In statistics, intra-class correlation, or intra-class correlation ratio (ICC), representing 1, is a narrative statistic that can be used to quantify units organized into groups. It describes how much units in the same group are similar to each other. Although it is seen as a type of correlation, unlike most other correlation indicators it works on data structured as a group rather than data structured as a paired observation. Intraclass correlation is usually used to quantify the extent to which people with a fixed degree of kinship (e.g. full siblings) are similar in terms of quantitative traits (see hired). Another notable application is the assessment of the consistency or reproducibility of quantitative measurements taken by different observers, measuring the same number. The ICC's early definition: the unbiased but complex formula For the earliest work on intra-class correlations, focused on the case of pair measurements, and the first intra-class correlation (ICC) statistics to be proposed were changes in interclass correlation (pearson correlation). The variability of inter-observers refers to systematic differences between observers - for example, one doctor can consistently evaluate patients at a higher level of risk than other doctors. Variability within the observer refers to the deviations of the assessment of a particular observer from a particular patient, which are not part of the systematic difference. The ICC is built to apply to exchange measurements, i.e. grouped data, in which there is no meaningful way to streamline measurements within the group. In assessing the correspondence between observers, if the same expert evaluates each element studied, there are probably systematic differences between observers, which is contrary to the notion of exchange. If the ICC is used in a situation where there are systematic differences, the result is an integral measure of variability within the observer and observer. One of the situations where one might reasonably assume that the exchange may be when the sample that will be scored is, say, a blood sample, divided into several aliquots, and aliquots are measured separately on the same tool. In this case, the exchange of views will take place until there is any effect due to the sequence of the time of the samples. Since the intra-class correlation rate is an integral part of intra-bledence and inter-inner-point variability, its results are sometimes considered difficult to interpret when observers cannot be exchanged.
