Missouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, joining the league in the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league expansion that brought three institutions into the league. The GLVC, which is constituted of 15 institutions for the 2009-10 season, made its name as a power in NCAA Division II but has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division II leagues.

The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in several sports such as men’s and women’s soccer, women’s and .

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Division II level. The conference expanded again prior to the 2009-10 season when the University of Illinois-Springfi eld and Maryville University become members of the GLVC and will become a 16-team conference in the fall of 2011 when William Jewell University joins the league.

The league’s staff has also increased along the way, with the GLVC hiring its fi rst full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s fi rst full-time sports information director was added in the summer of 2006.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discus- sions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois Uni- versity Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville left the conference after the 2007-08 season.

The conference expanded to include women’s basketball in 1983-84 and immediately established a women’s-men’s doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games primarily on Thursdays and Saturdays in November, December, January and February.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (Wisconsin-

Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern MINER BASEBALL Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst/William Jewell), Springfi eld, Mo. Campus overview

Missouri S&T is one of the top technological research universities in the nation. Surrounded by Ozarks scenery (Rolla is about 100 miles west of St. Louis), the campus is ac- cessible, safe and friendly. Known for its engineering programs, S&T also offers degrees in the sciences, liberal arts, humanities and business. About 6,300 students are currently enrolled in classes, making S&T big enough to accommodate a diverse population but small enough for individuals to stand out.

S&T students are expected to actively participate in the processes of getting an education, whether that means joining a student design team, participating in intercollegiate athletics, conducting research with faculty members, helping to assure safe drinking water in a Central American community, or planning activities for the campus’s next St. Pat’s celebration. HEAD COACH: Todd DeGraffenreid ASSISTANT COACH: Brian Rickert MINER BASEBALL

10 2010 SEASON PREVIEW

Missouri S&T’s baseball team has been inching closer to a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, staying in contention until the fi nal weekend two years ago and then to the fi nal day last season.

For head coach Todd DeGraffenreid, the hope is that the 2010 season is the one where the Miners fi nally get over that barrier to play at GCS Ballpark in May.

With a solid pitching rotation in place along with an experienced lineup, the Miners are optimistic that they will be able to compete for a spot in the tournament this season.

“I think our pitching is going to give us a chance to be competitive in every game,” DeGraffenreid said. “Andrew Page was one of the top starting pitchers in the GLVC last season, David Birkby threw the ball very well at the end of the year and has continued to do so during the preseason and we have some other young pitchers who we feel are very capable of fi lling the other roles on our staff.”

Page, a senior, earned second-team All-GLVC honors last season after going 6-3 with a team-best 3.18 earned run average and a school record 82 . He will head up a staff that will include fellow senior Birkby, who won four games as a starter during his sophomore year, then found a niche in the bullpen last year and saved four Andrew Page earned second-team All-GLVC games for S&T. honors last season after going 6-3 on the hill.

Another returner to the rotation, Drew Pyles, posted a 5.36 ERA as a freshman and will contend for one of the other starting spots along with returner Caleb Lambert and newcomers Nick Johnson and Chris Bowe. Johnson went 5-2 with a sub-fi ve ERA a year ago at Forest Park Community College, while Bowe recorded an 8-2 record and 2.36 ERA for a district championship team at Rolla High School last spring. MINER BASEBALL

In the bullpen, the Miners also have a mix of experience and youth, but some of the newcomers are expected to play key roles. Kyle Robertson, who fanned nearly one hitter per inning at Granite City High School, Tim Garvin, who averaged more than a strikeout per inning pitched last season at Parkway South and Nolan Korn will join several veterans in a deep bullpen.

Returners Alex Dunn, Matt Walker, Zac Helton and lefty Zach Gronek, who split time between the starting rota- tion and bullpen, will help anchor the pen along with redshirt freshman Harry Dunsford.

While the pitching staff appears to be in good shape, the big question surrounding the lineup is trying to fi ll the gap in the middle. Last season’s 3-4-5 hitters – Eaf Redden, Thomas McCormick and Cody Bass – have all gradu- ated after combining for 187 hits, 10 home runs and 103 runs driven in during the 2009 campaign.

“There’s no question that those are going to be big shoes to fi ll,” DeGraffenreid said. “But what I like about our team is that I believe we’re going to be a resourceful team and fi nd ways to score runs. Our team speed is not only going to be a benefi t for us offensively, but also on defense.”

The Miners return a veteran group on the infi eld, with Brandon Cogan – S&T’s top returning hitter from a year ago with a .328 average – is expected to start the season at shortstop with two-year starter Louie Joseph back at sec- 11 2010 SEASON PREVIEW

ond base; Joseph hit .298 last year. Sophomore Hunter Scheib is also expected to contend for playing time in the middle infi eld.

Helton returns at fi rst base, where he started 11 times last spring, while Zac Carter is expected to be the open- ing day starter at third base. Another returner, Caleb Smith, will compete for playing time at the corner infi eld spots after missing last season with an injury.

The Miners return just one starter in the outfi eld in Tim Kerouac, where he will be fl anked by a pair of junior college transfers. Matt Kempin, who hit .293 with fi ve home runs at Des Moines Area Community College, will compete for one of the vacant spots along with Ben Pieper, a transfer from Crowder College. Chris Kruppe, who hit .320 in 19 games last season, also fi gures to see playing time in the outfi eld.

Kempin could also see time as the Miners’ designated hitter along with Will Morrison, who batted .318 in his freshman season at S&T.

Drew Davenport, who started in 40 games behind the plate last year and hit .276 with three homers and 22 runs batted in, will share the catching duties with freshman Sam Adams, an all-state performer who hit over .500 at the high school level in each of the last two David Birkby led the Miners in saves a year seasons. ago with four and added 20 strikeouts.
