    A Conversation with Barney Rosset by Win McCormack its heyday, the most influential alternative book press in the history of American publishing. Grove—and Grove’s magazine, the Evergreen Review, launched in 1957—published, among other writers, most of the French avant-garde of the era, including Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jean Genet, and Eugene Ionesco; most of the American Beats of the fifties, including Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and Allen Ginsberg; and most of the key radical political thinkers of the six- ties, including Malcolm X, Frantz Fanon, and Regis Debray. He pub- lished Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Godot after it had been scorned by more mainstream publishers—and sold two million copies of it in the bargain. He made a specialty of Japanese literature, and intro- duced the future Nobel Prize winner Kenzaburo Oe to an American public. He published the first unexpurgated edition of D. H. Law- A CONVERSATION WITH rence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover and the first edition of Henry Miller’s BARNEY ROSSET Tropic of Cancer in America, partly to deliberately provoke the censors. Through his legal victories in the resulting obscenity cases, as well as in one brought on by I Am Curious (Yellow), a sexually explicit Swedish Win McCormack documentary film he distributed, he was probably more responsible than any other single individual for ending the censorship of litera- ture and film in the United States.     Venezia Arti [online] ISSN 2385-2720 Vol. 26 – Dicembre 2017 [print] ISSN 0394-4298 Le memorie di un Film Notfilm di Ross Lipman Martina Zanco Abstract It’s been five decades since Film was first shown at the 26th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. Yet the 1965 short film, directed by Alain Schneider and based on the only script written for the big screen by Samuel Beckett, enjoys a new wave of interest. Digitally restored in 4k by filmmaker, archivist, preservationist and performer Ross Lipman, Film has began to tour the world once again, showing in many theaters, festivals and Cinematheques thanks to the tireless work of newly founded distribution company Reading Bloom and, well established, Milestone Films. This has re-opened discussion on the enigmatic short feature that, inspired from the metaphysical doctrine of irish philosopher George Berkeley, esse est percipi, sees an ‘Object’ (that is, the main character portrayed by Buster Keaton ) shadowed by an ‘Eye’. The main interest though, is in part due to the kino-essay, which is not a simple documentary, by Ross Lipman. In Notfilm, a documentary showed after Film at every screening, the director shows us the unseen cuts, unreleased material, photos, notes and audio recordings he rediscovered during the restoration process of the short film that raise an array of new, challenging questions (is Beckett Keaton alter ego?). Furthermore, this cine-essay seems to have another hidden layer, seemingly more ambitious and personal, that tries to go beyond Film itself. This is an aspect that, I think, is worth investigating.

Preliminary Note: Looking back upon the jagged landscape of literary creation in America in the Twentieth Century, it strikes us that several of the peaks that still catch the light were under serious threat, in the name of "good taste" and "decency," and through the action of government itself, never to receive the light of day in the first place. Allen Ginsberg's Howl is one such peak. So is William S. Burroughs Naked Lunch. So are Nabokov's Lolita, Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer. So is the Irish Himalaya itself, Ulysses. Yet, before we shake our heads in disgust and disbelief, let's not lose sight of the fact that it was tools of the refashioned American Constitution that were the weapon that, in the hands of freedom-minded lawyers, judges, intellectuals and publishers, were able to fight the repressive forces of government and conservative pressure groups. Such a lawyer was Edward de Grazia, who was at the forefront from the fifties onward, leading the shock-troups of the freedom fighters. My - he even served as a lawyer for Aristophanes, when Lysistrata was banned in the days of the Vietnam War! He fought for Lenny Bruce. He fought for I'm Curious - Yellow. The abundant freedom of expression secured during these decades is due to the struggle of a relatively small number of people (not that they didn't have a large, silent support).

Poet Allen Ginsberg called Barney (Barnet Lee) Rosset (b. 1922) a “publisher-hero.” As owner of Grove Press, Rosset put into print authors no one else would; he also published such notable Beat Genera- tion writers as Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and William Burroughs. He introduced American readers to Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Kenzaburo Oe, and many others. Rosset is perhaps best known for defending freedom of expression and pushing the limits of cen- sorship in America. He fought and won landmark legal battles to publish uncensored versions of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer . Less well known is that Rosset was an Army photographer in the China-Burma-India theater dur- ing World War II. In December 1944, he documented the Chinese Army during a major Japanese of- fensive and was later sent to film the expected Japanese surrender in Shanghai. A special exhibition of his photographs from this period was held in New York in 2002. Rosset discussed his time in the U.S. Army and his work as a photographer in China with Bob Bergin in New York City in June 2010. Bergin, a former U.S. Foreign Service officer, writes on the histo- ry of aviation in Southeast Asia and China, the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), and military opera- tions in the China-Burma-India WWII theater.

    Rosset Estate In East Hampton Hits Market For $6.5 Million By Tom Clavin | June 8, 2016 Barney Rosset was such a legendary figure that the property on Hands Creek Road in East Hampton where he lived for many years is still known in both publishing and real estate circles as the Rosset Estate. While it is highly unlikely visitors will discover an uncensored version of “Lady Chatterly’s Lover” that had fallen behind a bookcase, the house and grounds still reek of the legacy of a giant in book publishing. The property—just listed by Town and Country Real Estate at just less than $6.5 million—is quite remarkable. It includes 13.5 acres of gardens and open meadows (upon which Rosset used to ride his tractor), tennis court, swimming pool, separate garage, and is surrounded by preserved land. The 4-bedroom, 5,500-square-foot house has en-suite baths, a chef’s kitchen, four fireplaces, a library (of course!), upper-level decks, and for the adventurous, a rooftop hot tub. Downtown East Hampton is only 2 miles to the south. It is not a stretch to say that Mr. Rosset—who died at 89 in 2012—was a big reason why there are so many book publishing people on the South Fork. More than just moving here, Mr. Rosset almost headquartered his company in East Hampton. His life spanned what is now recognized as the golden age of book publishing, when good and great writers were nurtured by their editors and many publishers were independent companies.
