and no doubt will continue to be parodied or invoked for generations to come. Songwriters reference it, the television show The Wire gives an urban twist to its constant refrain of “good night-----“ with “good night, po-pos, good night hoppers, good night hustlers…” What makes this story so much a part of the collective consciousness, a veritable cultural meme? How did Margaret Wise Brown’s life and her influence in children's publishing result in the longstanding enchantment of Good Night Moon? Recent political and cultural parodies of the go to bed genre all ultimately hearken back to this one simple story painted in green and orange, and the intrinsic comfort it provides to children as a go to bed ritual. Born in New York in 1910 to a wealthy family, Brown was a middle child whose parents’ many moves within the Long Island area required that she change schools four times while growing up, including a stint at a Swiss boarding school. As a child, she made up stories (in her family, a polite way of saying she told lies) and then challenged her siblings to look up the answers in the multi-volume Book of Knowledge, for which she later penned two entries on writing for small children.

    Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom.

Abstract This dissertation uses a feminist cultural materialist approach that draws on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Luce Irigaray to examine the neglected genre of postwar-Cold War American teen girl romance novels, which I call “female junior novels.” Written between 1942 and the late 1960s by authors such as Betty Cavanna, Maureen Daly, Anne Emery, Rosamond du Jardin, and Mary Stolz, these texts create a kind of hieroglyphic world, where possession of the right dress or the proper seat in the malt shop determines a girl’s place within an entrenched adolescent social hierarchy.

    Obscene Gestures: Sexual Transgression and Late Twentieth-Century American Political Culture Patrick Scott Lawrence, PhD University of Connecticut, 2016 Tracing a cultural history from the 1970s to the 1990s, Obscene Gestures places popular and legal notions of obscenity in conversation with anti-consumerist and anti-capitalist resistance movements, women of color feminism, and LGBTQ activism. Since the 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Miller v. California, obscenity discourse has policed the shape of the nation by marking non-normative bodies as objectionable. The dissertation’s study of the cultural artifacts this discourse concerns opens by situating the history of literary obscenity alongside the key theories of sexuality, power, race, and knowledge. The first body chapter links the Miller ruling with 1970s-era neoconservative policies by considering some of the decade’s major novels, including Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow (1973), revealing a home- front cultural politics that stymied dissent by classing as out of bounds many forms of political speech, including Huynh Cong Ut’s 1972 photo The Terror of War. Chapter Two builds upon the polarization this moment caused via an analysis of the feminist battles over pornography in the early 1980s. I juxtapose figures on both sides of this debate with works by women of color, such as Alice Walker’s The Color Purple (1983), that address the histories of embodiment that this debate tended to obscure. The occlusion of race in organizing around pornography parallels the role of possessive individualism in justifying racial wealth disparities during the Reagan administration, which the third chapter highlights. Working in the shadow of the 1986 Meese Commission report, this chapter interprets neoliberal economic policies as an enactment of racial indifference through the metaphors of sex and violence in The Bonfire of the Vanities (1987) and American Psycho (1990).
