LETTERS OF WELCOME

Please consider writing a letter of welcome for our RCIA candidate, Brittany Thomason. Your letter may be placed in the collection box or dropped off in the parish office no later than Holy Thursday, March 30.

We, the heartfelt community of St. Elizabeth Seton Church, are prepar- ing to welcome our RCIA candidate, Brittany Thomason, at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Since early Fall, Brittany has been meeting with mem- bers of our parish, to ask more about our Catholic faith. Brittany is like all of us, who have come together by the power of the Spirit to become members of our .

My name is Brittany Thomason…

I grew up in Oak Lawn and have spent the past 11 years in healthcare. I was a nursing assistant and recently took a position as an Endoscopy Tech (which thrills me to stand right beside the doctor in procedures). I have always loved working with patients and now I get to be hands on in their direct care and health care experiences. A little over three years ago, I met my fiancé, Michael Dudek, who proposed this past August. We recently bought a house in Orland Hills and we have two pets, a dog and a special needs cat. They are our loves until we are ready to add to the family in our next chapter. Growing up, my mother always wanted my sister and I to realize faith on our own. She wanted us to find God within ourselves and to choose which religious denomination suited our individual needs best. My grand- mother would bring us to Catholic Mass but I rarely remember what it was like being so young. As I grew older, I got to see God’s acts of kind- ness in others and was to figure out for myself who I wanted to be and what path I wanted to follow. In college, I took a World Religions class which taught me a lot about the different beliefs that exist in our world today. I would attend Mass with friends and even joined a youth group during high school—but nothing gave me that push that I was longing for. We experience the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events, and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until Easter Day. Included in the service are scripture readings, solemn hymns, music and prayer. It will begin with a candle procession, a candle for each reading, plus a white Christ candle. Each reader concludes their reading by putting out one candle until all are extinguished. Then the Christ candle is carried out of the church, leaving the congregation in near total darkness—and near total devastation. At this point, the service ends and people leave in silence. What Is Holy Week?

We will begin Holy Week with the commemoration of our Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem...

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord With a crowd of people waving palm branches, throwing their cloaks down before his donkey and shouting loud hurrahs of “Hosanna to the Lord!,” Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem. Jesus not only is depicted as a king while riding on a donkey, but he fulfills an Old Testament Prophecy, that God will reign over all the earth (Zec 14:4-9). In the liturgy celebration of Palm Sun- day, we participate in this entrance by waving our palms and singing “Hosana to the Lord!” The ancient liturgy also calls this special day, , because at the point of the Gospel, we listen to the Passion account of how Christ died, was be- trayed, was crucified, was denied, and forsaken. It is on this day, that the Church enters into a week-long period of prayer and final preparation as we approach the Easter festivities.

Wednesday of Holy Week [Tenebrae Service] The focus for this night “Tenebrae” (Latin for shadows) service, is to re-create Christ’s spiritual light being diminished through listening of events through six short Gospel readings: rejection of Jesus’ teaching in the temple; the plot- ting against Jesus when he cured a man on the Sabbath; rejection of the person who couldn’t give up his fortune; the rejection Jesus faced after feeding the 5,000; Judas’ betrayal; and Peter’s denial. We experience the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of the events, and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until Easter Day. Included in the service are scripture readings, solemn hymns, music and prayer. The Tenebrae Service will begin with a candle procession, a candle for each reading, plus a white Christ candle. Each reader concludes their reading by putting out one candle until all are extinguished. Finally, the Christ candle is carried out of the church, leaving the congregation in near total darkness—and near total devasta- tion. At this point, the service ends and people leave in silence. Triduum [Three Day Celebration] The Triduum, is the three central holy days in the tradition of our faith. Even though they are three separate days, in a sense, they are rather three parts of one liturgical celebration: beginning Holy Thursday evening and continuing through the end of the Easter Masses. In sign and symbol, we remember and keep the Vigil of Our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resur- rection — we celebrate and participate in the Paschal Mystery which is the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Holy Thursday The Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the first celebration that occurs in the Triduum. The main focus or symbol of this celebration is the Institution of the Eucharist, the Priest- hood, and the commandment to love and serve one another (the summary of the latter). Christ has a final meal with his disciples, and on this night, he institutes the Eucharist by telling his disciples, “Do this in memory of me.” As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, the Eucharist is the center of our faith. Jesus also takes the initiative to wash the feet of his disciples, not only instituting the Priesthood, but showing what it means to be a priest — to serve others. At this liturgy these symbols play out during the Washing of the Feet. The priest washes the feet (in non-COVID times) of some of our parishioners. This symbolizes servitude and reminds us that we are all a nation of priests by our Baptism. By our Baptism we are obliged to exercise our “Baptismal Priesthood” by serving others and symbolically — washing their feet. The second half of the Mass (particularly the last part), we accompany our Lord by spending time with him in prayer. The Eucharist is exposed to all which symbolizes Christ’s full presence: the gift of the Eucharist nourishes us and strengthens our faith to be Christ-like to the world. These symbols commend one another: the Eucharist enables us to be Christ-like, allowing us to exercise our “Baptismal Priesthood” to others by serving them. We see this encounter at every Mass. Our Ministers of Care are called out from the congregation to be commissioned. They are then entrusted with the Eucharist to take to the homebound. Our Ministers of Care are:

Sylvia Arcos Martha Cisneros Dcn. Frank Gildea Kathy Kocher Eric Ondoy Jane Bessee Debbie Davisson Terri Hanlon Karen Kosinski Pat Orozco Gloria Burback Bev DeJonge Paulee Havlin Frank Mankowski Laura Rodgers Kocsis Maria Castro Mary Terese Galka Joann Janiak Steve Michalek Thomas Scorzo Diane Ceglarski Maria Garcia Jeannine Klomes Claudia Nolan Anna and Gene Talley

Good Friday The liturgy on Good Friday is divided into three parts: Liturgy of the Word; Veneration of the Cross; and Reception of Holy Communion. On this day there is no Mass. This is considered a service, and it is the second part to a three-day celebra- tion. The service begins in silence as our priests walk in and prostrate themselves which is a symbol of total surrender to God. This surrender expresses the symbol of total obedience that Christ gave to His Father. Since the priest acts in the person of Christ, this symbol of obedience comes alive in the prostration. The Liturgy of the Word contains the readings and John’s account of the Passion. The next part of the ser- vice is the Veneration of the Cross. On this day, the “Cross” is held at a higher esteem than the Eucharist. The cross symbolizes the promise that Christ gave us, that through his Body and Blood, we have inherited eternal life. The raising of the “Cross” and our veneration, reminds us of Christ giving us his Body and Blood, and it was only through this “Cross” that our redemption could happen. The “Cross” reminds us of what we participate in every Sunday — Christ’s sacrifice. The Good Friday service ends with Communion, hosts that were consecrated the day before and with a blessing. The priests process out in silence. March 28, 2021 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Page Eleven

Easter Vigil

“This is the night, when Christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld.” — Exultet

The Easter Vigil is the mother of all vigils, and it is the last part of a three day celebration. The Mass begins in darkness and with one candle lit: our . This candle is the Light of Christ that destroyed death and rose to new life, giving us the promise that we will one day too, rise after death. During the Vigil, we listen to additional readings because of the heavy symbolism of this spe- cial night. The readings recount from God Creating Heaven and Earth, to the promise of our sins being washed away by the waters of Baptism. After the readings, our entire congregation joins in song, singing the “Gloria,” as we presently see that Christ has Risen from the dead. What follows is the fulfillment of the promise of rising to new life in the RCIA candidates who are to be Baptized. Baptism is the actual participation of dying and rising with Christ, which is why our RCIA candidates are clothed in white after their Baptism. We then in celebration, conclude our three-day Triduum with the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is a continuation of the Easter Vigil which lasts about eight days. This is called the of Easter. Sunday is considered the Lord’s Day: the day that Christ rose from the dead and fulfilled the promise of eternal life. This we celebrate every Sunday, not just Easter Sunday. The Mass is a re-presentation of what was lived out through the Easter Tridu- um. Easter Sunday is an invitation to continue living this mystery throughout the year and not cease to participate in it.

Every Sunday should be a personal encounter with the empty tomb and have the same joy and attitude Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary. the mother of James, had when they went back to tell Jesus’ disciples that he is alive — only we do it with the world! Alleluia! Page Twelve PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD March 28, 2021

Celebrate and join us to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in the church on Saturday, April 10, at 6pm and Sunday, April 11, at 12:30pm (after Masses). Please register for the selected Mass at www.steseton.com.

P J P II made the announcement in his homily at the canonization of Saint Faustina in April of 2000. There, he declared “It is important that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church, will be called ’Divine Mercy Sunday.’”

THE DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE AND DEVOTION

The message of the Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us — all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it low through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC:

Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting A of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and the whole world.

Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it low through us to others. B He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.

Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are C dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.

THE DIVINE MERCY NOVENA OF CHAPLETS A novena is typically nine days of prayer in preparation of a celebration of a feast day. This novena starts on Good Friday and concludes on Divine Mercy Sunday (First Sunday after Easter.)

INTENTIONS For each of the nine days of prayer, our Lord gave Saint Faustina a different intention:  All mankind, especially sinners;  the souls of priests and religious;  all devout and faithful souls;  those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus;  the souls who have separated themselves from the Church;  the meek and humble souls of little children;  the souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy;  the souls detained in Purgatory;  and the souls who have become lukewarm.

“I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death.”

WHAT CAN YOU DO? You, too, can participate in the novena of prayer for these intentions and others, especially by praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and participating in the Divine Mercy prayers on Divine Mercy Sunday. You can also participate weekly in praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet each Wednesday after the 9am Mass. March 28, 2021 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Page Thirteen

The Chaplet Of The Divine Mercy

HOW TO RECITE THE CHAPLET

The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer.

1. Sign of the Cross

2. Opening Prayers (optional) You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!

3. Pray Our Father

4. Pray the Hail Mary

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

It’s Holy Week—the most important week of our faith. Jesus enters Jerusalem and the people receive him triumphantly. But in a matter of days, the crowd that acclaims him as a king, will be the same crowd that demands that he be crucified.

When Jesus was apprehended, his disciples fled. Aer the trial, he was flogged, spat upon and stripped of his clothing. While hanging on the cross, Jesus was thirsty—he was given vinegar to drink. This story is a reminder to us of atudes we may sll hold today. We are members of the same human family, but we can turn a blind eye to the suffering of our most vulnerable sisters and brothers. But Jesus reminds us that what we do to the lile ones, we do to him. Throughout history, many have understood what it means to be merciful toward people who are suffering. On Jesus’ journey to Calvary, a bold woman moved by love wiped his face. A bystander, forced to help carry the cross, was forever transformed by the ex- perience. At the foot of the cross, the beloved disciple promised to care for Jesus’ mother as his own. Aer the crucifixion, a wealthy man offered his own new tomb to bury Jesus. These are unquesonable examples of the works of mercy—of hearts showing As we prepare for Easter, we reflect on how our sacrifices and compassion to those in need. And that is acons might transform another’s life. We pray for the grace to what Jesus expects of us—that we offer our realize that by sharing the cross of others, we become servants of hands and hearts to others so that with him, salvaon.
