The 2011-12 Texas Southern Tigers - Post Season Preview - SWAC TOURNAMENT FINAL

This is Texas Southern’s fourth consecutive trip to the SWAC Championship tournament under head coach Tony Harvey. The Tigers have a 3-3 tournament record since 2009, with one fi nal round appearence (2010). Last season, TSU won the regular season SWAC Championship and received the program’s fi rst invitation to the NIT Tournament where they competed against Colorado.

The Tigers will face Mississippi Valley on Saturday, March 10th at 7:00pm in the Finals of the 2012 Tigers’ SWAC Tournament Record Since 1990 SWAC Championship Tournament. The game will be live on ESPNU. TSU beat Alabama A&M is the quarter-fi nals (78-62) and Alcorn in the semi-fi nals (60-55) to advance. Texas Southern lost to 2009-10 L TSU 38 vs. Ark. Pine Bluff 50 MVSU twice this season. The fi rst loss was in overtime in Houston (77-69) and the second was on a 2002-03 W TSU 77 vs. Alcorn 68 last-second shot in Itta Bena, MS (56-53). Omar Strong averaged 15.5 points in the series. He led the 1997-98 L TSU 57 vs. Prairie View 59 Tigers with 16 points in game one and 15 points in game two. Madarious Gibbs averaged 13 points 1994-95 W TSU 75 vs. Mississippi Valley 62 and DaQuan Joyner averaged 6.5 rebounds in the series. TSU was out rebounded (89-81) in the two 1993-94 W TSU 70 vs. Jackson State 67 games and they game up 23 second chance points. The Tigers had 13 second change points in the series. 1990-91 L TSU 66 vs. Jackson State 70

Coach Harvey is 3-5 against Mississippi Valley. TSU last met MVSU in the SWAC Tournament Finals in 1995 when the #1 seed Tigers defeated the #2 seed Delta Devils 75-62. Texas Southern has been in six SWAC Tournament Final games since 1990 with a record of 3-3. The Tigers have captured four SWAC Tournament Titles.

THE TEAM TSU’s main returning players include 2011 SWAC Freshman of the Year Lawrence Johnson-Danner who was also a Mid-Major Freshman All-American. Johnson- Danner averaged 13.1 points a game. Daniel King is the top returning rebounder. Last season, he averaged 5.5 boards a game along with 5 points per game. Timothy Price was the big man in middle. Price averaged 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 points a game, but also was second on the team in blocked shots with 27. Aaron Clayborn is back on the fl oor after missing last season because of an injury. Clayborn was the 2010 SWAC Freshman of the Year. His defensive toughness and scoring ability will help the Tigers as they fi ll the voids left by Travele Jones and Kevin Galloway...who combined accounted for 27 points and 13 rebounds for TSU each game.

This season, guard Omar Strong has emerged as scoring threat for the Tigers. The 5-9 transfer from Cecil Community College averages 12.7 points a game. Freshman guard Madarious Gibbs stepped out as a leader on the court. He played in 30 games this season with six starts. Gibbs averages 6.4 points a game and 1.83 assists. Junior forward Fred Sturdivant is also making his presence felt as he’s averaging 9.3 points per game and 5.7 rebounds. Sturdivant is an aggressive player who excites the crowd with his dunks. Coach Harvey says this year’s team is mentally tougher than the 2011 SWAC Championship team.
