  • Our Faith in the School of Mary
IN MARY’S SCHOOL OF FAITH TODAY Introduction The Year of Faith opened by our meanwhile Pope emeritus Benedict XVI and continued by Pope Francis aims at the transmission of the faith in our secularized world. God’s providence foresaw a striking dynamic for this year commemorating the 50 th anniversary of Vatican Council II. From October to February we could attend lectures given by Benedict XVI. He taught us the content of faith and how to penetrate it with heart and mind. It appears that Pope Francis wants to send us to the areopaghi 1 of our times in order to become witnesses to the faith. A few days prior to the solemn opening of the Year of Faith the XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops was launched. Synods can be likened to a graduate seminar, a think tank for the realities of the universal church. Last October the participants deliberated on how “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith” can succeed in our time. At stake is not simply boosting Mass attendance or advocating regular prayer; although a sound spiritual life was, is and will always remain at the heart of being Christian. Yet, evangelization aims at engaging broad social and cultural challenges 2 through a distinctively Christlike lens. In other words, faith is authentic and attractive "when, through our actions, words and way of being, Another makes himself present.” 3 Ultimately, such a transformation is a gift of grace supported by an educational process. 4 With this paper we want to consider the Meaning of the Year of Faith from a Pedagogical Perspective.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Epidemiology of Hajj Pilgrimage Mortality: Analysis for Potential Intervention A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Public Health by Mahmoud Abdalgader M Gaddoury 2019 © Copyright by Mahmoud Abdalgader M Gaddoury 2019 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Epidemiology of Mortality of the Hajj Pilgrimage: Analysis for Potential Intervention by Mahmoud Abdalgader M Gaddoury Doctor of Public Health University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Haroutune K. Armenian, Chair Background The Hajj is the annual mass gathering of Muslims that occurs in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Vision 2030 predicts the attendance of 30 million pilgrims each year by 2030. Cost- effective healthcare services during the Hajj are important to manage this increase in the number of pilgrims. Communicable diseases have always been a concern during the Hajj. However, little is known about the impact of the preexisting chronic diseases on morbidity and mortality during the Hajj. Furthermore, the quality of services provided by Hajj hospitals warrants further study. Objectives A relatively large number of pilgrims admitted to Hajj hospitals die during their stay. This dissertation aims to describe patterns of inpatient, all-cause mortality during the Hajj and the relationship between mortality and preexisting chronic diseases as well as the services provided in Hajj hospitals. ii Study Design and Population The population included pilgrims who were admitted to Hajj hospitals in Makkah and sacred sites during five Hajj seasons between 2012 and 2017, excluding 2015. A retrospective, matched, case-control study design was utilized with a ratio of deaths to surviving controls of 1:2, resulting in 2,237 cases of mortality being matched to 4,474 control cases based on age and gender using a one-stage sampling approach.

CULTURAL CHANGE AND "CATHOLIC LAWYERS" Stephen F Smith' I. INTRODUCTION If there is anything that America definitely does not need, it would seem, it is more lawyers. According to one survey, close to seventy-five percent of those surveyed believe that the United States has too many lawyers.' In one sense, the public seems to have a point. Over the last thirty years or so, the number of lawyers practicing in the United States has almost tripled to current levels of roughly 900,000 practicing attorneys.2 To this number, our nation's law schools add another 35,000 attorneys annually.3 To put these figures in perspective, American lawyers represent about thirty-five percent of the total number of licensed attorneys in the world, although the popular press has occasionally reported estimates ranging as high as sixty-five or seventy percent.4 Regardless of what the actual percentage is, it is clear that the United States has far more attorneys on a per capita basis than any of the other industrialized nations of the world.5 Given these indications f Associate Professor, University of Virginia School of Law.

  • Towards a Theology of Suffering: the Contribution of Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II”
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA “Towards a Theology of Suffering: The Contribution of Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II” A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology and Religious Studies Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Sacred Theology Peter C. Harman Washington, D.C. 2010 “Towards a Theology of Suffering: The Contribution of Karol Wojtyla/Pope John Paul II” Reverend Peter C. Harman, S.T.D. Director: John S. Grabowski, Ph. D. Pope John Paul II’s 1984 Apostolic Letter Salvifici doloris shares a common anthropology with his “Theology of the Body” audiences delivered between 1979 and 1984. In them, drawing on his work in phenomenology as a professional philosopher, he discusses the revelatory potential of the human body. His method of inquiry into man’s self-understanding of his nature and the struggles he faces invites academic investigation of both issues of human sexuality and human suffering. Analogous to his description of man’s coming to understand a language of the body between spouses, there is also the potential for a communion of persons to be released in the experience of the mystery of human suffering by both the suffering person and the one who cares for him. This dissertation investigates the themes addressed in Wojtyla/John Paul’s teaching, particularly in the “Theology of the Body” with the purpose of synthesizing an anthropology found there in order to present an expanded theology of suffering as a much needed tool for a culture that often views the experience of suffering as only a negative one, something to be eliminated at all costs.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Solving the Problem of Evil STEPHEN GALDO Spring 2014 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree in Management Information Systems with honors in English Reviewed and approved* by the following: Joshua Shaw Associate Professor of Philosophy Thesis Adviser Craig Warren Associate Professor of English and Professional Writing Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT Nothing has posed a greater challenge to Christianity than the problem of evil. How could an omnipotent, omniscient, and all good God permit evil? Why is there so much evil? Why is there pointless evil? God where are you? God are you real? These are questions I address in this thesis. In the first section, I address what I believe to be the most compelling challenges to faith in God: the logical, natural, and gratuitous problems of evil. I offer compelling arguments against the non-believer’s challenges: the existence of free will, greater goods result, and God’s attempt to use suffering to draw us into a personal relationship with him. In the second section, I share my personal experience with evil and suffering. I take a closer look at how God used suffering to lead me to an intimate relationship with him in my high school and college years. In the third and final section, I illustrate the power of having faith when encountering evil. I talk more about my personal approach to suffering and how I find meaning within it.
