Ranging from the thought of first generation Russian emigres to contemporary Eastern Orthodox theologians, the essays in Tradition Alive point toward a positive theology that is convinced of the immanence of the Holy Spirit, despite a world torn apart by revolution, violence, and despair. The contributors profess their faith in the transforming presence of Christ and the divine dimensions of the church by looking to the meaning and power of tradition in the practices of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. By focusing on the Orthodox Church's ecclesiastical and liturgical character, the authors emphasize the living character of the Christian tradition. With many contributions difficult, if not impossible, to access until now, Tradition Alive presents a brave and distinctive effort to enliven Western theology by looking to the theology of the East. Michael Plekon is a professor in the department of sociology/ anthropology and in the religion and culture program at Baruch College, City University of New York. He is also an ordained priest in the Orthodox Church in America. .

We would like to update you about the fall meeting and provide important links to the projects we have undertaken. 1. The Pandemic and Holy Communion Survey and Webinar: Our previous letter explained that, given the unusual circumstances of the pandemic, and the diversity of thought and parish practices regarding the manner of worship in the pandemic, OTSA sponsored a survey on this topic. The survey went out to all the clergy of Orthodox Churches that are members of the Assembly of Bishops, and we had an excellent response with over 600 clergy participating. In addition, OTSA organized a webinar entitled “The Coronovirus (COVID-19) and Communion Practice in the Orthodox Church,” which ran on August 22, with presentations by Orthodox faithful who are distinguished scientists and theologians. The online symposium drew over 100 participants. BEFORE THE STORM: KIERKEGAARD'S THEOLOGICAL PREPARATION FOR THE ATTACK ON THE CHURCH Michael Plekon Kierkegaard's public attack on the Church in Denmark in the last years of his life stands in marked contrast to so much else he wrote. The vehemence of the attack has remained perplexing, also the extent to which it was a rejection of abuses or of significant elements of Christianity. The essays seeks to examine an earlier stage of his developing criticism in order to better understand the radical writings of the last year and Kierkegaard's motives and intentions in the attack. Therefore Christ as the prototype (Forbilledet) must be advanced, but not in order to alarm-yet it is perhaps an altogether superfluous concern that anyone could be alarmed by Christianity nowadays but in any case not in order to alarm; we ought to learn that from the experience of earlier times.

The cries and banners with the message subito santo—“a saint very soon”— during the funeral of Pope John Paul II come to mind. This same John Paul II was responsible during his tenure for creating more saints in the Roman Catholic Church than any other pope. Perhaps too the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta tells us a great deal. The almost immediate emer- gence of her veneration and a very swift start of the process for her canon- ization are signs of this fascination. For years she was before us as a kind of “living saint,”there on our television screens and in media photos, like John Paul II.

The last band of free thinkers (Feuerbach and all related to him) has attacked or tackled the matter far more clearly than formerly, for if you look more closely, you will see that they actually have taken upon themselves the task of defending Christianity against contem- porary Christians. The point is that established Christendom is demoralized, in the profoundest sense all respect for Christianity's existential commitments has been lost ... Now Feuerbach is saying : No, wait a minute-if you are going to be allowed to go on living as you are living, then you also have to admit that you are not Christians ... it is wrong of established Christendom to say that Feuerbach is attacking Christianity; it is not true, he is attacking the Christians by demonstrating that their lives do not correspond to the teachings of Christianity ... What Christianity needs for certain is traitors .. (JP 6523) To many familiar with the early Kierkegaard's brilliant dialectics, his anatomy of the self and his philosophical and theological innovations, the polemical negativity of his later years has remained enigmatic .' The Kierkegaard of such frequently read works as Eitherl0r, Fear and Trembling, the Philosophical Fragments and their Concluding Unscientific Postscript, among others, seems radically transformed in both the published works and the labyrinthine journal pages of the years 1848-55 . Most especially, in his public attack on the Danish church and society in 1854-55, Kierkegaard does indeed appear to be a `traitor' to much of what he had respected and written in the previous years, though traitorously faithful, he claimed, to New Testament Christianity .
