In statistics, intra-class correlation, or intra-class correlation ratio (ICC), representing 1, is a narrative statistic that can be used to quantify units organized into groups. It describes how much units in the same group are similar to each other. Although it is seen as a type of correlation, unlike most other correlation indicators it works on data structured as a group rather than data structured as a paired observation. Intraclass correlation is usually used to quantify the extent to which people with a fixed degree of kinship (e.g. full siblings) are similar in terms of quantitative traits (see hired). Another notable application is the assessment of the consistency or reproducibility of quantitative measurements taken by different observers, measuring the same number. The ICC's early definition: the unbiased but complex formula For the earliest work on intra-class correlations, focused on the case of pair measurements, and the first intra-class correlation (ICC) statistics to be proposed were changes in interclass correlation (pearson correlation). This is because Fisher has developed a formula to be impartial, and so his grades are sometimes overestimated and sometimes underestimated. For small or 0 base values in the population, the ICC calculated from the sample may be negative. Modern definitions of ICC: a simpler formula, but a more positive bias starting with Ronald Fischer, intra-class correlation was considered as part of the Variance Analysis (ANOVA), and more recently within the models of random effects. A number of ICC appraisers were proposed. One of the key differences between the two statistics is that in the ICC data are centered and scaled using a combination of medium and standard deviation, while in Pearson's correlation each variable is centered and scaled by its average and standard deviation. This scaling combination makes sense for the ICC because all measurements have the same number (albeit on units in different groups). For example, in a paired dataset, where each pair is a single measurement for each of the two units (for example, weighing each twin in a pair of identical twins) rather than two different measurements for one unit (e.g., measuring height and weight for each person), THE ICC is a more natural indicator of association than Pearson's correlation. An important feature of Pearson's correlation is that it is not entitled to apply individual linear transformations to the two variables that are compared. This property makes no sense for the ICC, as there is no to decide which transformation applies to each value in the group. However, if all data in all groups are subjected to the same linear transformation, the ICC does not change. In assessing the match between observers, the ICC is used to assess the consistency or conformity of measurements taken by several observers measuring the same number. For example, if several doctors ask for CT scans to show signs of cancer progression, we may ask how consistent the scores are to each other.
