Stranraer has a modern leisure centre and well established Primary and Academy schooling. Loch Ree Practice is a friendly, well established training practice, situated in the tranquil semi - rural town of Stranraer. We are seeking an additional Nurse Practitioner to join us in the picturesque south west corner of Scotland. Where in the world? Stranraer is located on the west coast of Scotland in Dumfries & Galloway. Ferry links to Northern Ireland (Belfast and Larne) are easily accessible. Only 8 miles away, passengers can choose to sail with either Stenaline or P&O European Ferries. Here we are!! The A77 to the north provides access to Ayr and Glasgow and further on to all other areas of Scotland. The A75 heading east takes you to Dumfries with easy motorway links to England. Who are we? Dr Simon Reid MB, BcH, BaO, MRCGP, DRCOG ,LF Hom Simon loves watching and playing football. He is also the team doctor for our local football team – Stranraer Football Club. During his time off he loves to get out on the golf course and enjoys friendly competitions. Simon is a strong family man and enjoys spending as much time with his family and friends as possible. He is a keen fundraiser and has raised money for our local community centre. Dr Reid is an experienced Intermediate Specialist in Drug Rehabilitation. As the senior partner in the practice he keeps us all in check! Patient, kind and fun-loving he promotes a relaxed and friendly work environment. Dr Jenny Lee MB, BcH, DRCOG, Diploma in Counselling Jenny is an enthusiastic and experienced marathon runner having participated in the London, Paris, Belfast, Chester and Dublin Marathons. She has raised money for numerous charities and is an active member of Stranraer Baptist Church. Jenny is our GP lead for Mental Health Care and has a special interest in Well Woman issues. During her spare time she loves taking her Labradors on long walks in the country or along the beach and spending time with her family and friends. Jenny is highly motivated partner in the practice and keeps the team ticking along with her positive attitude. Dr Ian Young MBChB, MRCGP Ian is our youngest partner and his vibrant, witty personality shines through in all aspects of our working day. Whatever happens Ian will see the funny side – often at our expense! Ian also loves getting out on the golf course, where perhaps he may have a lower handicap if he was able to stop talking. But don’t be fooled - Ian is very astute and sees the bigger picture all the time. His problem solving skills are second to none, he has a generous heart and would always help anyone struggling. As an accredited GP Training Practice Ian is our lead trainer and is a member of the local GP sub and LHP committees. He is the practice lead for all IT and contract issues. During his time off Ian loves spending time with his family and taking his dogs to the beach or his caravan. We’re a sociable lot!!     64751 SNH SW Cvr_5mm:cover 14/1/09 10:00 Page 1 Southwest Scotland: A landscape fashioned by geology From south Ayrshire and the Firth of Clyde across Dumfries and Galloway to the Solway Firth and northeastwards into Lanarkshire, a variety of attractive landscapes reflects the contrasts in the underlying rocks. The area’s peaceful, rural tranquillity belies its geological roots, which reveal a 500-million-year history of volcanic eruptions, continents in collision, and immense changes in climate. Vestiges of a long-vanished ocean SOUTHWEST are preserved at Ballantrae and the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands are constructed from the piled-up sediment scraped from an ancient sea floor. Younger rocks show that the Solway shoreline was once tropical, whilst huge sand dunes of an arid desert now underlie Dumfries. Today’s landscape has been created by aeons of uplift, weathering and erosion. Most recently, over the last 2 million years, the scenery of Southwest Scotland was moulded by massive ice sheets which finally melted away about 11,500 years ago. SCOTLAND SOUTHWEST A LANDSCAPE FASHIONED BY GEOLOGY I have a close personal interest in the geology of Southwest Scotland as it gave me my name. It comes of course from the town of Moffat, which is only a contraction of Moor Foot, which nestles near the head of a green valley, surrounded by hills and high moorland. But thank God something so prosaic finds itself in the midst of so SCOTLAND: much geological drama. What this excellent book highlights is that Southwest Scotland is the consequence of an epic collision.
