Sultanbeyli Belediyesi Encümen Üyeleri Sultanbeyli Belediye Meclis Üyeleri MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK RECEP TAYYİP ERDOĞAN CUMHURBAŞKANI BAŞKANDAN Değerli Hemşehrilerim, Tarihsel künyesinde “İstanbul Fethi’nin başladığı yer” sıfatını taşıyan Sultanbeylimizde gelecek nesillere; doğamızdan, değerlerimizden, modern, sağlıklı ve huzurlu bir kent bırakma ilkemizden vazgeçmeden, hayata geçirdiğimiz eserleri bırakmak adına çaba gösterdik. Accepted 22 October, 2009 For years, ecologists who have been trying to understand the relationship between the organisms with each other and/or their environments, have carried out their researches sometimes far from civilization, sometimes on a desolate island or in a tropical rainforest. Today, about half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Therefore, most of the ecological problems have been brought to these areas. Nevertheless, in cities, preserving and maintaining natural habitats, providing a place not only to live but also to enjoy and to relax, are possible only by applying the principles and concepts of urban ecology in planning. This study presents the outcomes of unplanned urbanization and possible preventive measures, which could be taken in the Kartal District, Istanbul-Turkey. Moreover, in this study, different kinds of urban habitats within the frontiers of Kartal were described and an inventorial study containing native, exotic and cultivated plant taxa were realized. For this plant inventory of the Kartal District, all the greenery in the area were explored in different seasons. Plant samples were collected, dried, labelled and then determined according to standard herbarium procedures.

Turkey Page 1 of 8 Turkey International Religious Freedom Report 2005 Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the Government generally respects this right in practice; however, the Government imposes some restrictions on Muslim and other religious groups and on Muslim religious expression in government offices and state-run institutions, including universities. There was some deterioration in respect for religious freedom during the reporting period. The Government's Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) initiated a public campaign against Christian missionary activity in the country. High-level government officials made statements depicting missionaries as a threat. There was also an increase in anti-Christian media coverage. Threats and vandalism against Christians and church facilities increased. In addition, some Muslims, Christians, and Baha'is faced some restrictions and occasional harassment for alleged proselytizing or holding unauthorized meetings. The State continued to oppose "Islamic fundamentalism." Authorities continued their broad ban on wearing Muslim religious dress in government facilities, including universities, schools, and workplaces. The generally tolerant relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom in principle; however, a sharp debate continued over the country's definition of "secularism," the proper role of religion in society, and the potential influence of the country's small minority of Islamists. According to the general perception, Turkish identity is based on the Turkish language and the Islamic faith. Religious minorities say they are effectively blocked from careers in state institutions, a claim supported in a report by a government human rights body. Christians, Baha'is, and some Muslims faced societal suspicion and mistrust, and more radical Islamist elements continued to express anti-Semitic sentiments.

  • The Educational Opportunities and Challenges of Syrian Refugee Students in Turkey: Temporary Education Centers and Beyond
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Sabanci University Research Database JULY 2016 | IPC-MERCATOR POLICY BRIEF IPC–MERCATOR POLICY BRIEF THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF SYRIAN REFUGEE STUDENTS IN TURKEY: TEMPORARY EDUCATION CENTERS AND BEYOND Bülent Aras and Salih Yasun Executive Summary This policy paper assesses the educational opportunities and challenges of Syrian refugees in Turkey and evaluates the role of Temporary Education Centers (TEC) in integrating Syrian students into the Turkish educational system. It is expected that about 65% of Syrians will remain in Turkey even after the war concludes, approximately 572,000 of which are children.1 The integration of such a large number of students will be a critical component for Turkey’s development trajectory. For this study, we have interviewed the leaders of 12 TECs located in four socio-economically diverse districts in Istanbul as well as bureaucrats and one NGO leader. We have observed the opportunities of students to access education as well as the quality of the educational software and hardware as defined in the literature. In light of our findings, we have provided assessments with recommendations. The goals of this study have been to help policy makers evaluate the current effects of refugee education policies on the integration process, to design the most effective policy interventions, and to serve as a guide to local administrators and NGOs in understanding and responding to the needs of Syrian refugee students. In addition, we hope that our study serves as a guide to leaders, local administrators, and NGOs in all countries around the world for developing mechanisms that can provide accessible and high quality education for refugees.
