Abstract: A critical review of botanical nomenclature for Anemone patens L. is given based on a rigorous literature analysis. Complete morphological characteristics and karyology of the taxon are compiled using data from the floristic treatments of Europe and North America. The phylogeny of A. patens in relation to a variety of contrasting historical, ecological and evolutionary factors acting through the species range transformation and speciation is elucidated. Keywords: morphological characteristics, chromosome numbers, taxonomic considerations, origin, evolution Introduction Some plants, such as Anemone patens L. sensu lato from the buttercup or crowfoot family (Ranunculaceae), with very broad geographical range, highly expressed polymorphism, the existence of numerous transitional forms, convergent evolution, ability to cross and interbreed in a great variety of habitats, may become a nightmare for taxonomists. Arguably, A. patens is one of the most problematic taxa in the genus Anemone L., as far as circumscription and distribution are concerned, which was noted by many authors (e.g. ZÄMELS 1926; TZVELEV 2001). Taxonomic status of A. patens has been widely debated by botanists over a few centuries since the time it was first described by LINNAEUS (1753). -

Marinescu Street, RO-540139 Târgu-Mureş, Romania 2 Mureş County Museum, Natural Science Department, 24 Horea Street, RO-540036 Târgu-Mureş, Romania e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: A principal objective of this study was to summarise the distribution of Veronica species in Romania, where such an inventory has not existed before. Taxa of Veronica genus were identified in 311 plant associations and 36 subassociations framed in 132 alliances. Of the 311 plant associations, 138 are included in various types of NATURA 2000 Habitats. The review of phytosociological data reveals the presence of Veronica taxa in 42 types of Natura 2000 habitats with scientific significance. Some of these Veronica taxa are characteristic species for alliances (i.e. Veronicion baumgartenii Coldea 1991, Veronico officinalis-Quercion Pop 1971) or differential species at plant association level (Veronico baumgartenii-Saxifragetum bryoidis Boşcaiu et al. 1977). Keywords: Veronica genus, Natura 2000 habitats, plant associations Introduction Veronica is considered among the richest genera of the vascular flora of Romania as well as of other European countries. As regards their systematic position, Veronica species were included until recently in the Scrophularioideae (Antirrhinoideae) subfamily, Scrophulariaceae family, Scrophulariales order, Asterideae subclass, Magnoliopsida class [7]. Because there are several classification systems for this genus, here we mention three of them, which we consider most recent. -

This broad definition covers bulbs, woody trees and shrubs, cacti, succulents, grasses, ferns, some herbs, and many groundcovers. The popular gardening definition of a perennial, however, refers to those plants which are non-woody, have a root system that lives through the winter from which leaves emerge in the spring and die back to the ground in the fall. Plants of this type are more specifically called herbaceous perennials. The popularity of herbaceous perennials has risen in recent times because they offer a wide variety of forms and sizes, colors and textures and are relatively long-lived. Of particular significance is the fact that they generally fall into the low to moderate maintenance category which many gardeners today value due to limited resources and time. There are hundreds of perennials to choose from and they offer the gardener a good deal of versatility for all areas of the landscape. You can select plants which grow well in wet and dry sites; full sun to shade; deep, fertile to shallow, poor soils. Additionally, many will solve the problems of difficult-to-manage areas like steep embankments, hillsides and rocky sites. History of Perennials The first and most popular period for growing herbaceous perennials was in the later part of the 1800s and early 1900s. At this time, perennials were being used in Europe as border plants outlining naturalized woodland garden areas. -

We stopped en route at the Abbadia Di Fiastra Nature Reserve for an exploration and refreshments. After a coffee and soft drink, we undertook a walk around the perimeter of the park. Several bright green Italian Wall Lizards scuttled across the path and posed unconcernedly on the margins as we made our slow passage past. Numerous singing Blackcaps could be heard, joined by a couple of Nightingales deep within the woodland scrub. The pleasant purring sounds of a few Turtle Doves were joined by the melodious calls of a Golden Oriole, both of which eluded sighting. The temperature along the track was becoming oppressive and, joined with our slow progress, brought about the decision to retreat to the Monastery buildings and a light lunch! Whilst we ate we were able to enjoy the vibrant House Martin colony on the buildings with the Tree Sparrows and Common Redstarts on the rooftops and gutters. -

Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Several studies attempted to pinpoint principles to explain the assembly rules of local communities and disentangle the coexistence mechanisms that ensure the persistence of a high species richness. In this study we examined the influence of pollination interactions on the assemblage of dry grassland communities and in the maintenance of the biodiversity they host. The issue has been addressed from many different perspectives. We found that similarly to habitat filtering and interspecific interactions for abiotic resources, in dry grassland communities interactions for pollination contribute to influence plant species assemblage. We found entomophilous species flowering synchrony to be a key characteristic, which may favour the long lasting maintenance of rare species populations within the community. -

INTERNATIONAL MIRE NEWSLETTER CONSERVATION GROUP issue 2011/4, December 2011 The International Mire Conservation Group (IMCG) is an international network of specialists having a particular interest in mire and peatland conservation. The network encompasses a wide spectrum of expertise and interests, from research scientists to consultants, government agency specialists to peatland site managers. It operates largely through e-mail and newsletters, and holds regular workshops and symposia. For more information: consult the IMCG Website: http://www.imcg.net IMCG has a Main Board of currently 15 people from various parts of the world that has to take decisions between congresses. Of these 15 an elected 5 constitute the IMCG Executive Committee that handles day-to-day affairs. The Executive Committee consists of a Chairman (Piet-Louis Grundling), a Secretary General (Hans Joosten), a Treasurer (Francis Müller), and 2 additional members (Ab Grootjans, Rodolfo Iturraspe). Fred Ellery, Seppo Eurola, Lebrecht Jeschke, Richard Lindsay, Viktor Masing (†), Rauno Ruuhijärvi, Hugo Sjörs (†), Michael Steiner, Michael Succow and Tatiana Yurkovskaya have been awarded honorary membership of IMCG. Editorial This Newsletter is entirely dedicated to the 16th international IMCG Field Symposium, which took place in Slovakia and Poland 4-18 July, 2010.
