Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage. -
Goodbye, Preston"
"GOODBYE, PRESTON" by Mark Hopper & Johnny Smith Based on a true story Mark Hopper 1035 N Sweetzer Ave West Hollywood, CA 90069 415-729-6108 [email protected] WGAw Copyright (c) 2010 This screenplay may not be used or reproduced without the express written permission of the author FADE IN: West Hollywood, California, the early 90's. Dusk. Palm trees and weakening sunshine. A pink sky. Camera pans and rests on a building, THE GOLD COAST, a dive gay bar, situated right on Santa Monica Blvd. Camera begins to zoom into doorway. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana starts to play. CUT TO: INT. THE GOLD COAST - NIGHT A typical gay bar scene. Darkened room, loud music, a moderate amount of flashing lights. Loud laughter and the occasional crack of the pool balls can be heard over the din. Various shots of the action: men playing pool, men at the bar drinking, guys along the wall chatting and/or looking standoff-ish. One final pan and the camera rests on RICHIE HAMILTON, a lanky, long-haired white male in his mid 20's. He’s standing along the wall, observing the crowd. It’s his usual tradition. Maybe spot a familiar face, maybe meet someone new, who knows. Richie tilts back his glass of bourbon for the last sip, drinks, then heads to the bar for another cocktail. Just as he crosses the doorway, he almost bumps into PRESTON, who’s entering the establishment. Preston, also in his mid 20's, is dark-haired, slightly rugged and drop dead gorgeous. -

Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. Dinosaur Jr. to Shred the Met, Sep 27
Dinosaur Jr. to Shred The Met, Sep 27 Dinosaur Jr.: (L-R) J Mascis, Lou Barlow, Murph Dinosaur Jr. have been putting out amazing music ever since the original trio of J Mascis, Murph and Lou Barlow got back together in 2005. Four albums have risen from the reunion, with Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not the most recent in August 2016. The evolution of the band since 1984 has Mascis and Barlow both bringing their songwriting talents to the forefront while Murph proves he’s one of the best drummers alive on every track. In an age where underground rock has been searching for its latest identity, Dinosaur Jr. has resurrected and reinvigorated the classic alternative sound. This trio will be taking the stage at The Met in Pawtucket on Sep 27 for what should be a killer time with Detroit’s Easy Action opening things up. I had a talk with Murph ahead of the show about being in fellow Massachusetts band The Lemonheads during the ‘90s, the differences between playing with J and Evan Dando, breaking sticks and what his favorite drum kit is. Rob Duguay (Motif): Dinosaur Jr.’s latest album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not came out a little over a year ago. J Mascis has produced nearly all of Dinosaur Jr.’s records: Is there any difference between working with J as a musician versus J as a producer, or is it all the same? Murph: It’s pretty much the same. When J is in the studio producing and engineering, Lou and I aren’t there. -
