Siempre leo su revista y he tenido la impresión de que las críticas de sus colaboradores son informadas y, dentro de lo que cabe, “objetivas”, pero nunca con afán de desprestigiar a los artistas. Yo me pregunto si el señor Mercado fue a ver todas las funciones, pues la manera como se expresó, especialmente de la soprano

    Notes 1 Introduction: Voice, Queer, Technologies 1. Operatic and other highly trained professional singers are often heard to talk about “the voice” as opposed to “my voice,” imply- ing that they perceive the voice as an instrument that is not exactly and entirely part of them. In listening, however, the overriding discourse is of the voice as emerging not only from the body but also the very being of the singer, something explored in further detail below. 2. See also Michel Chion on the acousmêtre and the acousmatic voice (1999). 3. One very clear example of the confusion to be found in “The Grain of the Voice” is Barthes’s asking his readers to allow the follow- ing three statements to coexist: the grain is “the body in the voice as it sings” (188); he hears the lungs in Fischer-Dieskau’s singing (183); and Fischer-Dieskau’s art is “borne by a voice lacking in any ‘grain’ ” (185). 4.     MARIA CALLAS PERFORMANCE ANNALS AND DISCOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION These annals began in 1988 as a few notes scribbled to a computer in Boulder Colorado when the first pirates of the live performances appeared on compact disc. The inconsistency of performance dates and other details on those early CDs prompted me to do further research that began with John Ardoin’s The Callas Legacy. Later, yearning to know what had been performed between all those recorded performances, I borrowed the book containing Arthur Germond’s performance annals from the University of Colorado Music School Library, and have continued to work on the project to this day. Performance annals allow us to comprehend the scope of an artist’s career, and knowing the programme of all participants in a recital is important. I realize that presenting entire programmes from the student years in Athens seems excessive, but I feel it enhances our understanding of the environment where Maria Callas lived and studied in her youth. This chronology is a compilation of the research of many people. The work of a few has been almost heroic in scope: Arthur Germond was the first to publish detailed annals representing all cast changes; John Ardoin was perhaps the first to compile annals and to comprehensively analyze the recorded performances, indeed these annals began their life as a tabular version of Legacy; Poly´vios Marsán was the first to present programme information from the Greek school days and early career in Athens; Níkos Petsális-Diomídis has published the most comprehensive analysis of any singer’s formative years ever undertaken, indeed one-thousand pages covering a seven year period 1938-1945 with emphasis on early musical experience and training, as well as the politics and the climate of the times.

    NI 7939/40 the theatre and on record readily admitted that it was tremendously impressive. He possessed an extremely dark, virile and weighty central register that was still malleable and able to move up with consummate ease through the passaggio to his remarkable upper extension. His attack on top notes and the ability to sustain them, coupled with a fine legato and informed phrasing, provided him with the ideal voice for the high dramatic baritone roles in Verdi operas. What is surprising is the way he manages to scale down his voice for the Sea Shanties, LEONARD WARREN Kipling songs and American ballads that featured in his concert programmes. It is here, without the constraints of operatic convention, that a listener most readily appreciates his communicative abilities.     NOSTALGIA Giulietta Simionato en México por José Octavio Sosa A Elliott Plutón Villegas. In memoriam asi centenaria, murió el pasado 5 de mayo en Roma, la mezzosoprano Citaliana Giulietta Simionato (Forli, 12 de mayo de 1910). A Giulietta Simionato se le conoció en México, en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, en la temporada de Ópera Nacional, A. C. de 1949 (que comandaba Antonio Caraza Campos) cuyo debut se efectuó el 28 de junio cantando Mignon de Ambroise Thomas, acompañada en el elenco por Giuseppe Di Stefano (que un año antes había hecho su debut en México), el notable bajo Cesare Siepi y Verdad Luz Guajardo, una soprano coloratura que tuvo efímera participación en la Ópera Nacional. La obra de Thomas fue cantada en italiano, como era costumbre, y concertada musicalmente por Guido Picco; la presentación de la Simionato causó sensación, destacando la belleza de su timbre y su presencia escénica. Giulietta Simionato En la misma temporada interpretó a Rosina en tres funciones de Il barbiere Regresó para inaugurar la temporada de 1950 a lado de Maria Callas, que debutaba di Siviglia, nuevamente acompañada por en nuestro país con Norma de Bellini, y en donde la Simionato encarnó a Adalgisa, Di Stefano como Almaviva, el Figaro de con Kurt Baum como Pollione y Nicola Moscona en el rol de Oroveso, bajo la batuta Enzo Mascherini, además de los bajos de Guido Picco. Sobra decir que el éxito que alcanzó esa dupla, mimsa que habría de Gerhard Pechner y Siepi, Bartolo y Basilio, compartir el escenario en diversos teatros del mundo en repetidas ocasiones, resultó respectivamente, bajo la dirección musical apoteósico.
